Cheap skiing in Austria

Hello

I'm planning a ski trip along with 7 or 8 of my friends this winter. We were planning on going from the 15th February and staying in Austria for 1 week.

There are a lot of ski offers in Austria, all very beautiful and appealing, but there is a small problem-we are students and we live 600 km from Austria. So, we need to ski on a budget.

My first question is: is there going to be enough snow in the mountains in that period of year?

My second question: do you know a place where we could go, stay and ski for a week for under 250 euro? We are looking for 6-7 day skipass and accommodation.

Thank you in advance!

Re:Cheap skiing in Austria

Welcome to J2ski :D The 15th of February is peak week in some European resorts, because of school holiday, so prices are at their highest. I think your budget is too low as Euro250 will get you a basic room for a week, and a lift ticket will almost certainly cost over Euro100.

Re:Cheap skiing in Austria

I may be wrong, but I would say it's very hard to find anywhere under a grand total of around GBP500 per person, for flights, insurance, transfers, accommodation, skis and boot hire, and ski passes, unless you either get a fantastic last minute offer, or go early in December. And lessons make it more expensive again.

I should think it's very unlikely you could get flights for less than GBP100 return, transfers and accommodation for less than GBP200 each, skis and boots cost around GBP100 (unless maybe beginners ones are cheaper), and lift passes between GBP100 and GBP200 each.

And you need money to spend when you're on holiday - it's amazing how it all adds up.

Most ski holidays go Saturday to Saturday, although some do Sunday to Sunday. Saturday half-term is 13th February for us, and prices practically double for it. The cheapest week is usually the beginning of January, after the New Year, which will be Saturday January 2nd 2010, because most of the kids go back to school on Monday 4th January.

Students from my daughter's Uni went ski-ing at Val Thorens in early December, because it was so cheap, but I don't know what the total cost was.

Best of luck with finding a ski holiday you can afford, and I hope you have a great time,

Ally

Re:Cheap skiing in Austria

Correction to the above,
I'm sorry I didn't read the original post very carefully. I have now re-read it.

Dani.dulfu - are you and your friends intending to drive from Baia Mare in Romania to a ski resort in Austria? If that's what you are planning on doing then you will be able to go to loads of Austrian resorts that we can't normally get to, because we normally fly to Austria from the U.K. and are limited to resorts with easy transfers from the airport or train station.

And, if you are driving, presumably you will be looking for resorts in the eastern half of Austria closer to Romania. I'm very sorry but I don't know enough about these resorts, other than what I can see on the internet, like for example the resort of Schladming is in the eastern part of Austria and has cheap apartments available on europe-mountains.com

And I suppose you will be bringing skis and boots with you in two cars, so as you said, all you need is accommodation and lift passes.

Sorry I can't help, but maybe someone else here can be more useful.

Ally

Tony,
Thanks for the hugs.

What about you? Haven't you driven in Austria to ski resorts?

I just feel very guilty about not being any help to these poor students, looking for a cheap ski holiday in Austria.

Ally

Re:Cheap skiing in Austria

I drove from Munich Airport to Niederau, Auffach and over to Mayrhofen. I dont know about driving from Romania, or where might be particularly cheap, but I do know I would avoid that week because it will be higher prices and much busier.

Admin - can we have a HUG smiley please?

Re:Cheap skiing in Austria

I agree - avoid that week - it's Valentines Day 14 Feb and everywhere seems to cash in on that.

The main expenses you can't avoid are the lift pass and skis/sticks - well, and eating and drinking as well I suppose. You can check out the lift pass and ski equipment prices on-line - there's a link on the front page of J2ski which is worth looking at - for easy access to a range of resorts - but remember that mayn't cover all the ski resorts you're interested in.

I have skied in Austria for several years and found it a great place - friendly people, lovely landscape/villages - definitely worth going if you can find something within your budget.

Re:Cheap skiing in Austria

You might have a look at Carinthia, it is south east austria on the border with Slovenia. I live in Romania and have been looking at booking a ski trip in Austria and the best prices from the tour operators I have seen are for that area. I don't know what the resorts are like personally, they look quite small, but the prices are considerably cheaper than Tirol or Salzburger when booking in Romania and there are some good offers I have seen which incude a basic lift pass within the price, even so you might have to up your budget a bit.
I am driving to Austria for my trip, if you plan to drive remember you need to factor in the price of the Hungarian and Austrian Motoway vignettes into your budget, approx 20 - 25 euro per car, last time I went I bought them both on the border north of Arad and payed in Lei, it means you don't have to stop over the border and buy one where there is usually a queue.
Good luck, I have a much longer drive for my trip as I have to get from Sibiu, last time it took me 6 hours to get to the border with Hungary, at least you don't have that problem
Re:Cheap skiing in Austria
I have a good tip for budget skiing in Austria in the town of Schladming

try the website www.hotels4u.com or www.medhotels.com (think they are part of the same company).

Anyway you will find a place called Alpine club that does self catering accomodation at very very good prices  If you want reassurance have a look on Trip advisors review page.

Admittedly, the hotel is up on a hill overlooking the town, and its hard work climbing back up, but there is a regular ski bus.

I have spent hours seaching the web for better deals.

It's true what others say though - you will end up paying extra on ski passes that time of year. Then theres the airport transfer, ski hire, etc etc. Sad fact but skiing is not as cheap as darts!!!!!
