I was having my usual poke around on the intraweb net thingy bob and came across this .....global warming melting glaciers....humbug i say, roll on the ski season :thumbup:

Hi,

Gore keeps rattling on about some glaciers that might be shrinking...but he never tells anyone about the ones around the world that are actually increasing in volume...funny that.

Heres to a long ,cold ,dark snowy winter.....with some lovely sunny days around the first two weeks in April :D :D

No, but he should and so should Obama since Gore is the ONLY reason why he got it. But this isn't the place for politics. I was worried about the whole warming thing. Thinking after 30-40 years I wouldn't be able to ski anymore, or worse yet raise a family on the snow.

No one EVER mentions that the glaciers on the southern hemisphere (correct me if I'm wrong). It's a ploy for the government. The world if getting warmer, but isn't it coming out of an ice age?

I'll also hope for a bitterly nasty cold winter. More days at work

If you poke around the "intraweb thing bob" long enough, you'll find all sorts of science research and studies, taken out of context, or cherry picked for contradictions. Look for the preponderance of science, not the cranky sites promoting a few exceptions as QED.

Glacier's retreat every summer, they're supposed to. Fresh snow in the winter builds them up again. Less snow means they're growing less in the winter than they shrink in the summer. In Val Thorens they have been putting a massive condom on Glacier du Peclet in the summer to stop it shrinking.

Every year we all fly around the world to persue our passion and we have to accept that we're contributing to the loss of our playgrounds.

If only the snowdome in Tamworth wasn't so unbelievably crap!

Precipitation is as great a factor in glacier formation as temperature. Climate change may bring more snow to some places, even if average temps are rising. So some glaciers will advance, despite global warming. The glaciers in the Alps don't seem to benefiting.

A Prius is a superb car.
Environmentally friendly depends on where you drive.
For school runs it is super.
Motorways, well you may aswell buy a 5.0l engine with 400bhp and super duper turbocharger.

They do have one massive advantage, you dont give fat boy Brown much tax money.

Stewart, what happens to the batteries in the Prius when they wear out, how will they be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way?

Our household drove one for 3 days, we hated the car, it handled like a horse and cart, the engine started up when you turned the key, it was uncomfortable and the petrol consumption was pants. With pleasure we handed it back to the dealer.

Very funny rant about the Prius and it's green credentials here, no idea if it's true, but those nasty batteries are still fitted...

Bandit, you are very correct in what you say.
Well I have the answer, the batteries are sent to Landfill.

However, they are designed to last for 10 years. The logic behind this from Toyota was that in 10 years time they will have a solution to reusing the batteries.
When did you drive a Prius?
The reason I ask is that the models from 2005 and the new 2009 version handle a lot better.

As I did say the only real benefit to having one is the tax you pay Mr Brown. I have a company car and when I order a new one in a couple of weeks it will be a Prius. Why you ask? Am I mad?
Nearly but a company car tax is 62 per month in tax for a Prius or a Honda Insight (Hybrid). I could have an Audi A5 which would cost me 279 per month in tax.
12 months of saving that amount of money in tax pays for my two skiing holidays in 2010.
Not quite so mad afterall :) :)

Stew, my Audi A3 1.9tdi emits 119gm2 which puts it in the low 13% bracket. Ok, I have spec'd it up a bit so am paying a bit more, but I am still paying under GBP100 a month in tax for both the car and fuel. And its a ****ing lot nicer than a Prius to drive and to look at!!

I will have to check again then Tony as the number i got from HRMC was a lot higher than that.
I think for an A3 it was around 207 per month.

Anyway, I just in case you are right, I have just grabbed my car form back from HR and will do some checking.

Just checked again and yes it is around 100 for Company Car Tax but the I have to add in Private Fuel which is an additional 150. So total is around 250 pcm tax against the Prius or other Hybrids of 62.

Bandit, I didnt experience the same as you but I do know where your coming from.

I am going to give one a go as they only last me 18mths so will see what happens.

Prius or not to Prius......not i think

It maybe a good car but by the time the bits have been made in one country ,all the gubbings for the battery are sourced in china and shipped to canada for processing (by the way i hear that the damage caused by the emissions from processing the batteries is destroying the surrounding wildlife habitat, and thn its all bolted together and shipped around the world

.....not so eco friendly, infact those excellent motoring journalists on topgear did an experiment and it's not as economical as they claim it is.

Errrrr......no it isnt. Go to the Inland Revenue site and put in the details for car and fuel and it comes in at around GBP800 for the year that you pay, ie GBP75 a month roughly.

My son is a motoring editor, and he brought a VW development engineer over to ours. Electric vehicles were discussed, and he reckoned the big issue in the trade was safety, no back seats, thats where the batteries are, chinese batteries.

The issue was a fear of the batteries exploding.

Electric car batteries use the same techystuff as laptops. That was a Sony/chino design/manufacturing problem, but that is also the source of the fear in the developers.

Drill some holes in the back of the drivers seat. When it goes BANG, you will go quite quickly. :wink:
