Ski socks

I was in a TK Maxx today and saw a group of people, looked like a family, buying up bundles of tube socks for skiing. They were falling over themselves about how cheap they were for "good proper skiing socks".
On inspection, I discovered that all they had bought were general tube socks, and having discovered myself the MASSIVE difference it makes to have "proper" ski socks, I wondered how many people do this and end up with sore feet, blisters, etc.

I bet a lot of first timers of less experienced skiers do it.
I can honestly say its well worth spending a bit more and having at least 3 pairs of good properly supported and padded ski socks, which you ought to be able to wear twice on a weeks skiing.

Anyone particularly recommend any specific makes or models?

salomon. swear by them, no seams on the toes and slightly thinner material around the heel

I take one pair of socks for the week and that does me but I am looking for a new pair and no I don't wear tubes 8)

Falke, Bridgedale, Smartwool are the 3 brands I've had best results with :D

I've tried a few different brands, but find that different models are better.
Head, Salomon (tend to shrink a lot when washed), K2, Nordica - all seemed ok as long as you get the ones with shin, ankle and top of foot padding.

Yeh, 15-20 is the right mark, could probably get away with a pair for the week too ;)

I have some pairs of varying thicknesses depending on how cold it is/how my feet are feeling in my boots. For some reason I have an extra single sock and can't locate the other one :(

I do have Nordica, GBP5, but most days I just wear ordinary Wilson sports socks, 4 for a fiver. My boots are so comfortable, they feel like ordinary shoes.

I wear Salomon WW Idol performance socks and never had any problams with sore feet, I have a few pairs...no smelly feet for me. :D

Just wash your feet properly and you will not have smelly feet or socks 8)

I agree, but I like fesh socks when they have just been washed and fit all snug, if you know what I mean.

I had a boyfriend once who showered and changed socks every day, he still had smelly feet! We did't last long.

You won't go far wrong with any company whose core business is making ski socks. One would hope that any boot manufacturer that puts its brand on socks will insist on a quality product too. I swear by Falke socks, haven't used anything else for years, but there are quite a few good brands about.

I've had Salomon and been disappointed cos they shrunk a lot.

Falke are really good, but my faves are Smartwool.

Aren't they bloomin' pricey though, when you think about it?

The socks I really don't like, are the one that have a great variation in thickness. A little thicker on the shin and heel is ok, but some are extreme, with a very thin tube over the instep. I find it difficult to put boots on with these socks, without creating some ridges,or folds somewhere.

Just had a rummage through my collection, and I have a pair of Falke socks which happen to be my favourite pair for comfort. I always feel like I ski better in these socks.
I always take 6 pairs though, 1 for each day. Its just wrong to wear a pair again IMO.

I agree ...I like my Nordica ones best but I have never had any trouble with Salomon though

This thread had me pondering my sock habits all day, so I headed into town to double my sock quota to 2. Not only have I not managed, I ended up buying a soft shell jacket. Doh!

There is nothing wrong with waring one pair for the week as long as you have washed them from the previous year, to prove the point I am willing
to post a used 6 day sock to any one on J2ski to inspect on my return 8)

Unfortunately I suffer from smelly feet. If I wore my ski socks for six days, they would either disintegrate or fly back home on their own.
I read an article about bamboo ski socks and thought they would be better for me. I have managed to get some ordinary bamboo socks, they are lovely so soft and keep my feet so fresh. I will def be getting bamboo ski socks now.

Erm, I might pass on that one fella.

I only take 1 pair usually and wash em in the shower every time I have one, plan goes a wee bit tits up when you don't get in from apres ski till 5am mind.

There are a couple of points about washing your socks (and thermals) on ski trips. Altitude and elevation combine to make for very low humidity. This means that if you do wash thermals and ski socks, they should easily dry overnight (provided they are made of good wicking materials).
This is good, if you are starting to dry out like a prune, with the combination of alpine air, and forced air heating, as the drying clothes will raise the humidity in your room. Of course, this is where you find out if the anti smell (anti-microbial) treatment the manufacturer claims, actually works.

I've tried all the main brands. Used to prefer Salomon but now I absolutely swear by X Socks. Brilliant! Have used them for the last few seasons and now wouldn't ever consider buying another brand. Various versions, but the bog standard Ski Light is perfect. Not a lot of places sell them, but they are easy source online or you usually come across them shopping around in ski resorts. Just type "X Socks ski" in to Google.

As to the duration - I tend think two pairs for one week, three for 10 days, four for two weeks.
