Seven weeks to go tomorrow (22nd Nov). Somebody mentioned a Christmas thing in between to help pass the time but still seems like an age. Are you all booked and ready, and where are you off to?

We're booked. Going to Mayrhofen in March. We usually go away early Jan so waiting 2 more months is killing me.

It is concerning that the ground is warm at the end of November. Natural snow will not stick, unless there is a serious and sustained downturn in ground temps.

If we can get a few days of close to zero temps, the snow guns can be switched on, and the bacteria will surely do it's job.

Won't be able to answer that until I strap the skis on. Won't really know until I have my first 20+ run day in N. Since in my first week in N, I am skiing alone, I would expect to get 60km+ per day. Except for the Monday, my b/d. I will be plied with drink for most of the day. Of course it would be impolite to refuse.

Also, except that my ski buddy may well arrive, and he is undergoing some treatment. I will spend what time is required with him, we have skiied together for many years.
What prompts the question?

As a result of an impromptu decision to take the family for a white xmas instead of waiting until our trip in Feb has resulted in us only having 25 days to go :P

We go on the 26th too. For the last two years we have been away for New Year week and have had the whole family round to us for xmas dinner. This year we will go to my mum's for dinner.

Agree bandit. Prices are being cut but if there ain't the spare cash in the bank then there ain't nowt to pay for the holiday with. I'd love to be in a position to ski more than once a season but as I work for myself, any time off is time without being paid.

We have been in March for the last couple of years and are going in January this year (well, next year) so I will be feeling the opposite :(

Although I want to have a short break in Chamonix if we can, maybe April, we'll see.

Got Christmas first though and I get reeeeeeeeeeeally excited about that!

I give myself a ski connected project to concentrate on, which makes me feel I am making progress towards the ski holiday, without counting the days.

Currently, I am going to French classes so that I can ski in French speaking lessons in the afternoon (they don't do English speaking lessons in the afternoon in Courchevel 1550), and I am trying to lose weight so that I can get my ski trousers on, and I am trying to get fit so that I will be able to ski all day without dropping dead from exhaustion and wobbly legs.

Nelly - sneaking in an extra ski holiday in April sounds like an excellent idea to me :thumbup:

I will be sorting out my boat which unlike the other ones damaged on Windermere which have sunk, mine ended up stuck on top of a jetty with three posts stuck into her hull :cry:

Thanks Ally we live in Lancashire so have not had the same probs as in Cumbria. Been up today when the flooding has receded a lot and it is still pretty dreadful. Some poor people up there have lost far more than we have :(

Nightmare!! I had many sleepless nights during the summer when the strong winds were blowing worried whether our boat would still be floating in the morning. Thankfully, no damage for us and we're now out of the water and safely tucked up in the boatyard. I hope that the damage can be repaired and with fair winds you'll be back on the water.

I like Val Thorens. I think it's great. We've been there twice now, 2 years running. The ski-ing area is vast, and there's a large number of runs to come down to get back to the resort - not like those places where everyone ends up coming down the same blue run at the end of the day.

My trip to Les Men is by coach too...keeping this trip to a tight budget has allowed me to have another trip...possibly a third if I all goes to plan.

I don't mind the coach because I usually sleep the whole journey after the ferry anyway. Flying is much quicker but so more stressful for me.

It is very cheap it works out at GBP150pp return from home to appartment (That's for new year week!)

That's very cheap. So what else have you got to pay for - just lift passes and food? The lift passes are so expensive now. It's totally unbelievable how much they cost, 7 days for 3 valleys = 267 euros.

Back to the subject:

I'm holding out for a last minute deal to anywhere in the Skiwelt, Austria. Want to go 16th Jan. Last year I held out until the week before xmas before booking and got half board, 7nights in Scheffau with flights from Cardiff for GBP450pp. If I can get close to that again this year I might be able to afford another week in late march.

My Val Thorens trip had a basic cost of GBP319 inc lift pass, accom and travel. Not bad, until you add on the extras, GBP70 for ski hire, GBP40 for lift pass extension, couple of nights out GBP40 deposit etc etc so it came to GBP480 plus a returnable damage deposit of GBP40. Plus on top of that food and drink (drink will be lots as its a uni trip, with around 2000 students in VT at the same time!) so looking at a fair bit more! The advantages of coach though being that there's no weight limits, so i can stock up on foods to take with me!

Looking good. It definitely looks like the deals are starting to appear. I still gotta hold my nerve for another couple of weeks. There are some awesome deals to france but the 6 euros for a beer just doesn't add up for me!

Still not a bad price.

I have my own skis and boots so I haven't got to shell out for equipment hire and there is no charge for ski carraige on the coach.

Food and drink is essential and the way I look at it is that if I were staying at home I would have to buy food...I will probably eat in the appartment some but do not intend to be a slave to the cooker.

As for drink...that'll bump the total cost up, as us oldies can afford and cope with more than you students! :mrgreen:

hmmmm maybe i should offer the rugby club that i work at some money for the 12 bottles we have as it isn't selling! :P
I won a bottle of tequila in a raffle the other week so that's coming along also!
We're stopping in a big supermarket before making the climb up the mountain so i can get stuff there!
I only need to cook 5 nights so lots of pasta isn't going to cost much! Planning on eating breakfast brunch things that you get from sainsbury's, basically potato and bacon in this tin foil wrapper, can be kept in a cupboard for months so will stock up on that before i leave, only takes 10mins in the frying pan! Basically thinking around GBP50 on food for the week (going to try and eat as little for lunch as possible) and about GBP250 on nights out drinking!

Jaegermeister is always a good idea IMO. I was in a ski hut in Nassfeld last year when the Jaegermeister bear arrived on a promo thing. The place was off the hook, my head was suffering the next day, but the 50cms of fresh over night helped recovery. I'm off first weekdn in january to Bad Kleinkirchenheim, we got a family appt. there, we'll go woth the kids in march, & I'm gettin out to Cahmonix or Tignes end of april, start of May.
Let the snow fall & bring it on.

We're away to Les Houches on 2nd January - husband is being sent up into the loft this morning to get the gear down.... :)

Pablo, how's the Scottish white stuff coming along? I lived in Glasgow until march this year - gonna miss the early morning runs to Glencoe!

I live in Glasgow, Merchant City. Looking good, people have been making lift served turns at Cairngorms already and my closes, Glencoe, looks to be shaping up. Filling in nicely :D

I'm so jealous!!

We lived on York St, used to spend an indecent amount of time & money in The Brunswick....

I pretty much learned to ski at Cairngorm & The Lecht. Couldn't understand where the rocks & mud were when I finally went to a French resort ;)

The Brunswick is probably less than 5 minutes from my front door, I am in the old post office building on South Fredrick.

They are definitely not at Glencoe ;)

Thats a hell of a deal to be fair. However I must work and flights from the UK are not so useful as I would need to fly there first to get them )

Need to decide on somewhere for Christmas though, any ideas?

Austria, Germany or Switzerland
Train station in resort
3 nights stay
Decent quality hotel
Snow

Tino, for the all round experience, Zermatt, though looking at the number of lifts open today, you would not want to be there right now :shock:
The lift co. had more open earlier, but the hills seem to have closed!

Last Sunday I got off the KM cable car and walked the 150m of flat before the run down to Plata Rosa, 70km wind, -17oC and snowing lightly. With the ice crystals blowing about the from of me was frozen solid by the time I tarted riding including both sides of my sunglasses. I had to ride the entire run in extremely low visibiity with the naked eye!!!

Had looked at Zermatt but hotels are not looking good. Also I have been three times in the last couple of months. I do agree it will be kicking, but I fancy somewhere a little smaller. Saas Fee was right up there.

I suggest looking at Engelberg as a possible. Pretty lively centre, less cute than Zermatt or Saas-Fee, good railway access right into the centre. Lively nightlife 8)

I normally take both goggles and sunglasses, but forgot the goggles in my rush to get out!!

Actually I have been looking at investing a BlackDiamond backpack. Still undecided, I would probably leave it somewhere.
