Now then you lot

We're off for a week in January, and as I missed out last season (we were going to go to BC for a couple of weeks, but husband made me go to Vegas and marry him instead, damn him) I quite fancy trying to get a late season week somewhere else - I'm thinking late March or April, after the school holidays.

We can fly easily to Geneva, Innsbruck and Grenoble.

We have an experienced boarder and a wimpy skier (me) - I'm a nice wide red run cruiser!

Ideally not France, I fancy somewhere different this time, and we're going to France in January

Probably needs to be high

Preferably no more than 60-90 mins transfer

Some nice bars and restaurants, I'm too old for wild nightlife....

Any suggestions would be very welcome to get me started. I need to start planning now so I have something to look forward to the minute I step off the plane home in January!

Re:Now then you lot

Zermatt... although when I was there a lot of the area wasn't open (no demand, not too little snow) what was open fits the bill, plenty of long wide cruisy reds especially over in to Cervinia.

Edit: transfer durations might not suit you but there is plenty to look at on the way...

Re:Now then you lot

(apologies to regulars who've heard me say this a million times...)

Obergurgl/Hochgurgl ticks every box there.

90 mins from Innsbruck
Lovely hotels with bars and restaurants (and a club or two if you get the urge!)
Highest resort in Austria, open late into the season
all cruisy blues and reds

I'd highly recommend it.

The only negative is that it's not a mega resort so wouldn't suit you if you like to ski a different run each time.

Re:Now then you lot

For the time of year I defo think you want to be looking high up in order to be safe.
I had a brilliant week in Verbier late March/early April in 2008 and got it at a ridiculously good price by booking 4 days before. Many resorts will not sell out that week in the season, as long as its not Easter peak week.
Verbs is 2.5 hr transfer, but its easy on motorway apart from the last 15 mins up to resort from the valley. If you book late, Skiworld do some great catered chalet offers.

Alternatively Obergurgl is a very good shout, although its always expensive to go there, even last minute and the apres is very limited and hotel based. Very plush hotels mainly though.

Solden is also worth a look, but not many tour op packages.

I'd also suggest Ischgl - perfect runs for both of you up there and its high up too. Great nightlife I understand - high on my list of places to ski.

And why not consider St Anton/Lech - only 90 mins max from Innsbruck and again some brilliant skiing to be had over there, and high up too. Some of their best powder days came in March/April last season there.

That should give you a few options to consider. Having been to Verbier and St Anton, I can recommend both. Solden and Ischgl are both on my wish list, and I know the lady who manages the local ski shop ALWAYS goes to Obergurgl every April and loves it.

Good luck, and enjoy.

Off to Les Houches on 2nd January. Once my exams are over tomorrow I'm going to indulge myself by thinking of absolutely NOTHING ELSE until then. Husband may not like this
