I don't drink alcohol, but I do drink a great deal of tea. GBP4 for a cup of tea is absolutely scandalous! Something must be done about this at once. Where on earth is Gothenburg? If it's in the EU I will write to my Euro MP immediately.

I have a cup of tea at the moment, thank you. I went to our local French market today and practised my French and bought some brioche, so I'm having tea and brioche. I must admit, though, for all my French lessons, I was totally lost when the stallholder rattled off a whole lot of stuff very fast in French.

Finland a pint of not bad beer is 5-6 euros, but wine is 12 euros a glass. I would expect the whole bottle for that price. Hence I drink pints while over there.

No Tony,
They were real French people in a french market. We have a farmer's market in our local town every other Friday, and every year just before Christmas, the French come over specially and do a French market.

I bought some French goat's cheese as well as the brioche, and there were loads of other things for sale - like boar's meat and about 20 different sorts of olive dishes.

But I was very disappointed that I couldn't understand what the guy said once he got into a real flow of French. I very carefully said what I wanted, in pretty good French, and I suppose that enouraged him to believe that I really could speak fluent French, and he just let loose.

It is a bit worrying, because I'm practising for my French ski-ing lessons, and at this rate I won't understand a word they say. I can see myself ski-ing off in the wrong direction, or whatever. Oh well, I still have a few months to practise.

Edit - just saw your last Tony - Gothenburg, something to do with Batman?

I bet you pinched that off one of those translation websites. Writing French on here is very difficult because you can't do the accents unless you go into Word first and then paste it back in.

You shouldn't be so rude about the French. For one thing, I want to be able to ski in France without everyone being really cross with all the 'English' for being rude about the French. And for another thing, all the French I've met have been perfectly nice, ordinary people.

I am ski-ing with the French in the afternoon because there aren't any lessons in English during the afternoon, and I don't want to ski on my own or with my daughter because she skis too fast for me. We were okay in Tignes because luckily I am just as good on ice as she is, but once we're on a decent bit of piste she disappears at about 100 miles an hour while I'm very carefully ski-ing down and remembering to practise all my new techniques.

And I know perfectly well that I could have googled Gothenburg to see where it was before I answered, but I like it when everyone gets so cross about my lack of geographical knowledge. It makes me laugh. :lol: :lol:

Tony, ski-ing with the French is an excellent way of making me concentrate on the language. I learnt more in a week last time, than in about a year of French lessons at school.

Stewart - you mean you really can speak French? I was sure you were using one of those translation sites when you said, in French, that you couldn't see the point, because I don't know what expression they use, but I wouldn't have thought it was the same as the one we use.

It's the ski technical language I'm most stuck on, with French. Like, for example, what is a parallel turn in French?

Edit - I've just found the answer to that one, on the French version of the esf website - it's 'En virages paralleles' (not so hard really!).

Hi,

Came back from BsM a couple of weeks ago and for a "demi" the price ranged from between 2.40euros amd 4.5euros depending on which bar i eventually fell out off....hic!!

For a pitcher of 1664 in Bazoom (about 5 pints worth) from memory was around the 13 - 15 euro mark,so not too bad realy,the ohter ways of keeping the costs down are to drink the "beer pression" (normal draught beer's) or to go to the supermarket and stock up on the plentiful supplies there and have a few before you go out.

I think on the whole to keep costs down on the overall holiday cost is to stay in accommadation that is linked into popular resorts or to stay in the not so well known (or just less glitzy ones as it where),prices can't go to stupid levels or the bars,pubs etc will just start to loose business as has happened here in the UK.

And, anyway, I bet most people don't know exactly where Gothenburg is. I thought it was in one of the northern countries, but I couldn't have said whether it was Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Finland, without checking. And then, on top of that, I wasn't at all sure that they were all in the EU. Geography was never my strong point! )

I wonder what Stewart's doing in Gothenburg. Do you think he's Batman? :D

Edit - Well at least all this wibble had made me do some geography homework. It seems that Norway is the one that isn't in the EU. I wonder if that makes the Norwegian Krona cheaper than the Euro at the moment?

Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden. Kitwe is the second largest city in Zambia. And the reason I have heard of Kitwe is because I've been there. But I haven't been to Gothenburg, and I know very little about it (except that thanks to Bandit I now know that Batman doesn't live there).

One is in Africa, and one is in Europe, but other than that they're both the second largest cities in their own country. I know just about as much about Sweden as I do about any African country (except Zambia as I said because I've been there).

But then, as I have said elsewhere, I have led a very strange life, and I am a pretty unusual person. Do you think most other British people know more about Sweden than Zambia?

You can ski in Sweden, but WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP I would imagine you cannnot ski in Zambia.

I also have not been to Gothenburg, but it would not have anything to do with not knowing where it was :roll:

What were you doing in Gothenburg anyway? I don't suppose you were ski-ing. I looked it up and the nearest ski resort seemed to be Ulricehamn which is something like 80 Km away, and only has 6 pistes.

Zambia is on a plateau, and I seem to remember that the whole country is 6,000 feet up in the air, but I am also pretty sure that it doesn't have any ski resorts :D .

I have been thinking about why beer prices are so high in ski resorts. I think the truth is that the price of pretty much everything is high in French ski resorts.

I remember being very surprised that my ski instructor in La Rosiere drove down to Bourg St Maurice to buy his milk, because it cost so much in the resort. So, I can understand why all bulky and heavy goods (like beer) would be expensive because the ski resorts (or the French ones anyway) tend to be in fairly inaccessible places with poor road access and the transport costs would tend to be high, particularly during the winter.

However, that doesn't explain why my cup of tea would cost me so much in Courchevel if I was foolish enough to try and buy one in a mountain cafe (since tea-leaves are fairly light and compact). I would guess that part of the reason for this is that most skiers are very much a captive audience, in that they don't have transport to get out of the resort and drink elsewhere. Plus I would guess that the rates are very high in the top resorts, and they probably only have a short season to make enough money to keep them going all year. I am only guessing, but I wouldn't think that the summers were anything like as busy as the winters.

And, of course there is the pound/euro effect.

I wasn't but I tried to pull it back round to being ski related by mentioning that Sweden has some ski slopes. It has absolutely nothing to do with how I know where Gothenburg is, and I would also wager that most other people know where it is but not because of anything to do with skiing, so not quite sure where you were going there.
I think you brought in Kitwe as it was somewhere you knew having been there.
I have not, and had not heard of it. I have not been to Gothenburg but have been well aware of its existence since I was about 7 or 8 I would imagine.
I dont think you need to be aware of somewhere just by having been there, was kind of my earlier point.

This all started as it was where Stewart was visiting, and had nothing to do with Africa, but it made for an interesting journey.

As for beer prices, I have not come across anything as high as Stewart encountered in Gothenburg last week, although I have heard of horrendous prices ITRO 20 euros a beer in some French resorts, especially over new year.

That, IMO, is nothing short of scandalous and taking advantage.
