Worst skiing nightmares...

What was your worst experience or nightmare skiing. Mine was in 1995 when we flew to Bulgaria whilst my luggage had a holiday all of its own & went to Frankfurt. Not very helpful when your going skiing & you have no gear, never a dull moment. :(

Finn

I've never really had one either. I suppose hubby breaking his collar bone could be classed as a holiday nightmare. But it was more of a nightmare for him really, he missed three days skiing I didn't.

That was in Bulgaria too.

Re:Worst skiing nightmares...

I've had a couple of skiing nightmares, both involved Argentiere and ice.

The first was on a nasty off piste mogully type run, I'd fallen and lost both skis, when I stood up I lost my footing and went careering off the side of the piste (off piste piste) towards a very large rock. I was convinced I was dead but somehow managed to literally steer myself around the rock and then came to a grinding halt and burst into tears. Scared the cr@p out of me.

The second, which was the following season, not far from the first incident, was a sheet ice black run, EVERYONE that attempted it fell and slid to the bottom, why they didn't close the run I have no idea, so knowing what was to come I just got on with it and ended up in a bush.

Don't think the helicopter at the bottom of the run was much of a comfort either.

5 hour delay for Glasgow-->Heathrow flight. Missed connection, ending up in Toronto trying to get to Calgary (miss that connection too) and end up on the last flight out. 5 hours on the worst plane of all time, Air Canada from the 80s followed by missing a transfer and missing luggage. Great, night in a hotel and 6 am transfer bus out. Fun fun.

Re:Worst skiing nightmares...

Getting home from one ski trip with only 5 days to the next one, suddenly realised that my passport was in the pocket of the trousers I'd just put in the wash. A feeling of dread came over me!
Luckily those lovely passport office people in Peterborough sorted it all out without any fuss.

14.5 hour delay coming back from Tignes last year wasn't pleasant. A 9am Chambery flight became a 11.30pm Grenoble one. It was only because the pilot coming to collect us from the gate that we got away at all!

Stepping out of a ski on the North Face of the Valuga wasn't the best of moves. It ended up 200m below us and I had to get down a silly steep pitch on one ski.

My first taste of sking we went to Lapland - fell on the 3 day and ripped my cruicate ligament, spent the next 3 days in a foreign hospital miles and miles from the hotel, we flew back home to England had to have a reconstruction of my knee. Then re-hab for the rest of my life but it has not stopped me, we went to Kransja gora last year and loved it. Now I wear a brace and am off to Austria early January. I just love it!!!!

DC9 I would bet, those things are as old as dinosaurs and yet they still use them internally!

I am lucky enough to say I have not had any major problems with skiing holidays, although 2 things spring to mind:

1 Being knocked over by a border on an icy slope in Mayrhofen and crashing into my daughter and another skier who had crashed into her. The other lady took a whack to the head and was helicoptered off the mountain. I was very shaken up and couldnt ski the rest of the day despite luckily not being injured. This was Xmas Day too.

2 Going to Serre Che with a group of lads in order to make up numbers. Me and my OH luckily were in another annex, but sadly we still heard every single swear word they were shouting at each other at 3 in the morning on 2 nights, along with one of the doors being kicked in, and we got daggers off everyone else in the hotel the following mornings. Moral of the story is not to travel with all male parties I believe.

Re:Worst skiing nightmares...

The year of no snow went to a tiny resort in Austria. Only one tiny run- you just got off a little higher up if you were ''expert'' Total waste of money. Went to a better resort on 5th day, but waited nearly 2 hours for last bus home. Dead busy and everyone pushed on- as I was at front of queue I shouted at bus driver that I was on that bus and if necessary I would throw someone off the bus! Totally showed myself up! To add insult to injury I left my ski on back of bus so had to wait for it to go around again to face same bus driver to retrieve lost ski! Why my kids find me embarrassing I will never know!

And hubby got flu after 3 days skiing! Holiday from hell!

Here we go,

Third day of first season in the states,

Dropped of something a little to big with a flat landing, ending up front flipping with my legs coming over the wrong way. Thought i'd broke some ribs so skied down to the medical centre, after x rays found out i'd broke my back in two places.

3 weeks in Vail hospital and 6 months in a body brace lots of fun lol, note to self dont jump of things with a flat landing anymore

Insure & Go saved me with the medical bills, i'd still be washing up if i didn't have insurance

Thanks Ally! Even three years on the kids still talk about it! You know how you lose it with someone because you will never see them again! It was when my son said where is your other ski mum and my heart just sank! Humiliation or what! I honestly would have punched someone if I hadn't got on the bus after waiting for 2 hours. It was my only chance to get back to the resort. Message to self- ALWAYS take mobile phone!

^That looks fun!
Was couple years ago in France me and my buddy decided to have a little fun off piste on this possibly 12ft jump into the fluffy stuff; however misjudged it and didn't realize there was a pretty deep hole right bellow it, hesitated at the edge and feel straight in, ski's were all over the gaff and spend about 1/2 hours looking for it, not major but i bloody panicked because i was pretty much trapped in the hole and we couldn't find my ski's :S !
