Getting unofficial ski lessons in Austria

Hi,

When I get a ski instruction from an official ski school, the school takes a big percentage of the fee that I pay and the instructor gets a small percentage of this money...

Is there any way I could order ski lessons from instructors directly? This way, the profit is mine and the ski instructor.

How can I reach the instructors directly? I plan on going next to Schladming, Austria.

Most qualified instructors would not enter intothis kind of transaction, they would have too much to lose.

I have had private lessons from ski teachers who are contracted to ski schools for set hours and days. Quite often the teachers will choose to work on what amounts to their day off. These were highly qualified and experienced teachers. Of course it may be different in Austria, where I've seen a woman straight from my ski school class issued with a ski school jacket, and set to work teaching beginners, with no ski teaching qualification whatsoever. Kirchberg BTW.

There are lots of ski teachers who prefer to work privately, and outside of set weekly classes. Try an enquiry to the Tourist Office.

Well, you two contradict each other :)

I was wondering, maybe I could meet those instructors online... Aren't ski instructors using any sites to offer their work privately?

Or... Could I find a forum where Austrian ski instructors hang out and try to reach them there?

What do you think?

You should still go through the school. They have all the insurance and make sure the instructors are vetted and qualified. Its easier for everyone. Many of the schools in Austria offer discounted 1-1 tuition if you don't mind getting up the mountain for 8am.

For sure there will be a lot of variation in practice, even between local ski schools. My favourite school is quite clear about it's ruling, but turns a blind eye to a recently retired instructor, who is a lovely guy. All the full time instructors are statliche geprufe.

And, like Bandit, I have seen too many horrors "teaching".

Insurance is an issue, if there is an accident, with some instructor culpability, would the ski school insurance cover an instructor working in a private capacity?

You could check out http://www.snowgurus.com/ They specialise in France but have some instructors listed in Austria.
