English Skiing - Lake District 2009/2010

We've no section for English skiing on J2ski. This is a skiing video from last week, filmed in The Lake District. Great soundtrack, and really enjoyable to watch :D

I've watched it 3 times now. It makes me happy :D Bloomin fit skier too, he carried a Paraglider and a Kite up with him 8)

It's surprising how little snow is needed to actually ski on, if it's a grassy base!

Wonder how his grass landing went?

It's hard enough carrying just skis up, used to walk up Cross Fell, to ski down. There is Hellvellyn ski club website.

You can tell he's going quite fast from looking at the dogs. We have a collie as well, and he can run at 30 miles an hour when he's going flat out (racing our car!).

I would think it would be perfectly possible to ski on wet grass without any snow at all. Anyone fancy trying my theory out?

Video of the 30th good, seems to ski/fly right along the Raise. Kite traffic jam further on though! Really good, they are still up there at sunset, and skiing by moonlight.

He really can run that fast. Our old, sadly departed collie, used to be able to run at that speed as well. If you've ever had anything to do with collie dogs you know that one of the biggest problems with them is to stop them chasing things, particularly cars. Of course, it's very handy when they're chasing the right things, like cattle and sheep that are refusing to come out of the field.

I trained our dog out of chasing cars when we first had him, because it's so dangerous for the dog and the occupants of the car, but the other day I was driving home down our road, and he was sitting at the side of the road waiting for my husband who was helping on a neighbours farm. Anyway, he spotted it was our car and decided to race home. I kept an eye on him and the speedo, and he was definitely doing 30 mph.

That's my back yard on the telly, really great to see the Cumbrian fells getting an outing on the J2ski site. On average I can get out at least three times a week to go fell running with our Border Collie, last two times out have been running through snow at about 600M & it is holding up pretty well. If conditions really improve & we get another season like last year there could be some good skiing to be had. :D
Must find out who the soundtrack was by, wouldnt mind adding that to the MP3 playlist.

Finn, I did the fell race at the Grassmere games. It was in the days of amateur amd professional, and since I wished to protect my amateur status, I entered as "Dave Smith". Turned out to be a few Dave Smiths, and a lot of John Smiths, a number of whom that I knew from our cross country league!

Dare say you would have ran up onto Fairfield then Dave, great mountain in winter to gar for a good wander.

Also did the Karrimor one year, 50 miles fell running, over two days, partnering a guy who had previously won 3000m Gold in the European Championships. Needless to say, he carried most of the gear, did all of the map-reading, and all of the cooking.

We managed a few places behind the winners, Chris Brasher and Bill Dainty. Which was all fine and dandy, until a few years ago, someone pointed out that my name appeared in "A History of Fell Running"!

My K2s almost appear in the Carver Ski History. Bode Miller skied on the model before mine, when he won the US Junior.

Last year the Karrimor was back in Lakeland but got called off half way through the event because of worsening weather conditions. None of the athlete's I spoke to wanted to come off the mountain, they all wanted to finish the event. Another sign of our health & safety gone mad.

Yes, I remember that. The first year I did the Four Inns 50 miler, three guys died of hypothermia, and were found under ice after three days. That race was called off for most people but I had finished by that time.

Interesting little film about the Lake District Ski Club at Raise. I had no idea that they can offer 1000ft of lift served vertical in good conditions.

Skiing on the Helvelyn range looks great, hoping to try out telemark skiing & improve off piste on holiday this year which would help tremendously for days out on Helvelyn massiff. Will definitely enquire about membership now that I have seen the video.

We went out to look at banjos, never saw any (Actually, never looked would be accurate) ~ managed to buy a pair of skis for the OH, though. "Oh, and I need a pair of sticks to match the colour of the skis. Of course we'll need a bag to put them in. And, Dave, don't those gloves look nice?"

Buying new ski kit is a wonderful feeling :D

Rossignol Harmony 2. They had the same ski from last year, different top farbe, but no, that won't do will it? Have to have this years.

Well, to be fair, I agreed. The binding combination was neat. You could clip the toe and heel binding onto the rail, turn a locking cam, et voila!

I could see the possibility of carrying the bindings in my rucsac, and errm, spooning her Rossys inside my Volkls, inside the ski bag, saving transfer costs. Mmmmmm, cosy, innit.

Sounds good, if you had a few pairs of skis with the Vist Speedlock system Dave you could have various pairs of skis with one set of bindings, swapping them over only takes a couple of minutes ;)

Yes, from an engineering viewpoint, I though this was the bees knees. OTOH, if your ski usage averages one pair every twenty years.......

And, how easy is it to nick a pair of bindings from your skis, either on the mountain, or in the ski cellar?

But, I'm just getting into my stride now. Two new pairs in one year. Wow. It's a Mac record.

Oh, and the lack of humour on my part, is because I was on my laptop, where I can only see 3/4 smilies, (and the laptop can only recognise the same). I'm now on the main PC. ) :) :D :( :mrgreen: :shock: :?: 8) :lol: :x :P :oops: :evil: :twisted: :roll: :!:

Nope, my IE was failing, so my son fixed me up with Firefox. It works well, but very little in the way of smilies. Whereas Bandit, also Firefox, can gaze serenely, with multi-smilies. Don'tcha just hate smarty pants women?

Seldom use firefox these days seem to just stick to Safari 8)

For anyone thinking of some English Lake District skiing this weekend....please read this :D

YAD MOSS THIS WEEKEND?

OK, the weather looks good and we may well open this weekend (watch the website) BUT we anticipate being very busy.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF COMING PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:

There will be problems parking, long queues for tickets and SERIOUS QUEUES for the lift - perhaps 20-30 mins. Please don't come unless you are happy to put up with ALL this.

ROAD ACCESS will be difficult and some may be blocked, you travel at your own risk. Listen to the radio, watch travel websites. Following Sat Navs caused problems last week leading people down blocked roads.

BRING A SHOVEL to dig out a parking bay. If you leave your car sticking out into the road you may block, or be hit by, the snowplough.

The tow is 30 years old (and most of the operators much older!) THERE WILL BE BREAKDOWNS which we will work hard to fix - but please bear with us.

Please DO NOT COME if you have no experience of using a FAST DRAG LIFT. You must be confident that you can ride all the way without falling off which damages the tow and lengthens the queue.

You will be VERY WELCOME to join us but remember, we are all volunteers, every penny we take gets ploughed back into the facility so that we can survive the lean years and ensure that Yad Moss is there to be enjoyed next time we get snow.

That said - have fun!!

Going skiing tomorrow in the Lakes, really good snow coverage on Blake Fell which should return about 200 to 300M. Bit of a hike to get up & down though, might bump into the odd bemused fell walker. :D

They are expecting large crowds, lots of whom are conditioned to European resort style management, and so are preparing folk. They will now only warrant selling a lift ticket up until 11.30am.

And a message for any one thinking of going to Yad Moss this weekend:

For the safety and enjoyment of users we are going to have to limit numbers this weekend. So for 9th and 10th January WE WILL ONLY GUARANTEE A TICKET IF YOU ARRIVE BEFORE 11.30. After that we reserve the right to close the ticket office. Season ticket holders will not be affected.
