Sciatic Nerve!!!

I write this a few days before Xmas and 5 weeks before I am due to go to Soll. Not sure what I did but on Sunday had a pain in my left thigh, and on monday the pain from the outside of my thigh to my groin was like someone had it in a torneque (not spelt right)! Absolute agony, and can hardly use my left leg at all, reliant on walking stick and strong pain killers from my doctor. She thinks its a trapped nerve somewhere a possibly the sciatic nerve. I would have expected the pain to be down the back of my buttock and the back of my leg. Been recommended to see a pysio after Xmas. Has anyone got words of comfort that this will pass, as being a relatively fit 50 year old this is the first time I suffered such an injury. Streuth it hurts sitting down typing this, best I hit another tablet!! :(

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

A few years ago I was laid out with a sciatic problem for about 5 days. As you say, couldn't walk, in absolute agony.
However, it was straight down the back side, nothing in the side region.
If it is sciatic, it can go quite quickly.
fingers crossed

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

SF, Wow, I sympathise, but this is about what to do. After my OH broke her leg just over a year ago, she had physio right up until when we went skiing, (after the plaster cast came off!) She skiied really well, albeit quite gently.

However, after the season end, she was hit with the sciatica. This went on for months, but eventually it went. She did have some remedial massage and extra physio, and her feeling was that this did help quite a bit.

Have you changed anything recently, footwise, new shoes or trainers. Have you started a newsport/fitness activity? Gone biking? Been injured?

I would suggest this, don't wait until after Christmas, you will lose a couple of weeks. Find a physio/masseur now. Suggest that you look at sports clubs, say your local rugby club. Talk to a sports doctor.

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

I have to agree with Dave Mac. I wouldn't wait. I'd go and find someone (physio/chiropracter/osteopath etc.) as soon as possible, especially as you want to be ski-ing soon.

Ally

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

SF, agree with all the above suggestions. Go right away, before it gets any worse. I suggest an Osteopath, ask your neighbours/colleagues/friends who they trust. The Sciatic nerve is a big one, and yes, it does run down the backside. It can be as big as a little finger. There are other nerves running through the lower spine and the pelvis which can produce the sort of pain you are experiencing. My uneducated and unqualified guess is that there is a tiny impingement on one of the lumbar vertebrae. You need expert help, not guesswork by your GP.

Good Luck and keep us posted :D

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

If the mainstream treatments aren't helping, the alternative ones can sometimes work.

A few years ago my husband had a really bad back - problems with the sacro-iliac joint - and he could hardly walk for months. He was going to the GP but all he got from him was anti-inflammatories, pain killers and sick notes. He tried a physio as well, but no good.

Eventually he had a really bad day and he was lying on the floor in total agony virtually unable to move (he had to crawl on hands and knees to the toilet) and the GP came round and couldn't do anything, and a friend of ours who is a reflexologist said he'd come and have a look at him. All our friend did was twiddle my husband's feet, and the pain went instantly and he went to sleep on the floor (after being awake all night in spite of taking massive amounts of pain killers). And when he woke up he just got up - problem gone :D :D

I know it sounds an unlikely tale  , but it is totally true. I wish I'd videod it. And I'm not recommending reflexology for everyone for everything, but in this case it produced a startling cure.

Ally

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

100% get it sorted now, and dont waste time with the NHS. Go see an Osteopath and/or sports therapist asap. If it is sciatic it may be serious and lead to back problems and operations, but thats worse case scenario. What you might get in the short term is a fix and relief. I hope so!
Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

I am no GP or Physio but have suffered goodness knows how many injuries playing football over the years and I used to get similar pain but this was from an abducter muscle in the groin area.

Sciatica usually starts from the small of the back through the buttocks and right down the back of one or even both legs if unfortunate, a bit like have a very tight hamstring muscle.

Have used an osteopath in the past for ailments, although very gentle manipulation did the trick every time.

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to send me your comments. At the moments its so bad I can hardly even leave the house, and as such Mrs SF's Xmas presents have not been bought!! I will definately be asking around locally to see if there is some expert with a sporting background who maybe able to help. Any of you folk by chance from the Ruislip, Middx area know of anyone?
Like I have said I am relatively fit for my age, but not an 'Ironman'. Since I packed in competitive team sport I have turned my hand to badminton over the last year and although I did have a few problems with my left 'achilles', I cured this by simply wearing appropriate footwear.

With skiing in mind it has been pointed out to me that I do have a lack of flexability in my ankles which causes me problems in both technique and boot comfort and I have been doing simple stretching excersises to help this. Connected! I know not.

I am hoping that when I was up my loft moving stuff around on sunday to get at my Xmas decorations that due to the lack of foot room up there I may have moved something that was awkward as opposed to being heavy, and as such did not have my feet poistioned appropriately and although I did not feel it at the time maybe stretched something!!

Totally selfish I know but more worried about how this may effect my skiing than how I will cope over Xmas!! Talking of which may I take this opportunity to wish you all where over you may be on the globe a Merry Xmas and fantastic injury free and safe skiing 2010.

Scarlet Fez, a colleague of mine has had the same problem and it was diagnosed as a prolapsed disc in his lower spine which was linked to the Sciatic Nerve.
However, depending on age, determines whether you need to have an operation or not.
My colleague does and it is an 8 week recovery period.

Hope you get well soon.

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

If you are skiing in 5 weeks you really need to be seen ASAP, by anyone with Physio qualifications and not a GP.

Dependant on what the injury is, which to me seems more groin area than sciatic problem (But what do I know) that can take 3 to 4 weeks dependent on what you have done and you will need excercise to strengthen ASAP.

A few days rest will probably sort it out anyway, but just doesn't feel like that right now, but it would be useful to know what it is to exercise that area properly to prevent it happening while you are away too.

There is a good Physio site www.physioroom.com that you can see if anything matches what you have, though the danger is you will have everything on there and the rehabilitaion times are always about 6 weeks!!

Hope you find out soon and get sorted.

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

You must try and find someone immediately, as it may take a few to find the right person.

I had two nerves trapped in a disc, including the sciatic, and was in agony (carrying heavy crockery in high heels as you ask!)I went to an oesteopath who didn't want to touch me in case she did more damage, my doc sent me to NHS physio everyday for a week where they gave me a few exercise to no effect, until I finally discovered a chiropractor who was sports injury oriented.

There are various forms of chiro out there, but Aidan had a treatment bed with a lever between your legs (oooh, matron)and once he identified which discs it was trapped between he gently levered them apart. Don't be scared by this, he did the sessions for a very small amount of time and it wasn't painful at all. It took about 4 weeks to become fully mobile but it was about 18 months ago and I haven't had a problem since.

Hi.
From what you describe I have suffered from the same injury at the beginning of this year. I had a shooting pain going dowm my left thigh and across the top of my foot which when was not really painful I felt like I had constant pins and needles in my leg.
If this is similar to you try changing your trainers as it could be the gait of your foot not gelling with your footwear as it was in my case or so it seemed to be as within a week of changeing my footwear my problem cleared up after months of agony. Hope this is of some use to you
Jay

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

I screwed up my sciatic nerve whilst skiing in February this year. Started by losing the feeling in my big toe and then the underside of my left foot. Got myself checked out when I came home by a back surgeon, as 10 years ago I lost 2 discs and gained some titanium bars and screws.
Turned out to be a "streched" sciatic nerve, caused by a lesson from the ski school (my fault for not admitting my back surgery)
The good news is nerves can repair themselves,
the bad news is it takes time.

Everyone is different .. from how it affects you to how quickly you get over it.
I would just take it easy until you go.

G

Re:Sciatic Nerve!!!

SF, I have had the same problem on a few occasions due to a condition I have and I can relate to the pain you are experiencing. I can also tell you that once a physio therapist has diagnosed what is causing the sciatic pain they will be able to show you exercises to free up the nerve and strengthen your spine. Once you start the exercises it will improve quickly so the sooner you see a physio the better...Don't write off your skiing holiday yet! Complete rest is not good for sciatic problems so try to keep mobile. )

Injury update!
Although due to the Xmas period I have not yet the opportunity to let someone in the know examine this mature frame and give me wise advise, the rest food and drink of xmas have done it some good. The nerve seems now not to be trapped and the ache is dull and feels like a cross between dead leg and a groin strain. Will still be seeing someone about it, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is looking optimistic for Soll on the 23rd of January! )
