The GDP(PPP) of Bulgaria in 2008 was estimated at $93.98 billion, what % of this is made up by contributions from Bulgarians who live in Borovets?

Come on now, these sorts of questions need answered

It is good for beginners, plenty of variety in terrain & plenty of beginners slopes.

As snowbandit suggested, levs are best to take. There are plenty of ATMs in the resort so using cards isn't a problem. Travellers cheques aren't a good idea as only a few places change them (Flora & Rila), plus I generally find them more hassle than they're worth.

Well the site in my sig contains an article where I point out the vast differences between the Alps & Bulgaria. Many people seem to come expecting the Alps level of skiing & piste lengths.

There are of course, thefts & problems that some people experience but in my experience it is no worse than anywhere else I've been.

In short, I'm not too sure.

C'mon you two, give MyB a chance, he sounds a nice guy, and he is a Geordie.

Borovets, generally good skiing, not extensive. The people we met were generous to a fault. Ski School standard was high. Main lifts good, minor lifts, sore on the bum.

Food less than average. Cockroaches bigger than anywhere else.

Did we enjoy it? We loved it. Would we go again? We probably wouldn't, but I could understand someone going back there.

It's a ski resort, it's god a reasonably variety of pistes. The nightlife is good should you choose to go out.

It doesn't have the piste lengths of the Alps but it is much cheaper (certainly to eat).

There are erotic bars therefore you'd have to make your own mind up about taking your family there.

I think many people come expecting too much. It's a ski resort, you're there to ski - so do that.

As previously mentioned, I don't really know why the reviews are SO bad. However tourism has apparently increased by 5-10% year on year since 2005.

ps. I wasn't trying to start an argument in my previous post ... it was meant as a joke.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate that there is more milage in other areas of Europe and I have said in previous threads that milage I can live without, quality skiing is a different kettle of fish,
I have read a lot of reports of skiers having nightmare holidays due to hookers in hotel bars and poor ski school and piste preparation and theft, negatives reports seem to out weigh the positives.
I won't bore you with the nasty tales from my trip to Borovets, but I too am with them above, and I definitely won't be going back.

Start of the third week in March, and the pisteurs had already packed up for the season

The bar owners/managers were livid as nobody wanted to wade through crud to have an apres beer or lunch.

Re:Anything you need to know about Borovets

Hello everyone, my first post :)

I went to Borovets last February with very low expectations having read many of the dire reviews that exist, I have to say it exceeded my expectations, admitedly the conditions were superb, some days we had 2 foot of powder

We were a group of 3 families 13 in total and stayed in a village about 15 minutes drive from Borovets, in a brand new villa, that cost us GBP900 for the week (half term), I found food and drink in the village extremely cheep, but in Borovets it doubled even there though (for comparison) you could get a pint for under GBP2.00.

The ski infrastructure was very good I would say with only a few "Pomas" on the shorter runs and the majority of lifts modern 4 man many with soft starts. the scenery is superb.

If you are after piste milage then you will run out after a few days but I believe the off piste is good, although I never took the oppertunity apart from taking some lines through the forest. But for family skiing with the occaisional solo foray it is a smashing resort. The runs vary from exposed mountain reds and blacks to sedate treelined runs from top to bottom, enough variation for all levels and ideal progression slopes for learners.

I found the place clean (what isnt when its covered with snow) and the locals friendly.

We ate either on the mountain or in the resort most days and never had a bad meal, we tried many of the local dishes, (my favourite dish was banski sash)

For half term last Feb I paid 3K in total for Lufthansa flights, accomodation, lift pass, ski hire and food/drink budget for my family of 5, which is value for money in my opinion.

I have no agenda in providing this information but simply want to give you my perspective as someone who feared the worst and was very pleasantly surprised.

My posting virginity is lost.

Verglas,
Congratulations on being brave enough to write, and submit, your first post :D :D.

I'm glad you enjoyed your holiday to Borovets. How did you get to and from your villa? Did they provide a shuttle bus?

For comparison, 3 of us have booked to go to Courchevel by train during Feb half-term, staying in self-catering accommodation, and it's going to cost around GBP1100 per person for the train, the transfers, the accommodation, ski passes, ski and boot hire, and ski lessons.

Ally

Re:Anything you need to know about Borovets

Verglas,
I should have also said, that our first family ski holiday was to Borovets, 7 years ago. We went there because it was the only place we could afford, at the time. I got a special last minute offer from Airtours for the first week in Jan, and it was only GBP820 for myself and the 2 children - half board, flights, transfers, ski hire, passes, and lessons! So it cost a lot less for the 3 of us, than we're paying now per person to go to Courchevel (although we are going in Feb half-term).

Unfortunately I never got to ski at Borovets myself, because I'd broken my shoulder practising on the dry ski slope, but I did get to go up the mountain on the chair lift and walk down the pistes, and the kids skied.

I did find quite a few bad things about the resort, but at least it started my younger daughter ski-ing, and we've been to other resorts pretty much every year since then. If Borovets hadn't been so cheap we wouldn't have been able to afford a ski holiday at all, that first year.

Ally

But since they have been upping there prices dramatically over the last few years there are now much better places at comparable prices.

Soldeu in 2008/9 for example cost me the same as Borovets the year before...and there was no comparison.

Re:Anything you need to know about Borovets

Verglas,
Did your costings include ski lessons? I'm ashamed to admit that lessons are a very large item on our bill. We're all having different sorts of lessons, but it's working out at an average bill of GBP250 per person for 6 days. My lessons are the most expensive - 330 euros for 6 days, morning and afternoon .

The lift pass is the other killer - 216 euros for 7 days for the Courchevel one.

The accommodation, transfers, and train cost about GBP600 per person.

I haven't costed out food because I'm not planning on spending much more than we do at home (apart from the fact that I suppose the basic ingredients will cost a bit more in the supermarket). We will be cooking in the apartment.

Borovets is definitely much cheaper than Courchevel. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum. We started with Borovets, and then moved up the scale in both quality and price, once we could afford it.

Ally

Great, glad I do have some use to people!!!
Suggestion for you - take your Mrs and No1 daughter up the Penken early doors (first lift 8.15 I think) and ski down the front side on the fairly gentle reds before it gets busy. Best getting off their by 10 before ski schools get out though. Head over the back (quite steep and challenging, but you can take the chair down) and go up the Schneekaar and do Red 7. They will love it.
They will also love the chilled out blues and reds over the back in Rastkogel too, they get the sun all day which is nice as well. Plenty to play on there, as the Ahorn is very limited. The Ebbenwald red down the Ahorn turns into the Abfahrt off the bottom, and you will like that, but I only suggest you try it mid afternoon when its had a little sun on it, or when its been snowing as it can be very icy in parts. But its a fantastic run for good skiers.
Like I said, PM me if you need any more.
Sorry this is off thread. Back to Bulgaria now.....

Re:Anything you need to know about Borovets

AllyG yes that included lessons as they were packages, the component cost of each item Ski/boot hire, lift pass cost as much as the package with lessons. In the end only 3 of our family used the lessons and even then only about 50% of the time.

That was the worst aspect of the trip the tuition was very poor compared to Poiana, I was stood at the top of a lift one day and two of my children apeared with 4 other friends, I asked where the instructor was and they said they had lost him! As far as I could see, our instructor deliberately lost people during the day (but at least they weren't children). I think losing children during a lesson is really terrible.

Ally

No sorry Ally never saw that.

My wife dicede she wanted a private lesson one day and I met her and her instructor at lunchtime, this guy was calld "Freaky" and he told us he used to be the Bulgarian ski jump champion and had competed in the Olympics with "Eddie the Eagle", he then went on to explain that Eddie joined him in a ski jump tour/roadshow type thing in Bulgaria, and the best bit, Eddie was responsible for introducing the Mars bar to Bulgaria, because he brought so many of them over with him and it was allegedly his staple diet!!!

Perhaps if anyone sees Eddie they could verify this factoid?

I wouldn't trust some of the dubious looking ski shops around the resort :)

I didn't have lessons in Borovets but while I was there I heard about and saw some appauling behaviour towards children from instructors including children being left behind and making there own way down. However I was also told about some brilliant instructors including the instructor my friends had.

Quality product FQ, look like they've been used in Scotland for a few seasons!

This year in BG they tried to give my 10 year old a pair of what looked like old Alpine skinny straight skis, after some arm waving they drafted in some carvers from another shop.

All part of the experience eh?

Re:Anything you need to know about Borovets

Twinners hired my daughter a damaged pair of skis and boots in La Rosiere, but when we took them back, they exchanged them for a lovely pair of roxy skis at no extra cost (I'd paid for cheaper skis), and the only problem I had then was getting them away from her at the end of the holiday!

I don't remember there being anything wrong with the skis and boots my kids hired in Borovets. They looked well used, that was all, whereas all the ones we hired subsequently in other places looked pretty new.

Ally

Amazing what you pick up the more you go. If you were first timers, you'd get palmed off with all sorts of garbage gear. Strangely enough, when asked in Andorra what sort of skis I wanted, and then told them what I owned etc, a nice shiny pair of Stockli's were produced. Innit

Hi Adam
We were out there last 27th Dec to 3rd Jan,
same dates this year as we had such a great time.
Have had so many conflicting reports on how much snow there is,
could you tell us what skiing condition's are like.
Might see you out and about there, 22 of us this year are stopping at the Rila.
Cheers Neil
