Random thoughts ... (can you tell I'm bored?!)

Doubt it's just me but I have this ability to conjur up thoughts of skiing merely from the sodden after effects of being rained on (or as the proper terminology would have me say, 'soaked through') and so therefore any sweaty/damp clothing immediately takes me back to the 'glorious' smells of ski rooms full of damp, sweaty, musty ski clothing and equipment, but the question is what other smells cause people to immediately jump back to thier ski heaven, is it the jagermeister or something totally more obscure ...

... and following on with some randomness have been playing this very childlike (and some may say sad!) game when driving along and looking at the suffix of car registration plates and trying to figure out appropriate ski resorts, in the past day we've had WNG (Wengen) and VDS (Val D'Isere) ... will go back into my little northern hole now :D

Oh dear, you do need to get out on the slopes don't you ) You made me think of all the sounds you only hear when skiing, such as the chair lifts or the squeaking sound of someone walking in ski boots.

Re:Random thoughts ... (can you tell I'm bored?!)

Not sure about smells, but every time I hear Katie Perry's 'Hot and Cold' it takes me back to our favourite mountain restaurant in Sauze - they played it pretty much continuously when we were there last year. As jastem says, squeaky shoes on snow (doesn't even have to be ski boots) also immediately turn my mind to skiing.

I was watching an old episode of The Hotel Inspector, set in the Portes du Soleil the other night and was positively drooling over the lovely snowy pistes in the background. I've also taken to watching episodes of High Altitude and Ski Sunday that I've taped over the past couple of years and reading numerous brochures/ski websites and checking webcams at every available opportunity (usually when I've got other, more important things I'm supposed to be doing!)

Do they have a skiaholics anonymous? I think I have a problem……..

87 days (and counting) 'till Arabba :D
I love that smell you get in a "working" ski shop, with the wax and everything filtering through and can conjur it up if I try hard enough.

Re:Random thoughts ... (can you tell I'm bored?!)

I have this illness too, dont feel alone.
Every day I come on this and another website just to talk about skiing, and see what other people are saying. Every day I look through at least one ski holiday brochure or the EB/SnR catalogues. Every day I reach out for my WTSS and re-read a chapter on a certain resort which I have read at least 5 times before. Every Friday night I talk about skiing with my wife, best mate or other friends over a beer. Every day I look longingly at my skis, which are standing up in my office behind my desk where I sit. I sometimes find myself driving on roads that wind and slope down, making me think how they would look with snow cover on them and with skis on my feet.
Every night I shut my eyes at bed time and I can see myself sliding nicely down a perfect white piste with a blue sky and the sun shining. It is indeed an illness.

Smells dont make me think of skiing. I have only once really used a boot room, and I found it so cold and stinky that I prefer not to think about it. The only noises that make me think of skiing are ones you find only on mountains - ski lifts buzzing away, the clanking of the cogs as you go over a pylon, and the complete crisp silence of a sunny morning in the Alps, or the gentle whisper of snowflakes hitting the ground.

I tend to look at photos I have taken of places I have been to really take me away. The sort of photos that make you feel like you are right there. Such as these:

It seems to me that its photos with lifts in that "take me there". I believe there is only 1 cure for this illness, and that is to get yourself out up into the snow covered mountains, clip into your bindings, grab a pole in each hand, and find yourself grinning insanely as you start to slide downhill.......

The smell of red bull, which unfortunately also revolts me, reminds me of many a drunken night in several watering holes in Austria. Mixed with red vodka and given the name 'flugerl' (spelling?).

Takes me straight back.

And smelly cheese = sweaty boot rooms.

 :DHi,

The smell of freezing cold , crisp air and diesel.....reminds me of a week in Chamonx when I had the mother of all sore throats ...

....or again standing outside on a crisp clear evening with a wood fire in the area....transports me back to BsM, if I stand outside my back door at home on a cold clear night also and look up at the stars.....i can imagine the same stars but i'm looking out over my veranda up at Les Arcs and La Rosiere.

The smell of melted cheese......just reminds me to change my socks..... :( :(

jon.

Re:Random thoughts ... (can you tell I'm bored?!)

Tony mentioned 'the gentle whisper of snowflakes hitting the ground'.
Reminds me of 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy evening' by Robert Frost.

' He gives his harness bells a shake,to a ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep of easy wind and downy flake'

One of my favourite passages and I think it is wonderfully evocative.

It usually passes through my mind in some silent back country, just waiting to drop in........ Ahh I'm there!!!!!!!!!! :D

(Well, that or Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden!!!!!!!)
