Do I have to pay for Skis and boots because it is over my luggage allowance?

I have paid for Ski carriage but I have no idea if that include my boots. If it doesnt then do I have to take the weight of the boots from my luggage allowance?

It states this in my confirmation in Inghams but bearing in mind you need lots of heavy stuff in your luggage when skiing what actually happens? will I have to pay extra for my boots at GBP15 per kilo?
Re:Do I have to pay for Skis and boots because it is over my luggage allowance?

Sorry to say this but:

Oh no, here we go again!!!

This has been done to death on a number of threads.

Ok, general rule of thumb is that you are allowed an allowance for your 1 hold bag. This includes your boots, which you are probably besty advised to pack in your suitcase and putting in the hold. You are also allowed ski carraige for which the rules can be very "woolly". It depends who you are flying with, but I tend to pack my ski bag with some clothing so that I can not just get more in, but so that the skis actually have some padding to prevent damage.

Make sure you use plenty of bubble wrap as well.

Some airlines might check and be anal about what you have got in your bag. Again, this depends who you fly with and from what airport. In the past I have never had the contents of my very large and heavy ski bag checked (touch wood this continues) but I know others who have had to unpack and repack!!!

Who are you flying with and from where?

Tony,

I am also booked with Inghams.

With ski boots in my rucsac, and carrying some extra gear for painting, I am always under 15kgm. I will be taking gear for two weeks of skiing. Inghams usually allow 20 kgms. You can also get some weight into your hand baggage.

Re:Do I have to pay for Skis and boots because it is over my luggage allowance?

sorry dave, I am not new to skiing, however, just brought skiis for the first time. Last year at LGW the put my boots through "oversized baggae" and didn't charge even though I was upto my allowance. This year I am adding skis so the question is will they take my boots too like they did last year.

I didn't pay extra last year!

Re:Do I have to pay for Skis and boots because it is over my luggage allowance?

Hi Tonyp, I wasn;t suggesting that you were a beginner, but a newbie to J2ski, so you wouldn't have seen the previous postings. There are a good number of beginners, as well though.

I will be in the Arlberg from mid-Jan, then a day or so somewhere near Innsbruck, then transferring to Niederau for a week or so. Then first two weeks of March, will be based in Niederau, but also covering the Skiwelt and Kitsbuhle.

I suggest that what you got away with before, is no guide to the future. Also, you may get away with something at the UK end, but be caught out on the return journey.

I suggest that you look at your travel docs when they arrive, and read the baggage allowance. Then get email Inghams, and ask for clarification of the ski boots issue.

However, I go back to my earlier point, you ought to be able to get your boots into your baggage, and still get your baggage weight at well under 20kgms.

Suggest you do 2 things:
Make out a packing list, save it onto your PC.
Have a practise packing, and weigh it. AS TonyH says, you can pack some lightweight stuff around your skis. Sallos, for instance.

Dave Mac wrote:Inghams usually allow 20 kgms.

Very much depends on the airline they are chartering for your trip, nothing to do with the tour op. However, the ski carriage cost IS down to the tour op.
It is of course very different if you are booking your own flights with the likes of Easyjet and Ryanair, as has been well documented on here before.

Yes Tony i have seen those comments about budget airlines, so you guys think there should be not much of an issue with stuffing the ski bag with stuff " to protect the skis" and then putting the boots in with normal 23 kgs that has been allocated?

Personally I'd pack boots in your case so they are away in the hold and protected. I have seen boot bags come out on the carousel with screws and bits of metal falling out of them.

I did that for years and came home with loads of clean clothes.
Skiing clothing is the important stuff:

Jacket(s)
Fleeces/mid layers
Base layers/thermals
Socks
Sallopettes
Hat(s)
Gloves
Goggles, sunnies

When it comes to clothing, I take 1 pair of jeans in addition to the ones I travel in, around 3 t shirts and sweatshirts for evenings, pub, around the chalet, and a pair of shorts and flip flops to doss around in the chalet/room, as well as a non skiing jacket which I travel in.
That should be more than enough, in addition to pants, socks etc.

I also packed cowboy outfits and a cow costume last time I went, but thats another story.....

Inghams told us the same thing last year but the guy at the airport check in desk said that Boot Bags went free - you could always check with the airport.

My boots always go in my hold bag now and even with hairdryer, straighteners, make up bag etc I still get it under 20kgs, where as years ago I was always over allowance and had a separate boot bag. Just remember you've got to carry it all once in resort!

We flew with Monarch on another trip to Canada last year and were told that snowboard bags were allowed up to 20kgs and were allowed boarding boots in but that ski bags were only allowed up to 12kgs - who knows why
Re:Do I have to pay for Skis and boots because it is over my luggage allowance?

I have taken skis on many trips, with Crystal ski mainly, I usually take the skis in a ski case and the boots in a seperate boot bag, usually with a towel or something for protection. I have always paid for the ski carriage, and never had any problems at all, they take the skis and boots as "one item" and pack them in the hold. touch wood, never had anything damaged. This time I'm taking a bigger ski bag, with 2 pairs inside, and one boot bag, I don't expect any problems.

Where did you get that from old mate? Whenever I have flown before, boots have been included in your checked baggage allowance.

Also, re Monarch, they are as good as you will get flying to Europe TBH. But I wouldnt fancy going standard class across the pond. They do operate soe A330 Airbus's which are ok, but seat pitch is not great. It is an economy charter airline remember. If you want quality, go with a national carrier like Air Canada or even Virgin.

Monarch also still operate a couple of very old A310 Airbus's, all one class and 10 across - some of you may have experienced these old bangers before. They tend to operate Gatwick-Geneva routes often. You'll know which ones they are as they have VDU's hanging from the ceiling instead of flat screen TVs. If you end up on 1 of those across the atlantic, I would suggest you ask for standing.......

When ever I have flown boots have always been included and I have always dropped them with the skis at large luggage, that has been the case with Easy jet, BA and the Irish lot, I don't know about TO's
as I don't use them

Well let me confirm that when flying charter with tour ops, your boots are part of your luggage allowance, nothing to do with ski carriage.

Unfortunately I have to endure the 10 hrs with monarch, but for the price that inghams offered you gotta just do it!!

Just read paper work and they have allowed me 23kg's for luggage so should be ok even if they just take the boots with the ski's, I think they will do that anyway.

11 more sleeps :-)
Hi, You will be charged extra fro your ski's, check under sporting equipment, boots won't be a problem as part of your luggage.

Correct. Your boots will be included in your 23kgs but you will pay extra for ski carriage at whatever the tour ops rate is quoted as.

your boots are included in the cost of your ski carriage along with your poles, don't waste your baggage allowance by putting your boots in your luggage send them with your ski's.

There may be a limit on the weight of the ski's. With some airlines its 15Kg
