I opened a parcel for my son (new skis)...started dreaming about our ski holiday. Then I looked out of the window and it was snowing... Yay ! :D Happy days.

I was doing some christmas shopping while it was snowing. how festive, just like in the movies :lol:
We've got a nice layer on the roofs and verges. My driveway seems to catch a lot too for some reason :thumbup:

No snow here in West Wales, but at least it's finally stopped raining - hooray! We were thinking about building an ark. Our forecast is dry for the next 5 days, apart from a bit of rain this evening.

I hope everyone going away on their ski holiday doesn't get held up by too much snow here. That would really be ironic, after all these weeks when everyone's been worried sick that there wouldn't be enough snow in the Alps or wherever they're going.

I wouldn't worry Snowbandit, Tony hasn't been doing proper exercises - only walking to the pub and running up and down escalators in London carrying briefcases, whereas you of course have been using that step machine and doing crunchies ... :D

I usually ski mid week at Glencoe + get a student price so doesn't represent great value (or at least wouldn't have last season at that price, especially as I was skiing for free at Glenshee). Will look in to it, cheers!

You are right, GBP115 is GBP23 a day, whereas, as students, you and I get for GBP22. That's the Cairngorm price anyway.

My Mrs popped out for half an hour this morning. There was 3 inches on the ground when she went. I cleared the drive and by the time she came back you couldnt tell where I had cleared.
We have had about 6 inches here in South Lincs now, the minor roads are totally impassable, and yet somehow I have to get down to Watford to stopover tonight in order to be at Heathrow at 7am tomorrow to collect my son from America....assuming his flight actually makes it in!!!

Well, I hoiked my skis up on my back and trudged to the closest thing Cambridge has to a hill, and did 4 or 5 runs before getting bored. I've done it though, and that's all I wanted. Getting my bindings adjusted was super easy, it turns out!

I was in Cambridge (Girton College) at the weekend, and I didn't see any hills anywhere. Where did you manage to find one? I hope the effort was worth it :D

When I lived in London we used to go sledging on Hampstead Heath, which was only a couple of miles away. That is a good hill!

Girton college is ON a hill! Not much of one, mind. It's certainly pretty noticable heading down Castle Hill in to the centre, though.

What I did today wasn't really skiing, to be honest, but it was worth it. Certainly fun.

THAT was a hill? Good heavens, you should come and see some of ours :D We've got one, in our local village, that's got a gradient of 1:5 and you can only get up it in first gear in a car. I was extremely proud the first day I managed to bike all the way up it :D And you should just see what happens during the summer, when the poor holidaymakers have to do a hill start on it :lol:

Anyway, I'm glad you had fun. That's what Christmas is all about.

We still haven't got any snow at all. But it's just as well, because when we do get snow it blows off the fields into the roads and it's 20 foot deep in the road, because of our high hedges.

Couldn't get up the wolds in the car today after a good snowfall, and im too lazy to walk up so i took;

1 x car travelling at 30 mph

1 x towrope

1 x dvr

1 x set of ski's

i put them all in a mixing bowl and it made

It took me 7 hours to 79 miles yesterday. Not as bad as some areas but still a complete joke.

I have to agree with that.

The general standard of driving when we get a bit of snow is appalling. Add that to the complete lack of winter preperation most people and councils seem to make, and we have instant disaster :cry:

It took me over three hours to travel the almost three miles home from work yesterday :shock: I must have passed at least six accidents and seen numerous stranded 4x4's, and all the while people were hooting me for leaving a 20 foot gap between myself and the car in front when stationary. That soon stopped when the car behind me suddenly started sliding forward after being stopped for over 5 minutes. The driver was quite shocked that something like that could happen, but also rather thankfull that I had enough room to get out of his way.

Funny how he started leaving bigger gaps after that :twisted:

There are a number of factors why this nation of ours is rubbish when it gets cold:

1. Forecasting is never ever accurate enough
2. Preparation of roads by local authorities is not proavtive enough and once it has snowed they dont come out again and try to clear anything.
3. No one uses winter tyres
4. Not enough people know how to drive sensibly, see FQ's story above.
5. People either think they are invincible in 4x4's hammering along in thick snow and ice, or drive at 15mph on clear roads. Both types of people should be fined for bad driving.
6. There are not enough traffic police out when conditions are bad to patrol and control.
7. I would hazard a guess that what we use to make our road surfaces is cheap and does not contain anything that helps matters in times of low temperatures. Our roads simply seem to freeze although a lack of gritting is mainly responsible.
8. The councils need to stop lying to us and telling us they have done their best.
9. Why do people still insist on going out when they dont NEED to when conditions are bad?
10. Employers need to be more sensible and either allow employees to work from home when its bad, or let people go home early. Its heavy traffic that makes the roads worse - queuing on icy roads = bumps and accidents, and worsening of conditions.

I live in Basingstoke which seems to be the epi-centre of the news today after our mammoth snowfall last night (all 6 inches of it). Here's a picture of the field outside my house this afternoon, not quite enough of a slope to get the skis out unfortunately...

It's been raining here, last night and early this morning, and now it's frozen, and we have black ice everywhere. The concrete outside our door has turned into a skating rink, and I could hardly walk up our road, never mind drive up it. I think black (or transparent really) ice is incredibly dangerous, much worse than snow, because at least with snow you can see it.

I am hoping it will thaw out later because I still have some shopping to do.

How's everyone else getting on with the snow in other places?

I was walking very carefully outside on our concrete 'skating rink' and I fell crash - flat on my back. I don't think I've ever seen it this bad before. I nearly failed to get back in our door - my husband was going to look for a piece of rope to tow me back in :lol: And I've got to get 3 houses ready for Christmas and the New Year - ours plus the two holiday cottages.

Luckily I don't seem to have broken anything :D

My road is still totally white and fairly smooth but its icy underneath. The pavements into the village are horrible and icy, very dangerous, but the main roads are clear now.
Its still pretty with snow hanging from the trees and bushes, especially with the sun out. It has not risen above freezing yet though, which is why I guess the snow has not gone anywhere.
No more snow looking likely before Xmas now.

We have the same problem were I live.
A notice from the Management company read: -

The local council are unable to grit the roads and pavements due to it being private land.
The management company will not grit the roads or pavements as we will be liable for any accidents.

I thought thats what insurance was for?

I thought the grit was to stop the accidents?

Yes it is but removing ice from pavements and gritting does not 100% clear the problem and can sometimes make it worse.

I live in Wellingborough, Northants and the Council has made no effort whatsoever to grit/clear the side-roads or their pavements, which are now like skating rinks!

It's so beautiful here and I really want it to stay that way for my sister's wedding tomorrow. The hotel is in stunning grounds with massive cedar trees, I can't wait to turn into the grounds in the car.
Fingers crossed the rain forecast for tomorrow doesn't come.
I'm slightly concerned about the country roads I'm just about to drive round to go and pick her up I've gotta say :shock:

22nd December - The tow has been running today and it is our intention to open on Wednesday from around 10.30 a.m. There has been fresh snow but cover is variable with good depth in some places but thin in others. However, owing to the frozen base beneath, even the thin areas are quite skiable, giving reasonable conditions overall.

From the Lake District Ski Club (Raise) site:

Great news. The tow did operate on Tuesday 22nd
It will run tomorrow Wednesday 23rd.

In the meantime, here in Glos the rain turned to sleet then to snow causing more traffic chaos on the Cotswolds. The hill at the back of my house is looking more inviting for a few turns!

it rained last night for an hour, but it has not shifted the snow and only served to put a sheet of ice across the snow on the back roads.
Main roads are clear here, but slightly further north in the county there were 40 accidents last night and 1 death sadly.
Forecast is for another foot of snow overnight. My BIL is in Birmingham and coming over, said its throwing it down with snow in the west mids.

It's mid afternoon Xmas eve...

I'm about 15 miles east of Stansted.

The snow is nearly all gone and not much ice left on the roads / paths.

There is no worries about flights from Stansted (unless things change).

I'm off to Flaine via Geneva in 3 weeks - only 8 working days left!!!!!!
