Will I Get Bored in Niederau?

I'm going to grab a last minute deal to Austria in Jan with my lovely wife, her mum and mum's boyfriend. Everyone loves Skiwelt because we can ski from 8am-4pm without stopping or getting a bus and without skiing the same slope twice.

Looking through the deals thought I've seen some cracking offers in Nierderau. Having never been there I'm wondering if we will get a bit bored given that the Wildschonau is not interconnected and you have to get busses between the villages.

Any thoughts? If there is already a topic about this please let me know.

Thanks!

Steve

Re:Will I Get Bored in Niederau?

Missing the point here about "boredom"?
Niederau is pat of the Wildschonau ski area which is small and for a weeks holiday for intermediate skiers, it may be restrictive.
It has its fans for various reasons, but someone who likes charging around the Skiwelt would most probably find this a very limited area IMO.
If the original poster is looking for a last minute Austrian deal, I would wait to see where the best snow is and then consider somewhere on the Skiwelt, Skicircus, Zillertall Valley, or Arlberg as I get the impression these are mileage hungry skiers.
Schladming, Bad Gastein, Mayrhofen, or St Anton/Lech for example may offer the larger kind of area these people might be looking for.
But I might be barking up the wrong tree.

Re:Will I Get Bored in Niederau?

Thanks Tony_H I will check out those other areas. I'll also try and hold my nerve for a while longer. Last year I got 7 days, half board in Scheffau, 2nd week in Jan with flights from Cardiff for just GBP250 per person! I'm not expecting that kind of luck again but something near that would be awesome.

Thanks folks. Top advice once again!

Steve

Re:Will I Get Bored in Niederau?

Oh, you don't want to go to Niederau. Wickers is right it's an absolute nightmare. It's always sheet ice, the lift queues stretch all the way back up to the top of the gondola. The views of the Kitzbuhleralps are hidden by advertising hoardings.

You just ask some of the people that have spent oh, two days there. They had chances to explore all the off piste runs, meet some of the locals, visit the historic alpine stubles. They will reveal the truth.

You want to stay away from Niederau, mate. For one thing, there are all these old farts, whizzing past you, obviously out of control, they just don't care.

And the beer and coffee is so cheap, it just cannot be any good.

And whatever you do, don't mention the red ski school, just don't get me started.

I wouldn't care if everyone else stopped going to Niederau.

We have used Niederau as a base for years now, we take full advantage of the Kitzbuler Alpen Topskipass. The lift pass allows you to ski in Waiding, St Jakob, Fieberbrum, Kirchdorf, St Johann, Kitzbuhel region, all of the Skiwelt, Wildschonau(Niederau), Alpbachtal region which in total has 704km of trails of which 500km are coverred by snow cannons & 245 lifts. You need a car to take advantage of the above as it is not interlinked which brings me to my point, a lot a ski resorts in Austria are small & offer only on average 40km of skiing. I think it is for this reason why the Kitzbuler Alpen lift pass exists, I think it is excellent value 270 euro for 10 day lift pass. Selecting the right resort is never easy but if you do the independant traveller route you do have a lot more options.

Finn

For comparison, a 7 day Three Valley pass in France, covering 600 Km of linked pistes, costs 267 euros this season, and you can base yourself in any of the 3 Valley resorts to access the whole area on skis.

It's just a pity you can't use the Austrian area one without a car, because otherwise it sounds quite good value.

Ally

Ally, that really is good value especially when you consider that the Three Valleys area is fully interlinked. Have not skied the Three Valleys yet, a possibility for next years trip! Nowt like a bit of forward planning.

The Kitzbuheler Alpen region is slowly but surely being interlinked, connections between Kitzbuhel & the Skiwelt via Westendorf now exist but you have to give serious consideration to your route planning & leave plenty of time to get back. Improvements & investment is ongoing & I believe that plans to link the Wildschonau valley with Alpbachtal have been mooted. A car is still the best option though.

Finn
