Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

Ok, just wondering who watched it and what they thought of it.

I am going to guess that certain people refused to because of their prejudice against Ryanair, or others will say O'Leary is this and that just because they have in their own minds an idea that his business is evil.

For what its worth, I struggled to find quite what point Panorama were trying to make with this programme. It started off with the usual dissing Ryanair for people missing flights when the online check in started, extra costs when booking flights, highish priced on board refreshments, and complaints from the odd member of staff about being targeted for sales and pilots having to plan flights in their own time.

It then went on to complete the picture by covering the facts that Ryanair is now officially the worlds largest airline in terms of passenger numbers, that it has one of the best safety and punctuality records in the business, fewer lost bags than any of its rivals, and that they still offer the cheapest fares in Europe.

The BBC reporter then went and got himself into a right mess when trying to interview Mr O'leary, who wanted an unedited and uncut interview to be shown or he would not be prepared to give one, as he did not want BBC clipping it to suit their own personal agenda. I believe he has a point, which he made nicely when he said Ryanair fly more people than watch the BBC, and that meant they were more popular than the BBC and that the BBC wanted to run their agenda of hidden costs all the time because maybe the BBC are not quite so popular with the public. Again, I think he has a point.

He also rightly pointed out the facts, which some people always seem to overlook; which are that no one is forced to fly with Ryanair, no one can book a seat without knowing what their overall cost is, all extra charges are explained on the website and are not secretly added in (like them or not), and that the T&Cs which EVERYONE has to agree to before proceeding clearly state that you need to check in online and bring the printout or face a stiff charge at the airport. Whilst we may not agree with being charged GBP5 for printing out our own boarding pass on our own printer in our own ink, we all do it and no one forces us to.

Likewise with baggage, we know what the restrictions are, yet the people who complain are the ones who abuse the restrictions and try to pull a fast one by not adhering to the rules.

Like him or hate him for whatever reason, you have to admire O'Leary. He is an astute business man, who drives a hard bargain, and provides a simple and efficient service to millions of people who want/need it. It is not a quality product, that you know when you book, hence the low costs. I personally don't like the fact they charge heavily for ski carriage, but I dont use them for ski holidays, so its not a problem for me. Anyway, O'Leary is a clever bloke, and I respect him for that. He bought a brand new fleet of 200 Boeing 737'a just after 9/11 when other airlines were pulling out of orders so he got a fantastic deal, although the details were not made public. He also annoyed Airbus by not placing the order with them and playing them off against Boeing, but thats what buyers do with suppliers, they find the best deal and use one against the other to get the best deal. He then stripped everything out of the planes, not to make the less comfortable but to make them lighter so that they were more economical. He is not stupid. Airbus wont do business with him until he offers more money per aircraft, but he is not going to pay what they want, and therefore they will not sell a single unit to him, whereas if they lowered their price they would do a multi billion euro deal with the worlds biggest airline, and get one over on their major rivals. They too are running a business, but they dont have the same philosophy. Thats up to them.

Anyway, in summary, I take my hat off to Mr O'Leary. I agree with him that no one is forced to fly with Ryanair, but millions do, and keep coming back time and time again. Its not a quality product, but its reliable and cheap, fact. There are no hidden costs, just extra costs which people dont like having to cough up for.
I actually thought the way he dealt with the BBC reporter was spot on and the poor old reporter didnt know how to take him at all. Lots of "erm, ummm, hmmm" going on!

Oh, and if you go to bbc.co.uk/panorama they claim to show the whole live interview uncut. Guess what - there is a break 3/4 of the way through, which they refer to as "changing the tape".

I know who I trust more.

Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

Nice summary Tony, I refused to watch it on the basis of being a fan of O'Leary and his no-nonsense approach. As Ryanair rightly state no one is pressured into flying with them, people are aware of all charges before they book and they are provided with the T and C's under which they book. Think am right in saying the only thing that O'Leary says keeps him awake at night is the safety aspect, and obviously that's a main priority as the business would suffer massively if they were to have a catastrophic accident. Ryanair have actually published their correspondence with the Beeb over the offer of unedited interviews etc http://www.ryanair.com/site/news/releases/2009/docs/Panorama%20Correspond.pdf and it's worth a read if anyone has time - seems to show how upfront Ryanair appear to be whilst they accuse the Beeb of planning a hatchet job ...

Tony,
Great summary. Glad you typed it, must've taken ages!

I did watch it, I found it interesting and it's true no one is forced to fly with them.

You've summed up how we felt about the programme.

Some of the costs do appear a bit sneaky, but when it comes to paying there's nothing actually hidden.

I'd fly with them, but I'd know what I was getting. Cheap, no frills. (Any hopefully my luggage at the right place/right time)

I have in fact been with them skiing, for a short break. We had no issues whatsoever.
Wouldn't fly any of the budget airlines for a weeks skiing. I'd drive or package tour.

I think most of you have failed to see exactly what O'Learys real genius is.

Stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap......to start with
Raise you're prices to a level just below the competition
Make the pricing ambiguous to cause contraversy
Have you're most costly expense paid for by your detractors

Marketing is King in the service sector, Ryanair don't pay a penny.

Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

Sorry Tony, your no doubt well written entry was too daunting for me. However, I have just watched the programme on iplayer and thought it was a very badly presented one-sided non story. Which is pretty typical of the BBC I hasten to add.

I had no real opinion of Ryanair prior to the programme - in my opinion they are what they are and people have the benefit of personal choice.

Having watched the programme, the reporter Vivian White came across as some kind of Crusader without a Cross, desperately trying to shock with facts already in the public domain. Bit of a tw*t actually.

Ryanair I felt were portrayed as a shrewdly run business in a highly competitive market place, and if that was Panorama's aim, then they succeeded.

O'Leary must love the free marketing provided by the BBC.

No doubt O'Leary is a very shrewd businessman and has built up a very successful airline.

However, I believe he is very much in danger of shooting his golden egg laying goose by adding compulsory extras rather than increasing the base price. He is peeing off a large number of travellers with some of these:

eg Making the only free way to pay a card which almost no one holds and is frankly useless for anything else
Charging for home printed boarding passes - you can't board without one, so sorry Mr O'L, it's not an extra and you're probably in breach of trading standard type rules. Charge more for an airport issued one, maybe, but not the alternative
His luggage policy is a rip off - not allowing people to pool their allowance is purely a revenue raising measure and only likely to up the number of bags people carry.
His floating of the idea to charge to use the toilet is another example.

Having been ripped off a Girona airport on the luggage front, and subsequent refusal to provide refreshment when stuck onboard for 2 hours on the ground, I would try to avoid flying with his airline ever again.

I used to respect him, I don't now.

Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

I don't think the Ryanair experience is all that great but I would not cut my nose off to spite my face by saying I'll NEVER (an awfully long time!) fly with them.

They're not always cheaper but they do fly to destinations that others don't. I can think of Biarritz, Santander, Treviso and Perpignan as places I've been with Ryanair that were not served by other airlines.

I've been with EasyJet, BMI Baby, Go (gone!) and Buzz (buzzed off!) as well as FlyBe; if they're going to the place I want to got to at the right price, I'll fly with them.

Now Aeroflot....don't get me started on Aeroflot )

Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

Great till you get to the airport and find that the flight time they advertise and you have booked for (and says on your confirmation) isn't actually the slot they have, it's about 25 mins earlier so therefore check-in is closed when you arrive well within the 40 minutes before the ADVERTISED & CONFIRMED time of flight.

Yet this is my problem and they can't help - despite misleading me. I got my money back after a long fight but they won't get near a penny again.

Easyjet on the other hand, I screwed up - I went to the wrong airport (Luton instead of Stanstead) for a flight to Glasgow. They put me on standby, got me on the flight as there was a no show and din't take a penny of me when I'd happily have paid any price as it was ME that had screwed up.

That's my personal experience anyway.
Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

When we were back home in UK for a vacation a couple of years ago, my wife decided to go to Poland. Ryan Air was very slightly cheaper than other airlines, so she went with them. I can see that if you are getting a great price for a flight, a totally crappy experience might be expected, but when you are paying full whack, it is not acceptable. Ryan Air should have a "before you buy" warning, so people who don't know how they operate, won't be traumatised by their experience.

Trencher

Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

People can say they're not cheap but being a regular visitor with the family to Ireland to stay with the in-laws this half term (if something hadn't come up in the meantime) we could have flown Liverpool to Dublin return afternoon of Sat 24th, back afternoon of Sat 31st (so good flight times not early morning or late evening) for GBP50 for ALL 5 of us, everything included - how? Well was GBP5 per sector each, no taxes (not sure how Ryanair actually do this, do they cover this cost themselves?), hand luggage only, free online check in and paid with by Halifax's Easycash Visa Electron card (as we go to Ireland so often was worth 5 minutes doing an online application for this even if the card only gets used for flights with Ryanair!) So how anyone can say that GBP50 for 5 return flights isn't cheap is beyond me!

Sounds to me more like you didnt adhere to the luggage policy, same as Wickers. They dont just randomly charge extra for nothing, they charge of you exceed your 15 kilo allowance. Simple rule is dont exceed it. Its not a rip off, its a condition of flying with them. Many other airlines do not allow you to pool luggage allowances so dont blame it on O'Leary.

I think a lot of people have also missed the issue regarding the Visa Electron Card. I dont have one, but did you know that if you wanted to get one, you can get a RYANAIR Visa Electron? See where hes going with that one....?

Show me an airline that automatically provides you with refreshments on board for being delayed 2 hours? I sat on the runway in Santorini for that period of time in the summer, not with Ryanair I hasten to add, and the pilot very kindly explained to us that they were unable to provide anything because of some EU law. They did however provide everyone with a free drink once they had taken off. However, this was BMI who charge a lot more for their flights and who have a higher standard of service. Ryanair cabin crew are monitored for sales performance as this makes up part of their salary. No one forces them to work for Ryanair, before anyone carries on about how bad their pay is. Actually, their pilots are paid above industry rate.
If part of their pay is made up from selling refreshmsnts, they arent going to give it away, are they? Especially when most of the delays these days are NOT the fault of the airline, and usually hinge around ATC problems, weather, or stupid passengers who forget to board on time.

He may well be peeing off a number of passengers, but they still fly more passengers than any airline in the world, and have increased by 15% this past year.

I am not for one minute saying Ryanair is the best thing since sliced bread, but as Tino rightly points out, the man has got a business model and it works very very well. People need to open their eyes a little more and stop expecting everyone to do them a favour.

Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

Tony, I may have fallen foul of their T&Cs regarding the luggage, but as MO'L has claimed he wants to reduce the number of bags processed,as they effectively pay the handlers by the bag, this T&C is in there purely to raise revenue.

I don't expect a favour, but I don't expect unfair T&Cs either!

Ryanair is in all fairness pretty good if you don't have young family, don't need a bag in the hold, have a Electron card and have a mobile printer. At certain times there are also some very good deals to be done.

Not so good if you don't meet all the above criteria, and often once bitten, twice shy.

Well done Mick! Ryanair has enabled me to ski three time a year plus many other trips, booking well in advance and only with carry on bags keeps cost down about e60-85. The beeb provided priceless advertising for Ryanair! Last week
Mick was checking passangers onto the Dublin Gatwick flight and making announcements on the PA, there are very few CEOs who actually work with in the trenches.

Re:Panorama last night - The Ryanair Effect

I think it comes down to balance.
I can understand that if you book in advance you can get a cheaper flight and that if you dont want to take lots of luggage then you can save money and i have done this myself on a short break. The company save money on baggage handling and get the plane turned round quicker so everbody wins.

However I feel that where the company started out well they have become victims of there own success and are pushing the concept to extrems whilst loosing sight of the fact that its still people they are dealing with.

I find the whole process of booking a flight very stressfull and feel like im treated like an idiot.
Whilst on my last flight we were forced to que like cattle in a meter wide barrier coridor that snaked round the departure lounge whilst on either side there was lots of space with seats only open to priority booking.
There were numerous staff hovering around (probably left over from the unused check in desks) trying to sell you priority boarding. It was as if they were deliberatrly trying to make you uncomfortable soyou would give in and buy the priority booking just to get some space and a seat. Unacceptable behaviour. Once on the plane there were far too many bags for the overhead lockers and we had to store them under the seats which im sure in an accident would not have been safe. Rather treat me like an Adult tell me the full price and then let me decline services if i want to save money.

Here is a clasic example of why they are not a low cost airline anymore.
I have just tried to book for a weeks skiing in Feb so 4 and half months in advance. Flight out GBP0.00 flight back GBP16.99 with taxes around GBP60 sounds ok but as im going skiing i need to take bags suddenly that GBP60 becomes GBP170.

BA for the same dates and an Airport nearer to where i want to go GBP128.

BA took half the time to look up and book better flight times and a lot less stress all round.
I am entering this at probably the wrong time, having not really contributed yet but I have a question that I hope wont make Wickers blow his top completely!!

Im looking at flights to Bergamo in Dec for my season and Ryanair are the best option (unfortunatly) as am looking at GBP35 for the flight, GBP40 for skis and inc all other **** probably about GBP100.
My question is because I may be taking 3 pairs of skis do we think they will be THAT anal at the desk with my ski carriage? I have read that it is GBP20 per kg-yes that is right, GBP20 per KG!!!! It is 20kg limit for sports equipment i think.
Have got the Head Monster ski bag so hoping they wont weigh it-esp that early in season-I have never had skis weighed but also never flown with Ryanair when skiing.

Any thoughts?

The way i have always viewed Ryanair is thus:
They are a cheap airline for getting to certain places I want to go. I tend to use them for trips away which do not involve skiing, and as such my preference would be to use BA on a DIY trip, before they brought in their ski carriage prices.
However, I notmally travel with a TO for a ski trip, and therefore the issue of Ryanair for a ski trip is not particularly relevant for me.
In terms of what they offer for a break to a city or beach destination, they do the job. They get me there efficiently and cheaply. If the price is above a certain level, I simply dont go. I am happy to go somewhere where their prices are cheap at that time and not be too fussy about where it is, or not bother. I dont know how many other people look at trips away like that?
However, if I were given a destination to go to, and the carriers were Ryanair, BA and Easyjet and I had to make a choice, my choice would depend on price mainly. If the prices were not too far apart, BA would get my vote every time, followed by Easyjet, with Ryanair in last place.
They do a job, if you know what I mean.

What I still find bizarre is people who have a prejudice against them because they didnt adhere to the rules when flying with them and ended up out of pocket. As I said before, you cant book without having had to agree to their T&Cs. BBC keep trying to show MOL up for so called hidden charges. They are not hidden, they are clear as day.

I cant respect people choosing not to use them because they feel cheated. But sometimes you have to accept that by trying to bend the rules, you sometimes get caught out.
