I am doing a "cheap as chips" option in Jan 2010.

Flights from LPL to Nice GBP61 Return
Transfers Nice to Isola 2000 GBP2 return
seven nights selfcatering Apt 4
(shared between 2) + six day lift
pass + ski & boot hire = GBP258

Therefore full trip excl meals and refreshments GBP321. Of course I could well end up spending a fortune on food/Drink however hopefully will make more use of supermarkets than restaraunts.

You never know there might be enough left in the kitty for another trip in March/April time :D

One of the main reasons I chose Isola (2 Euro transfer) Local bus company does it however you do have to book in advance. Transfer takes you from front of airport to middle of resort 1 Euro each way.

Re:The cost of skiing

Davidsa2,
That's a totally unbelievably cheap ski holiday! Well done for finding it.

I am just about to book skis and boots and lessons for us in Courchevel. They are terribly expensive.

6 days of lessons, 4 hours per day, costs 280 euros. 'Blue' skis and boots cost 70 euros after 25% discount with Intersport, 'Black' skis and boots cost 132 euros after 25 % discount. Lift passes cost 190 euros for Courchevel and 232 euros for 3 valleys.

Ally

Re:The cost of skiing

Ian,
I forgot to say 'Happy Birthday' to little W.

I am trying to negotiate a discount price with ESF 1550 for our lessons. I want to have a go through the slalom gates in the morning in English, and then do touring ski-ing in French, for the same price the French pay for all day ski-ing.

And my daughter wants to do off piste in the early morning, followed by ski touring, for the same price as full morning ski-ing.

I will wait and see what they say. And I will have to try and hire some skis that can do slalom and ski touring.

Ally

Re:The cost of skiing

Ally I admire your efforts to widen your skiing perspectives by trying different disciplines. Ski tourers, are usually skiers with solid technique, and a good grasp of alpinism, spending their time almost entirely away from resorts and their infrastructure. Here's an outing that ise went on a while ago...

http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/6041.page

Will you be trying out this or, cross country skiing, which the French call Ski de fond?

If you want to ski slalom gates, also include a rental helmet with chinguard in your request. The proper gates are springloaded.
Re:The cost of skiing

Bandit,
I called it 'ski touring' because I thought that was the best description of it. I can see I have made a serious error! Sorry . What esf 1550 call it, is 'ski pleasure' which I thought was a bit of a ridiculous title, because surely all recreational ski-ing is for pleasure?

This is what they say:

http://www.ski-school-courchevel.co.uk/ski-school-courchevel/ski-adultes/coaching-courses

I realize the slalom may be a bit beyond me, but I would like to have a go. They say I can try it for a morning, and if it's too difficult for me I will do something else. I told them I was a bit old for it - 48 - because I thought they might put me with a bunch of super-fit 18 year old boys who would totally shame me.

I am aiming to be able to ski in and out of (through?) the gates carefully without falling over, and I don't intend to try and beat the world speed record on this.

I have read quite a bit about the 'intermediate plateau' that most people get stuck on, and I'd like to push myself past this. I have to admit I was quite pleased, in a smug kind of way, last week at Tignes, when our instructor tried to be polite and let a French lady down the icy red slope ahead of us, and she said 'La glace' and wouldn't leave the edge of the piste. And my daughter and I quite happily zoomed past her and on to the ice.

Thanks for the tip about the helmet. I hadn't thought of that.

And, back to the subject of this thread - the cost of our ski-ing holiday. The apartment is costing 1000 euros (about GBP943 at 1.06) for 3 people, and the train costs GBP300 each, I can't remember what the transfer bus is - around 20 euros each I think. Lift pass, ski and boot hire and full day lessons for me totals GBP462. So my personal total is about GBP1100. But I will have to pay for my daughter as well, so I will have to pay about GBP2200. Plus of course those little extras one forgets about until you look at the bank statement. The food I don't count, because I would be shopping and eating at home, even though it costs a bit more in mountain supermarkets.

I think, maybe, as others have said, it's better just to pay up and not think about it. I know I can afford it, it's not going to bankrupt me, so I'm not going to think about it any more.

I have been very good today - I have been shopping in Lidl, not Tesco, and if I keep doing that I will save quite a bit of money.

Congratulations everyone who managed to find a super cheap holiday. Unfortunately we have to go during Feb half-term, the most expensive week of the entire year.

Ally

Re:The cost of skiing

Ally, don't worry, the way disciplines are described varies from country to country. From reading the description on the ski school web page, I think you'll be staying on the piste, or close to it depending on conditions. It will be important to remember to top up both your lift tickets with Carre Neige cover on arrival.

Skiing gates can be good fun as long as you are happy to fall over, as you need to aim at the gate, and go round it. I was told that it teaches us to turn where we want to, and not where the mountain dictates.

Watch some slalom racing on TV before you go, you'll soon catch on. Nice sharp rec. slalom skis and a helmet (with chinguard hopefully) and you'll have a blast.

Re:The cost of skiing

Hi,

The costs do seem to go up, mainly due to the Carbon Con i think (but i could be wrong) and if the skier numbers are down the resorts and associated companies still want their profit margins.

I am lucky and fortunate that the accommadation costs are not a problem, but i have seen a upwards creep in all the other prices.I will be going out to BsM next week for some R & R ,and will see what the new lift passes will be,last season a 6 day pass was about 203euros/152.50euros Adult/Child respectively.....which 2 to 3 years ago with a decent exchange rate was ok ,but with the GBP and Euro one for one virtually this is the most crippling thing for families I imagine.

I think the way forward to keep prices down is to look for accommadation just outside the resorts ,and if possible somewhere that has a direct link, more often than not the Hotel/Apartment costs are slightly lower......also deciding whether to go fully catered/half board or self catering is more of an issue than it was before.

Once we are lumbered with the Euro things will only be more expensive i think as evryone cashes in by putting their prices up to catch people out.

I suppose in the end it will just mean a few more hours hunting around for the best deal at the time.

jon.

Have prices really gone up much? I'm not sure they have. It's the exchange rate that hurts.
When a euro cost 65p it wasn't so bad, now a euro costs almost GBP1.

A little. I have noticed a difference in where you ski for sure.
When the euros was 1.4 to the GBP, paying 4.5 euros for a beer was fine. However, at 1.05 its not quite such a good deal. Thats Sauze prices.

6 euros in St Anton generally, although we were paying 3.50 in happy hour which was ok at 1.20 to the GBP.

5 euros in Verbier, but the rate was 1.3 then so bearable.

Mayrhofen, 2.50-3.50 generally, and last time I was there it was 1.4, so it was great value.

I think prices vary so much according to where you are, so yes it costs us more than it used to, but if the rates were still the same, I dont think we'd be complaining.

I have noticed that the overall cost of package holidays appears to have gone up more than normal this season though. Its the lift pass thats going to hit me this time.

Thanks TC,
We are planning on keeping well away from cafes, and eating in our apartment. I think a lot of French shops shut at lunchtime. They seem to like 2 hour lunch breaks. But they open until quite late at night - the huit a huit supermarket chain seems to do what it says and stays open until 8 p.m. apart from lunch time. I will make sure I do my shopping ahead of time.

Ally

Just under the bridge towards Le Praz on the left hand side there is a cheap outdoor takeaway cafe that does an American (with Chips) for about 6 Euros - not bad in a resort where you can see Champagne on sale for 3000 Euros a bottle  The trick is in Courchevel is not to follow the ESF ski instructors with their clients - they take them to the most expensive places. Avoid anything that overlooks the airstrip - Cartier Diamonds on sale as you walk in is always a giveaway that a place may be a tad expensive....

Re:The cost of skiing

St Anton trip cost is GBP570, staying in a hotel, but, we have a GBP55 Edinburgh supplement hit. I have to admit, although I am lucky enough to live an a fabulous place, there can be issue with access to Europe, when going with T/Os. The Salzburg flight has completely gone.

Last year, we nearly got stuffed when all the New Year flights from Scotland filled up by Autumn. Our view is that when you want to go somewhere, bite the bullet. We could have gone to loads of cheaper places elsewhere, but the Arlberg beckons, it's one of the last big places remaining for me in Austria.

I think that is probably a reasonable price anyway.

I'm still working on it Tony!

I have had a couple of lucky breaks. One was the intro of the easyjet flight to Munich. The second was the split between BA and Natwest, who then created "your points". You can use them on various airlines, including easyjet, and use them to cover charges and taxes.

OK, there are reasons that I go back to Niederau, it is my second home, and I have more friends there than in our local village. In turn I have become part of their lives, and I get invited to the kids birthday parties, and nights out with the locals. However, thinking about people that like to go back to a favourite resort, say Ian and LgB, or anywherelse:

How can you work on the airmiles side of things, so as to get you to a nearby airport.
Determine the lowest transfer cost.
Get to know the village, and choose a B&B on the edge of town, close to a lift. I have stayed in dozens of houses, all within 70m of Tennladen lift, (and the Bichlwirt!)
Find out what the season pass cost is. Discount for over 60s. (Except for Ski Welt ~ over 80s!!)
Negotiate to leave a pair of skis in the B&B celler.

This would work for me in many resorts with access from Munich. It must work from other airports too
Yes, for the purposes of this comparison, it is getting to the resort, and the cost of staying there.

It is only when people start talking about "bargains" in France that I start counting day costs. Eating and drinking on the hill, very often takes the cost above a non-bargain in Austria and Switzerland.

Saalbach Hinterglemm in December: 7 nights accommodation, penthouse suite on 2 levels, 3 meals (incl. 5 course dinners), free soft drinks and fruit all day. Ski Pass for 6 days or health check and 3 hour long massages during the week. Spa hotel, indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, steam room etc. Art collection in hotel, including original Andy Warhol. Indoor parking (for what use it is to me).

20 quid over a grand per person. Not too bad for a very special and romantic holiday for two. Only problem is that the two has turned into one and the one has to pay for the two

On the flip side, at least I will get both the lift pass and the massages.

Ian,
I never thought Tino was 'that way inclined' or he'd have called his board 'Tom' instead of 'Tara'

Tino,
How inconsiderate of your friends to go away on their own holidays, just when you really needed them :D

Ally

Finn,
Well done. That was a great deal :D. I've just paid for our ski-ing lessons with my Visa card and I only got 1.075 euros to the pound, and the cheapest rate I can get in town for cash is from Thomsons and they were 1.065 on Friday.

Ally

I believe you don't pay commission on the euro TC when exchanging in resort.

Finn

Re:The cost of skiing

Finn,
I would be a bit worried about losing my money, if I used them. This is what the Investors Chronicle had to say about the company - Crown Holdings (London) Ltd in September.

http://www.investorschronicle.co.uk/Columnists/NoFreeLunch/article/20090909/0873f056-9d2e-11de-b65c-0015171400aa/When-segregation-is-good.jsp

Presumably one has to pay upfront for delivery later?

I had a nasty fright when the London Scottish bank went bust, as I had money with them, but fortunately we got it all back from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, including interest. However, I don't think the FSCS would cover this sort of transaction.

Ally

Re:The cost of skiing

See where your coming from Ally, once bitten and all that. Got to be honest I never gave any consideration to what would happen in the event of another banking crisis. I would say preordering your cash onto one of those post office style travellers debit cards would be the safest.

Finn

Re:The cost of skiing

Finn,
What I usually do is take about GBP100 in euros with me, and two different Visa debit cards (in case something goes wrong with one of them!). I have thought about using the post office card, but so far I never have.

I use my card in the shops etc. for large items and the cash if I'm buying something small like a hot chocolate. And if I need any more euros I get them out with the ATM. I don't know what other people have to pay, but with my card I think I only have to pay a GBP1 foreign transaction charge, and the currency exchange rates always seem to be a couple of percent better then the post office rates.

That company does offer very tempting exchange rates but I think I'd only worry about it if I used them. Thanks for telling us about it.

Ally
