Re:What would you do if you saw this sign?

Tony,
I wouldn't do any of those things. I'd ask someone about it (using my fantastic new French skills if necessary!). And if there wasn't anyone to ask, I'd just ski down it. It says 'good' skiers, not fantastic, or expert skiers.

There was one of those signs on the T-bar lift at Tignes, and I didn't even notice it for a bit. We just went straight up. I mean, how bad could a T-bar be?

Ally

Re:What would you do if you saw this sign?

well according to some of the "ratings" that have been discussed on other thread then "good skiers" would be about the standard of a red so 1. would be the option taken.

Its when it says expert skiers only then you have to consider tightening the boots up......

Re:What would you do if you saw this sign?

I have had another think about this.

On a French website about Les Menuires, they say that 'bons skieurs' should get the entire 3 valleys lift pass, and the other 2 classes of skiers they describe are 'moyen' (medium or intermediate perhaps) who should get the combined Les Menuires and Val Thorens pass (same valley), and 'debutants' who should only get the Les Menuires pass or the special beginners pass which only allows them on blue and green pistes.

Anyway, I'd still go down it. I don't think it could be any worse than that ice at Tignes in October. And I have skied the whole 3 valleys in a day, so I would think I'd count now as a 'bon skieur'.

Ally

Re:What would you do if you saw this sign?

Ian,
I would think it was pisted. They have another sign for off piste, which I think is 'hors piste' in French.

As I said somewhere at the beginning of this, there was one of these signs at Tignes on the T-bar, and we went up it anyway. I never did find out if the sign referred to the lift or the red piste down. Anyway, we were fine. Presumably they'd put the sign up because of the ice, which did make conditions very difficult.

I imagine they put that sign up when conditions temporarily become more difficult (because of ice for example) than the grade of piste would lead one to believe. Otherwise, the piste would just be graded black and they'd only get 'good skiers' or kamikaze-like beginners.

Ally

Re:What would you do if you saw this sign?

Well, the first couple of times I took the gondola down, but then I did 1, 4, tried to do 2, did 4 again, and continued to do 1, got to the bottom and took the gondola back up and did it again, and then did 6.

Ally - the signs do not refer to the lifts. You dont need to be a good skier to use a lift.....
They refer to the piste that you find at the top of them.

The sign in the pic is not at the bottom of a lift, its at the top of a really steep gulley into a long mogul field in a massive valley. Getting to the lip of the gulley was as scary as looking down over the edg first time round!!!!

Re:What would you do if you saw this sign?

Tony,
You didn't see that T-bar lift at Tignes. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the sign did refer to the lift (or at least the path one travelled on).

It was very steep and icy, and what was even worse, it had huge holes in it, and when you looked down one of the holes it was like looking down a well - totally endless - presumably crevasses in the glacier  .

I am pretty tough, but it did make me feel fairly sick looking down these holes, and when I had a more careful look from a distance, I could see that the glacier seemed to be slipping to the side of this T-bar lift and I remembered that the lift the other side was out of action because the pylons had literally fallen over.

Was that mogul field the one in those other photos you had? It did look fairly horrible. Well done for getting down it. I guess I'd have had to sit down on most of it.

Ally

Re:What would you do if you saw this sign?

It's more a case of how many times can we do 1 before the lifts close! :D

I've seen a couple of these signs and plenty of people on the other side of them who shouldn't be.

One was in Tignes, the sign is at the bottom of the Col Des Ves lift which takes you to an area called Le Spot which is all unpisted. There's an avalanche equipment training area there. Great area to test your skills, really interesting terrain. We saw this guy at the top, he was in a GT snowplough struggling down the first little bit, he kept stopping and looking down then skiing a little bit more. Didn't like to tell him he was on by far the easiest bit of the run.

Thanks Andyhull - bang goes my theory then, that they are temporary signs for pistes which temporarily happen to be harder than they're graded for. That particular sign sounds as though it should really have said 'expert skiers only'.

Ally
