Straight to the bakery for a croque monsiuer or sommat similar and then across to the funicular to get the first telecabine up to the top of the grande motte (if you are in tignes)
I LOVE that feeling - the excitement is immense. I will jump up and down on the bed, get dressed in record time and then head for brekkie. Don't bother to shower in the morning when I'm skiing, a) there's no point and b) it takes too long.

Re:Ok, its the first morning of your ski holiday....

I don't like the first morning much - there's too much anxiety.

What will the instructor be like?
Will I find where the lessons are?
Will I get chucked out of my group?
Will I get lost?
How do I get my daughter to eat her breakfast?
And, if I haven't already got my skis and boots - will I get them all fitted in time for the lessons?
Will my lift pass work?
Can I still ski, or have I forgotten?

Once I'm sorted, I'm okay and I can relax and enjoy myself. I had one instructor who upset me so much, once, I nearly didn't go to my lessons - only I thought what a waste of money and went anyway.

Nelly, no wonder I had to buy a new bed and mattress in our holiday cottage - you haven't been staying here incognito have you?

Ally

Re:Ok, its the first morning of your ski holiday....

It's even better if either you arrived in the dark the evening before or if it had been a low vis day, to take your first look out of the window to see blue skys and deep deep snow.
Then it's a case of making sure everything is at hand (hip flask loaded for instance), a hearty breakfast, then hit the slopes.

1st morning I'm usually still trying to find and assemble my clobber. Slow in the shower, slower eating brekkie, decide to try and get the lift after the 9am keenies, and before the 9.30 classes go up. End up at the lift at 9 regardless )

Open the balcony doors and stand outside in the cold with a cup of tea taking in the smell of the pure air and the snow.

Sorry don't mean to be a woose but I do beleive there is a particular mountain air smell and it always gets me excited about the day ahead.

Re:Ok, its the first morning of your ski holiday....

So, I open the curtains and see the sun is poking through and theres plenty of snow. The rush of excitement fills me top to bottom. I wake Mrs H up who never seems to get that excited about it all, and dive into the shower. No point sorting out my gear, as I would have done that on arrival the night before - always!
Get out of the shower, get dressed in sallos and fleece, and wander out to the balcony with a coffee/tea hopefully, spend ages admiring the views, telling everyone else who might be up by now what a fantastic view it is, how lucky we all are to be here, and what a fabulous day is in store for us. Maybe even take some early morning scenic photos.
Sit down for a good breakfast, plenty of hot drinks too, and then start to get ready. Normally its a case of slipping into the boots, making sure I have the right layers on, putting on a bit of sun cream (I love the smell of Piz Buin face cream, always makes me think of skiing), packing everything needed into the small rucksack including 2 bottles of water and 4 mars bars, camera, money, etc.
By now, I am usually bursting with adrenalin and probably starting to sweat what with being layered up, getting into my boots, and being indoors!
Time to head outside, and the cold crisp air is like an oxygen supply. Gloves on, hat on, hopefully sunnies on too, and a short walk to the lift to be there when it opens (depending on where we are and what time that is). I do like to be there for opening time. Onto the lift and up into the whiteness, and I get an immense feeling of pride, excitement and something else I have never quite been able to put a name to, but its something that makes me feel like a special and lucky person.
Off the lift at the top, assuming it to be a gondola, clip into the skis and really start to feel it now, and the sensation of pushing off with the sticks for what for a minute feels like the very first time and you ask yourself "can I still do this?" before sliding nicely down into the fresh cord and grinning like an idiot........

I'm afraid that my first morning quite often involves a hangover too due to over-excitement-celebrations, last holiday we were up on travel day for over 24 hours after being picked up at 2am to get to the airport . It does usually make the experience more surreal and it's even more attractive to get up those mountains 8). Peace...

Tony_H wrote:So, I open the curtains and see the sun is poking through and theres plenty of snow.

I was there then! All those feelings, I LOVE IT!

Am also slightly distured by the thought of Tino in a dress...

We only shower once a day, on ski-ing holidays. I shower in the morning (because I get up early) and my daughter showers after ski-ing when we come back in, because she doesn't like getting up early.

I hate showers, and once a day is quite enough, thank you. I think you should leave poor Nelly alone.

I nearly got knocked out by the smell in the ski locker room once, from a snow boarder's socks. In Lapland get up, bathroom, then ski jacket on top of PJs and boots, and gloves, go outside for first ciggie and cup of coffee, no smoking in log cabins.
Back inside disrobe back to PJ's have cooked breakfast and decide whether to ski, board or Xcountry.
Re:Ok, its the first morning of your ski holiday....

I wake up and the first thing I do is go to the window, I stare for a bit and then put coffee on. I stare out of the window again whilst rolling a ciggie and waiting for the coffee. I then make my coffee, put on my boots and ski jacket (over pj's) and then go out onto the balcony and take my time with my fag and my coffee, looking at the views, looking for snowflakes and looking at people as they go by.

Next I start making breakfast and wait for the sizzling of the bacon to wake everyone up.

After breakfast I have a wash (not shower, Sorry Ian, but I don't see the point before skiing either)and then enjoy putting on all my gear, especially if I have some new stuff.

Then it's back onto the balcony for second fag and coffee while everyone else gets ready.

After that I go inside clean my teeth and tidy up the mess made by my hubby who would have turned everthing upside down looking for a glove, or lip balm or something, there is always something.

Then out comes the piste map...discussion...route planned and off we go.

Excited and slightly nervous in the gondola, can I remember how to do it?

At the top, ski's on, oh god how do you do it? Here we go, nice snow plough (no one was watching they are all thinking the same)

A few minutes later...Yay, I'm doing it...and off we go...woo hoo!

I CAN'T BL**DY WAIT NOW!!!

For me it's get up, SHOWER, this part is key to actually waking up! Put some thermals on a sallo's and a jumper, go get some breakfast, usually of the hot variety, and fruit juice, don't like tea or coffee. Then stick all the rest of my gear, make sure my bags packed with camera, red bull/ water and choc, and head down to the hire shop, pick up my ski's, aim for around the first lift. No apprehension on the way up as i regularly ski mat's so i know i can still ski! :D

Ian,
I think you have to wash your socks as well as your feet.

And I hope Caron-a is okay, seeing as I'm meant to be playing Mum, according to Nellie, and her feelings haven't been hurt too much.

I don't suppose ski-ing with a hangover is any worse than ski-ing when very tired, or with a nasty cold, which I've done several times (I wouldn't know, since as everybody probably knows by now, I'm tea-total). I just ski slower, and more carefully, and for a shorter length of time, when I'm below par. But I wouldn't stay in bed - not after paying GBP1100 for 7 days ski-ing!

Ally

Re:Ok, its the first morning of your ski holiday....

One of my friend's kids got sunstroke when he was on holiday here with us. He had a very high temperature (checked it with a thermometer) and we were really worried. We nearly took him to Casualty. We put him in the bath with ice in it, gave him plenty of water, and salt, and a banana. Apparently it's not a simple case of overheating and lack of water, but also lack of salts, and bananas have lots of potassium. Dioralyte would have been a good idea, but I didn't have any. Flat coke is also supposed to be good.

Anyway, we monitored his temperature, and it went back down in a couple of hours, so we didn't have to take him to Casualty. And he was fine afterwards.

So, you could have tried lying in the snow on the balcony, Ian, and drinking flat coke. Maybe you'd have been back ski-ing by the next day.

Ally

Re:Ok, its the first morning of your ski holiday....

I quite often ski without a hat. If its a clear sunny day I hate to feel a hat on my head, making me sweat and itch. I can handle it when its cold enough to need one or dull (seems to make it seem colder) but when the sun is out I like to ski without a hat. I usually come back with a really brown face and head, being careful to avoid a goggle tan because as cool as some think they are, I think they look daft.
There is something nice about feeling the cold wind across your whole head as you ski along, as long as its not minus 15 or something.

Skidaddle's GF got sunstroke one day in Mayrhofen a couple of years back. She felt very wobbly and wasnt too good for a while.

Skidaddle usually misses one days skiing every trip due to a cold. Or at least thats what he calls it after a particularly heavy night on the ale )

Re:Ok, its the first morning of your ski holiday....
I don't wear a hat unless my ears start to freeze or its snowing, if it's a blue-sky day and the temps aren't too bad I'll be hat-less.

Talking of sunstroke/burn, I burnt my face one year and was told to put flour on it, so I did, looking a bit of a donut, then my brother comes along and tells me, in all seriousness that flour is combustible and my face might explode if it gets too hot.

And yes I did believe him for about 30 seconds until he started laughing at me running around the room trying to get the flour off.
