New skis

I have always rented skis but have now got my own all mountain ski's of which I haven't tried yet.

My concern is how different will they be to the normal rental "superior" skis that I am used to? Will I have to ski differently ie "work them harder" or will it be much the same?

TP

Re:New skis

I got my own skis when I was in my 3rd week, and it made a huge difference to my skiing straight away! Maybe I just got lucky with the right skis for me, but 3 seasons on I still love them :)

Re:New skis

Thanks guys that fills me with confidence, I wasn't sure if the characteristic of a "freeride ski" dramatically different. When you read reviews on ski some people say that you do not get the same feel on piste but off piste will have loads more fun??

Two weeks time I will know!

Re:New skis

I looked at these babies (Atomis Sweet Daddy) on Sport Conrad not so long ago as they were selling for about GBP150 with bindings. They are not too wide in the tip and tial but 80 in the waist, and reviews suggest they are quite quick edge to edge and good on ice too with impressive edges.
I saw them more as a touring ski tbh which is why I didnt go for them in the end.

Interestingly enough, I have a new pair of skis I havent used yet, all mountain Scott Neo's at 82 in the waist so will be having a similar change to yourself.

However, I did ski a week last season on some Scott Patrol's which were 78 in the waist, and have to say I found them much more fun and easy to ski than the standard carvers. Heavier and easier to plough through crud and lumps, brilliant on ice, and generally more confident all over. Thats not to say they are going to ski anything like my Neo's or your Atomics, but I don't think you'll find the transition too difficult if you are a good skier.

Having those will mean you can feel happy bobbing off between pistes or in the fresh snow as well.

Re:New skis

Thanks Tony, I think I am more excited about trying the new skis than actually going away!

Interestingly the Sweet daddys are very light in weight, normally the rentals are quite heavy, this I assume will be easier jumping over bumps etc

Rentals are not usually heavy as a rule, although to be fair rental bindings can be. It depends what you have skied on before as rental ski.
I have had all sorts of different skis thrown at me in the past, long before I got to know more about what was what. Fischer, Blizzard, Elan, Salomon....

Its great to have new skis to try out.

When and where are you going?
