J2 Skiers Go to Zermatt - Winter 2010/11

There has been a bit of interest in getting together as a group to actually go skiing :D

Zermatt is on quite a few "must go" lists for members, and also has confirmed fans here on the forum.
As a group, we will need to decide, the usual stuff, when, where, what type of accommodation, how long, and how much.

Hmmm Poll Q's have not turned out quite as I anticipated :roll: :lol:

8 man chairlift a go-go here in Zermatt, no wind, blue skies and an extra hour in bed which confused the hell out of me earlier.

I vote we all form a co-op and buy a chalet in Zermatt then we can all come and go as we please :)

Sounds like a great plan :D

How about this for an idea - firstly pick a week and a resort that suits the majority (Zermatt sounds great and you're never going to please everyone)….

Those that want to go with a T/O can group together and book a catered chalet or hotel for 7 days. Those that can only do a short break can arrange to be there for part of the week and meet up on the slopes. This would also give the flexibility for anyone who wants to arrange their own transport and accommodation to do so and it means everyone can cater to their own tastes and budgets. It also limits the logistics problems as it's up to the individual to get themselves there.

I guess there's no reason why everyone would have to stay in the same accommodation and arrive at exactly the same time - meet up on the slopes and for a beer afterwards…… :D

Tony is good at finding Chalet T.O deals

Tino is good at hunting out shorter duration stays, and liaising with hotels and the Tourist Office, and speaks some German.

Which month should we aim for folks?

I'd be open to all ideas (any excuse for an extra trip)....just that this season still seems far off never mind thinking about the next one!

I know what you mean....however it will take some time to get a consensus on each variable I reckon, herding cats comes to mind )
Then there is the small issue of funding a trip, plenty of time to save needed!

I think January or March. I like Lynns idea of the group booking for a week and anyone that wants to do otherwise can meet up in resort.

I'm not trashing your thread, just responding to you're herding cats comment :D

I have also contributed by giving you several other options for a destination, and have also stated that I only have "X" amount of holidays a year and in planning those holidays my family commitments must come first. I have also stated in previous threads Zermatt is not necessarily on my list of places that I must visit, but I would visit for a J2ski get together.
If you still feel that I have trashed your thread I apologise, I am also giving myself a jolly good spanking. :wink:

If you want to propose other destinations for a J2ski trip, you can start specific thread(s) to gather interest. To post your ideas for other destinations on this thread, will serve to cause confusion, and inevitably lead to the planning phase going away from the board and onto pm/email etc.

so what have i missed and where are we at?

Zermatt sounds excellent but if honest i dont really give a toss where we go as long as theres great skiing.

We will be going with a T/O and a catered chalet as Im lazy and theres always a good deal around and the more that would like to join us the better. As for people going by train, boat, car, sledge, scate board or any other transport Im sure accomadation wouldnt be a problem nearby.

Where do people usually fly from as were all over the place?

This is going to be fun and a night mare all rolled into 1 :mrgreen:

This has all gone a wee bit west, I'm in charge, we are going to Zermatt on a date I have not decided yet 8)

seriously peeps making a conversation out of it will split us like peas. Poll the top 5 resorts, after a specified time it is set. Then do the same with dates and finally follow Lynn's plan and let evryone sort themselves out.

Oi, I didnt start anything. It was the Germans. When they invaded Poland.

I did suggest Zermatt if anyone was ACTUALLY serious about heading for somewhere to have a get together, simply because its not somewhere I have been and I know a lot of other folk have mentioned how good it is/would be. I'd also go there in a catered chalet to keep costs down as low as poss, reckon you could do it for GBP500ish early Jan, but I dont want to be held responsible for starting anything or being any kind of spokesperson.

I think the following is a suggestion:

People should post the following:

1. Where they would like to go in a 1 2 3 order of priority
2. They should then post how many of them there would be ie just them or OH as well. Personally, I only go with the OH.
3. They should then suggest when would be good for them to go, or specifically when they might not be able to go.

Out of this we can either come up with a "take it or leave it" option, or we might end up with 2 or 3 groups of people wanting to go to various places, which means we could please more people.
That is of course providing people actually commit to going, because that, from experience, is where the problems start - someone does the donkey work and makes a booking and people start pulling out, especially when its people you dont even know!

My suggestion would be, once we have the following agreed, that people commit to a certain week or whatever in an agreed resort and go about finding their own holidays, as some like catered, some like apartments, some like hotels, and it also means that no one is tied in. It just means that those who are keen make their own holiday plans and those that ACTUALLY end up going have the meet up and can ski together and have a few J2 parties.

In the meantime, perhaps those who are genuinely interested could post their own 1 2 3 as above.

1st week in Jan is good, but any time except school holidays is fine. The cheaper the week, the better for me.

A little research has come up with the following suggestions for fully catered chalets including flights, transfers, catered board for 1 week travelling 2nd week in Jan (based on 2010 prices):

ZERMATT
Option A - Chalet Genepy, right in the centre of town by the church, 1 min to bars and shops, 10 min walk to lifts, holds 12 people, high quality chalet with enhanced food and wine, GBP639pp.
Option B - Chalet Kumanga, best views over in Zermatt, in the Winkelmatten area, ski back to within 200m of the chalet, holds 20 people, all ensuite, GBP504pp.

ST ANTON
Option A - Chalet Moos, ski in/out on the side of the Galzig mountain, 5 min walk into village, all ensuite, 12 people, GBP569pp.
Option B - Chalet Jank, 5 mins to Nasserein gondola, sauna and fitness suite, all ensuite, enhanced food, GBP669pp.
Option C - Chalet Helvetia, directly opposite Nasserein gondola, all ensuite, enhanced food, 16 people, GBP679pp

VAL D'ISERE
Option A - Chalet Ameila, doorstep skiing, in Le Fornet area, all ensuite, 12 or 20 people if fully booked out with 2nd chalet, GBP599pp.

There are of course hundreds of other options, but in terms of a few ideas in a couple of resorts which seem popular, this gives some food for thought. I know what you mean, some do look a bit rubbish (mine included, probably!) but you have to remember it's a safety item first and foremost. What I will say, is that you do very quickly get used to it and after a couple of days, no longer feel conscious of it. Also a lot more comfy than a hat - they don't itch!!

Snowplough, its a catered chalet in Villeneuve, price is for flights transfers and 6 nights catered board. I didnt know the prices had gone down, now I am annoyed!

Chalets usually are "fully board" Stewart....I think you mean fully booked!
For the record, Le Grand Aigle is the hotel (prison camp) I stopped at in March. Great location, terrible hotel. I would not recommend it as somewhere to stop.
Ok so snowplough needs to rethink.....

If its booked early enough, I have just booked with a good company 6 weeks ago for 6th feb 2010 chalet fully catered for 32 in Plagne 1800
for GBP250.00 p/p flights GBP80 p/p the same chalet was selling at the show last week for GBP550 p/p also offered the same chalet next door for any overspill at same price :lol:

Booking early makes a lot of sense, then people can make their own transport arrangements as we are better traveling from a northern airport but will go with the flow :roll:

By the way, certain chalets are doing FREE lift passes included if you travel early Jan for 2010, so they might roll out the same deal again next year. We got 2 for 1 in St Anton Jan 2009.

Tonyh is aware of this, but my GF won't be interested as she's a bit of a non-skier (GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!) so I will need to buddy up. If anyone else is in that boat, I'm very clean and don't snore much.

I have no wife to interfere with my snow habit. So that could be an option. My problem here is I don't need/want a package with flights and transfers etc, so may have to do independant accomodation and live on leftovers :(

Yeah I looked at the piste map and I think it is a goer. We have plans for several lessons on each holiday this year so I think that we can will be in shape for Zermatt. I want to go to Austria and I have already started looking at some other places (Obergurgl is one I am very keen on).
Zermatt looks ok and there is plenty on offer for all skiers.

Assuming that the 'under 28' rule is waived and I can convince OH that it's a good idea to go on a ski trip with a bunch of people we've never met before, then Zermatt in January 2011 sounds like a great plan. :thumbup: It would be great to finally meet everyone and put names to faces. :D Both the chalets look good, though I think I prefer the slightly more expensive one given a choice (Chalet Genepy). We'd also be fine with a hotel if that suited people better and would happily go with any of the other resorts mentioned if that was the consensus.

Dates wise, with this much notice we can do anytime throughout the season. Flights, ideally from Newcastle but Leeds Bradford, Sheffield or Manchester are easily do-able. Are the flights included in the price from London or is there the option to specify (within reason) when you book?

Yes, fully expected to. Prem vs lower reaches of Championship. Centre half and main striker both unavailable through injury, right back goes off injured after 15 mins, keeper sent off after 40 mins, but we were 2-2 after 57mins so not a bad effort at all. Chasing an equaliser at 3-2 down we gave 1 away on the break and then the ref gives the worst handball decision you will ever see. Not unhappy with the effort, so no I am not grumpy at all.

Probably worth contacting them and asking - would have thought at very least they'd be interested in giving you an option/first refusal for the 2011 season. I've just confirmed my Xmas trip prices for 2010 and they were delighted to get intesrest so far out.

If the entire chalet was booked for 2nd Week in January 2011, it would be approx 600pp (incl flights and transfers etc).
This was the indicative prices given by Zermatt Chalets this morning.
It has a discount of around 90 per person applied based on this Jan 10 prices.
They also said that it is highly likely that they will be offering a lift pass deal in April 10 for Jan 11 bookings, either BOGOF or free lift passes (current lift pass for Zermatt and Cervinia Area is 247gbp).

However they did state that the Chalet accomodates only 12 people.

I just thought that I would call a company to see what they would consider offering.

I guess it depends on whether everyone that has expressed an interest actually decides to go, and if so, maybe we could book the chalet for 12 and another one for 8 - there seems to be a lot more choice of chalets for 6-8 people than for larger groups.

How about Chalet Manuela (GBP499 sleeps 6-8) or if there were enough people that didn't mind spending a bit more, Chalet Angelina (GBP739 sleeps 8 and has a private sauna.) Both on the same website as Chalet Kamanga above, have private facilities, and include flights and transfers.

Zermatt has always been top of my list.

Pretty much exactly the response I expect :lol:

However, the chalet we have booked in Arabba in January will involve sharing with a group of people we've never met, so not that much difference really. If this year's experience is a good one (we've never done a chalet holiday before) then I think I have a very good chance of getting a 'yes'. If it's a disaster I may have more of a problem and have to convince OH to book a hotel in Zermatt that week instead :D

It's not like J2skiers are all axe wielding madmen, or anything (I hope.........) :mrgreen:

That's one of the most sensible posts I think I've read from you :wink: Very much agree with you on the whole thing, we will be in more of a position to commit in the New Year but definately interested.

I told Mr Nelly the other day and he started sweating like David Beckham in a maths test.

Would it be an idea to maybe have a 'meeting' at the end of the winter (somewhere Central) for those still interested so we can meet each other, get OHs involved and make a definate decision? Get all the info together now, get a list of definates and sort something out in the New Year?

Here is what I propose, like most people we probably have holidays booked already for 2010 (I have 2 with 1 still to pay).
We cannot book them until late March / beg April 2010 for 2011 Season.

So far we have a list of people who are prepared to join the "Takeover 2011 Tour" (my new name for it)

Tony H and Mrs H
Stewart and OH
Ellistine and Mrs Ellistine
Mfc and OH
Snowb4ndit and Scalpula
Dalerobers, OH + son
Rustyinn and OH (possibly + 2 more)

A few others who are possibles and making their own way there.

What I propose to do is this: -

E-mail a few companies who have chalets in Zermatt that could either take the above amount of people in 1 chalet or 2 adjoining Chalets.
Get some estimations from them for Jan 2011 (8th Jan Departure)
Discuss potential offers i.e. discount for whole chalet occupancy, BOGOF Lift Passes or Free Lift Passes.

What I would need to know from everyone: -

City you live (to choose a suitable airport in the middle or request specifics for people)
For the children who are included in the above list would you require triple rooms (need to make sure the chalet has these)

Pay the deposit at the end of march 10 / beginning of April if I can find something suitable.

What do you reckon?

I was looking at Cervina last night seeing as the lift pass covers this area and Zermatt.

Forget all the previous conditions stated for attendance on this trip, I am now running this show so you will listen to me. :wink:

So far, I have had some replies which is good and we are up to 8 people interested which is a positive start.

I was reading about Zermatt last night in the WTSS book (from about 2003 I might add), apparently a 'must-ski' before you die. Only thing putting me off at the moment, and please correct me if this has changed, is the hike/bus to the lifts. I would rather walk 15 mins to a lift than wait an hour for a bus, apparently its about 20 mins max from anywhere in the village to the main lifts?

I would like to go on a ski holiday with everyone, but I can't do 2nd week in January 2011 because my younger daughter will probably be doing her January A2 exams then, and I can't just ditch her and leave her to cope with exams on her own.

However, I will be free for 2012 holidays because she will by then (hopefully) be at Uni and organizing her own ski holidays. But I will be 50 by then, and too old for the 'rules'. However I will also be on my own, because my husband doesn't ski, so I will need to share with another female.

It will be interesting to see if this 2010/2011 holiday actually takes place, and how it goes. Best of luck with it,

Its been my reason to avoid Zermatt for the past 3 seasons. However, reports suggest such good skiing and views that i think the time has come. Especially if it can be done on a budget. Grin and bear it sort of thing.

We are organising a package holiday from the UK although several people are booking seperately for the same time.

Preferred Airport Departure (if UK)

The more the better in my opinion as we will get a better deal.

Regarding the details, I have contacted several travel companies and they will not have any price information until Dec / Jan.

They have said that prices will not be available until early december 09.

An update regarding this potential holiday to Zermatt.
Flight out LGW 9th Jan 0755.

500 per person, catered chalet Kamanga (which got mixed reviews).
This will cater for a party of 20 (currently I have had over 30 people express and interest).
I am awaiting further information from the TO as I have specifically as for Lift Pass Deals to be included (either BOGOF or included in the price for such a large group booking).
I have also asked if there are any other chalets located near to each other to accomodate a few more peeps.
This is the first response I have had back with a cost so I will expect a few more in the coming days.

What is people initial reaction to the price?
If I look on Crystal Ski for 2011 it is around 700 HB

Not a bad price, but need some lift pass deals thrown in for such a large group IMO.
Crystal are notoriously expensive for brochure/website prices; I wouldn't use them as a comparison personally.
For example, Chalet Annie GBP678pp 8th Jan 2011 LGW - no thanks, you'll find much better deals than that.

I'm not going (because I'm too busy) but I had a look, out of curiosity, at Ski Total's prices.

9th Jan 2011 - chalet Kamanga, Zermatt, 3 star plus GBP569 from Gatwick, with some extras, like 2 for 1 ski and boot hire, free 1 hr ski lesson on Monday, a couple of free places for groups depending on group size, and I'm not sure but I also think they do 3 days of ski hosting as well.

I will probably be able to manage 2012, if anyone's planning that far ahead :D

sorry, but we have to pull out of the 2010 2011 trip as OH has to be in Dubai that week for a conference. We will now be going to Oberlech from 22nd Jan instead.

Thats a good price, il see if i can get a good deal off cyrstal ski holidays. I get massive group discounts with them(and free ski holidays for myself) so i may be able to make some sort of deal.

Just found self catered appartments for the week in Zermatt for 322 euro or 273 pounds and it can fit us all in the one building. If you want to see pictures of the apparment you can check it at...
