OMG what shall I do?

Here's a conundrum:

I have a ski holiday booked and paid for on the 9th Jan for 1 week. I have also been informed today that I have been shortlisted for a job and the interview is the 13th and 14th of Jan.

Help...I just don'tknow what to do!!!

Is it a job you really want/need?

If yes, cancel the ski holiday or contact your insurer/travel agent about a change of date or cancellation. If no, go on holiday :wink:

Fly back for the interview, if the employer won't shunt your interview into the following week.

A world class employer would accommodate your situation & reschedule the interview for you, if they wont you have to question what type of employer they are going to be.

I would contact them, and ask about rescheduling. If they say no, and you have to cancel, you can remind them at the interview, to what extreme lengths you are prepared to go, to work for them. You never know, there might be a skier interviewing, who would recognise your sacrifice.

It is all so complicated, I resigned from my previous job withour getting another one first. Financially at the moment I don't need to work until April (Which is when the new job would start). However we are relocating and if I sell my house and buy the one we're after then there's no rush to get a job for April. We have several viewings booked in for our house.

The other thing is that the interview is for my second choice school. The interviews for the school I really want are on the same days (shortisting hasn't taken place yet but it's the same authority, same person spec and same application form so I think I will be offered an interview)

I have spoken to the TO, they have been very helpful and said they would let me change the holiday and also said that there is no rush to make a decision yet.

I soooooo don't want to change my holiday. I'm praying that I'll get an offer on the house in the next week, then I can take more time applying for a jobs.

Eljay, can you do one of your 'hokey kokey...tra la la' dances for me please?! :lol:

It doesn't work like that with HT interviews. They are two days long and a panel of 8-10 people. Its too much hassle for them.

Your right Col, I know that and the TO have been great I can take exactly the same holiday three weeks later, no extra cost apart from GBP20 admininistration fee. It's not a lack of holiday I am worried about it is not being able to go with the group that were going on the 9th. :cry:

As you say No job = no ski. Those of us working could pack it in right now and go skiing (if there was any snow!) for a week. It's surely a means to an end to go for the job now and reap the rewards later - God I sound like my Dad, sorry :shock:

It sounds pretty much like a 50:50: situation you have here, head versus heart.

I guess only you know which one you will regret losing the most afterwards -the holiday or the job.

And you will never, ever know whether you made the right choice, because you won't know what would have happened if you'd chosen the other option. Such is life!

What I generally do, in these situations, is make a choice based on the best information I have at the time, and then stop thinking about the other road I didn't take before it drives me completely mad.

Just make a choice, and move on. I reckon whichever one you choose it will turn out fine.

I have to say, though, if it was me I'd choose the job - but that's just because of my puritanical upbringing. I am always ruled by my head, not my heart :cry:

Strikes me that you should make the decision quickly and re-arrange the holiday now and in a few days it won't be an issue. The decision is the hardest part, the rest just falls into place after that.

Better to make the wrong decision quickly than make no decision at all.

Hi all, long time no post.

I think you made the right decision with the interview. The snow will always be there (hopefully!) but in this climate there aren't too many jobs going.
I was all set to go and do a season in Banff getting my instructor badges. I had paid some of the money and was set to leave mid December.
I applied for a graduate scheme for next September when I get back but didn't get the job. They rang back 2 days later and offered me a permanent job that was better than the grad scheme with better opportunities. The only catch was it started straight away and not next year.
A massive amount of soul searching went on, with my heart and finances committed to Canada and my head and logic saying take the job.
5 weeks into the job and I definitely made the right choice although I am still gutted.

I reckoned it was better to get a job in the industry I wanted, at a time when graduate jobs are hard to come by. As you said, no job = no skiing. Plus, my new company have been very understanding and have said I may be able to the course in a few years time. If it leads to happier times at a job you enjoy, then it must be worth it! :-)

Hiya. Sorry to hear you wont be joining us in ADH now, but I am pleased its for the right reasons. For the sake of a GBP20 admin fee, changing the holiday is absolutely the right thing to do. I was looking forward to skiing with you and Scapula, but there will be other opportunities. Whereas, there might not be other opportunities for your career. Best of luck for the job, although I feel a little sad you 2 won't be there now.

The main reason I have been in such a quandary about this Tony is because we were going to be meeting up with you and Mrs H. If it wasn't for that, changing the holiday to three weeks later would be no hardship.

I did explore the option of flying back for the interview but that would mean missing two days skiing and it would have become very complicated.

I hope there will be another opportunity for me to see you put thise Neos to work. :wink:

I'm glad you came to a decision about this. It seems the silver lining in the cloud is that the snow is likely to be much better in Feb than Jan :D. You just need to find some more friends to go with now.

We had to give up a ski hol last year we both had job interviews. We could'nt change the holiday as I still would have needed the time off work for the interview and could not have got another weeks holiday off work. So my Son and his girlfriend benefited from a free holiday.
I got the job but decided against it which is just as well as I would'nt have got the job I have just started. Hubby got his job but then 3 months later the window business picked up so he packed it in. Taking into account it was still the wisest thing for us to do.

Just priced up a 5 day break in Alpe D'huez from 7th to 12th Jan. The Flight + transfer = GBP100 each but can't find anywhere to stay for just five days. :roll:

You might strike lucky with Interhome. Over the years we have had many short stays in apartments through them. It's low season, and some owners will take short rentals to get a booking.

Maybe Pablo is wondering why you don't go from e.g. Sat 2nd - Sat 9th Jan? Too expensive? Too busy?

you HAVE to go to the interview.
this is rich, coming from someone who has called home from a drunken week's ski holiday and called school at same time, telling them i had fallen, pulled tendons and couldn't fly. the local doctor even gave me a sick note and crutches!
on another occasion, i packed in my teaching job and just drove out to niederau for a season .. but i wouldn't do it know, the job market has changed.
teaching jobs are now fewer and much further between.... SENCO jobs in wales regularly result in 30-plus applications, altho here in west mids schools struggle to recruit.
however, you CAN change the ski holiday. women are going back to their teaching jobs after mat leave in order to keep their job, while years ago they wouldn't have.
mind you, i wouldn't be a HT for all the leeks in wales!

The holiday has now been rescheduled. Every cloud has a silver lining, I texted a friend today after changing the dates, a couple of hours later she had booked too. :D

ldavies, there seems to be a shortage of Head Teachers at the moment and it's going to get worse apparently...lot's of heads retiring and not enough people to fill the jobs. Lot's of people feel the same as you I guess.

Well folks, I've just been shortlisted for another job and the interview is on the 12th of Jan the day after I get back from my re-scheduled ski holiday in ADH...

Do you think that 5 days skiing will be good preparation for two interviews? :lol:

Congratulations on being shortlisted again :D I think a ski-ing holiday is an excellent preparation for a job interview, but just make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before.

The interview's in Somerset so I'll be driving from London the night before! I will however make sure they know that I rescheduled a skiing holiday for the sake of the interview, in case I look tired...Shall I wear my my bobble hat and goggles to the interview so they can really see how I managed to get there by the skin of my teeth?!!! :lol:

I've got that covered...I'll be thinking about the skiing holiday accross the pond that I've promised myself if I get the job!
