Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

Hi all, just getting into the way of thinking about the ski season again! :D
A group of us are flying to Munich for a weekend at the end of December-we will arrive early on the Saturday morning, leaving again on the Tuesday.
Can anyone suggest good skiing close to Munich? I see that Garmish is close but don't know much about it-a member of the group has suggested Mayrhofen but I am concerned that it is a lttle too far as I would hope to be on the snow by lunchtime on the Saturday (flight lands at 10 am).
We are all fairly accomplished skiers so need something reasonably challenging but don't need big miles for such a short break-does anyone think Seefeld would be a good option?
Any advice would be appreciated,
cheers.

Re:Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

A good train service runs from the airport via Munich Hauptbahnhof out to Kufstein and Worgl; for the skiwelt eg Soll, Scheffau Westendorf; and then on down the Inn Valley. Airport to resort can be 2.5 hours, certainly much better than Mayerhofen and with a good area and snow record. Go to http://www.bahn.de/db_uk/view/index.shtml for good info.
Alan

Re:Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

We haven't decided yet if we should get a transfer or hire cars. I was thinking that if we were within an hour of the airport we might get a transfer. If we do end up going to somewhere like Mayrhofen then we'll probably rent some cars.
Mayerhofen is a nice enough place but it is the guaranteed snow of the glacier down the road which appeals.
Is there anywhere decent with a good snow record but which os closer than Mayr?
The train sounds good Alan, but I hope to be on the slopes in less than 2 1/2 hours-late December, short ski day!

What time do you fly in?
Train Info
Kitzbuhel is 2.5 to 3.0 hrs
Hopfgarten is about 2h 20m, lets you into the skiwelt
Worgl is 2 hrs, add 20 min transfer into Niederau, Oberau, Auffach
Worgl is about 2h15m, then 20min transfer to Alpbach.

If hiring cars, add an hour for the paperwork and car pick up.
Worgl by car is just under 2 hours.

Cheers Dave, we arrive at about 10 am-I am told that Mayrhofen is about 2.5 hrs as well. Some of the guys know Mayrhofen well and just want to go somewhere familiar, I'm trying to get somewhere that will allow us a half day skiing the day we arrive.
Of course we need there to be snow for that to take place )

Dude, just get a car. The train that runs to Innsbruck is great as well.
I've done train, plane and car. Car is by far the best. You can get a cheap (for you) taxi from the Airport to the Bahnhof.
Good luck have a safe trip, can you snap a few pic's while your out? Give a poor American something to drool over  ?
Re:Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

Ian, I asked Ricky the time of arrival, and 10.00am saturday morning is primetime. If the queue is short it will be 15min. Add 10 min for the transaction, 12/13 min for the terminal walk, (it takes longer to queue for a taxi, and transfer, and then walk to through to the relevant desk, Ice Ghost!) Then you walk through to the lift, change floors, and find the car, 10 min. Load up and find the exit. Total 56 minutes.

I am not saying that this is not a reasonable choice. The really big issue is that while the Autobahn from the airport will be a steady flow, on a Saturday morning, in January, the E52 round Munich will be very busy, and have a number of standstills enroute. The E52 onwards to Rosenheim should be a bit clearer, but is still steady at peaktimes. So a 2.5 hour journey might be a 3 hour.

The train is always on time, and is therefore, predictable.

You can manage the situation in a group, by sending the first two people to get their gear off the conveyor through to the station/car hire desk. Use your mobiles to check everyone else is through, prior to getting tickets.

Re:Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

Last year we flew into Grenoble with the dreaded RYANAIR at half term from Prestwick (flights were incredibly cheap and we had lent our driving friends our roof box for free ski carriage!!) All the flights from UK landed within a few minutes of each other and we had to queue for an hour and a half to get our car - nightmare. The combination of Ryanair and Grenoble airport is not a good one - no boots or helmets in hand luggage, you have to wear all your clothes to keep within the 15kg baggage limit, smallest car hire unit ever at an airport and only one desk for the cheapest car hire company.......

To back up Dave Mac driving from Innsbruck to N last year we saw the traffic (on the other side of the AB) from Germany. If the public transport links are good I would use them OP.

Ice Ghost, Lufthansa is a main carrier, and is not a budget carrier. You might pay anything from GBP100, (rarely), to GBP450, ie business rate fares. My ski buddy had just taken up a Lufthansa offer from Manchester to Munich for GBP150. I expect to pay under GBP60 for a return flight Edinburgh to Munich.

Ian, I meant to add to the Ice Ghost response, that flight services in the UK, vary so much, depending on your location, and where you wish to go. The question relates to Munich Airport, and you seem to indicate that this is not an airport that you use.
I am fortunate to have a great service from Edinburgh to Munich, but it does mean a flight arrival time of early afternoon. I like that, getting to the Bichlwirt early evening for a Zipfer.

OTOH, your attitude does you great credit.

On the point of an hour to collect a hire car, this is what I allow in all main airports, it is the practical time to allow, from baggage collection to driving off. That is the typical Heathrow time. Smaller or provincial airports are different.

Also, Munich is the quickest airport for luggage retrieval from landing time that I have experienced.

I agree with the 1 hour landing-depart time. If you want to avoid all this parlava try PUBLIC transport.
I'm aware that there are bus conexions to Austrian resorts and from Kitzbuhel`s balconies you can waive to the german bundespolizei.
Train links with the S8/S1 to hautbanhof or ostbanhof are handy.
Last year I went from Standsted to Solden using the train and bus. You can by the tickets even for the Italian Sudtirol resorts from the very Munchen airport.

Re:Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

Munich Airport is very efficient. My luggage arrived within 5 mins of reaching the carousel. It was a 5 min walk to the car hire desk, and then 5 mins from there to collect the car from the multi storey, straight out onto the motorway which runs from the airport. We were on the road within half an hour of leaving the plane.
The road round Munuch does get very busy at weekends, as Dave said. It took us 2.45 hours to get to Niederau, although next time I would take the extra 40 mins and drive on to mayrhofen )

Re:Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

Thanks for all the replys guys, but the main question is really which resort we should go to-which resorts are easily reached by public transport? Or if we hire cars, which snowsure resorts should be the quickest to reach?
Has anyone experience of travelling from Munich to Seefeld-and is the skiing snowsure and good there?
Garmisch seems to be the closest with high skiing, would it suit a group, especially if we used publuc transport?

Re:Advice please-weekend trip to Munich!

Nowhere around the Munich area is particularly high, although Mayrhofens slopes are higher up and as a result are about as snow sure as you will find. Plus the drive is motorway all the way except the last 20 mins.
Cant comment on the skiwelt but reports from people I know who have been there are always positive. Not sure Garmisch would offer you too much skiing for a week with only 48km.

You can get a train to Jenbach and then take a bus or another smaller train up the Ziller valley.

Train to Worgl, one hour.

Will be at Innsbruck in Jan, but on a T/O flight.

No probs with car hire time at Innsbruck, everything there is 5 minutes, give or take the hire queue. It's the major airports like Munchen, Schipol, Chicago. I was amazed at Tony's Munich time, transferring from Terminal 1 to 2 in 5 minutes. And no hire queue! He's a lucky guy!

Where are you headed for in March Ian, that starts at Innsbruck? It couldn't be, no, it couldn't be......

Sorry to disappoint Dave but no I'm not ..... Livigno, it's the quickest route via Landeck and the Inn valley into Switzerland and then through the Munt la schera tunnel and into Livigno 8)

Well its hardly several miles, is it? You walk down the escalator, a few hundred metres on the lower floor, and round the corner past the shops and hey presto, there are the car hire desks. I literally turned up, got the keys and walked into the multi storey within minutes. No queueing anywhere. I dont think it was luck. I put it down to having a good sense of direction, the airport being eficient and well signposted, and it being late morning on Boxing Day. The journey did go downhill a short while after that, round about the time I passed the fantastic new Bayern Arena, where there were several delays on the motorways, but only because there were road works.
I particularly liked the variable speed limit on the Inn Valley motorway in Austria which is varied depending on the amount of pollution generated, ie the busier it gets, the more pollution there is, the slower the speed limit.
Oh, and big cars with winter tyres on steel wheels. Remember that one????

Dave, I think you need to change your travelling times into MUN, walk faster, open your eyes, and stop chatting so much on the way and you might make it out a lot quicker )

Wow, this really is ski chatter-I haven't learn't much about resorts near Munich for a weekend, but I have learn't a lot about collecting hire cars and luggage at various airports )
Thanks for all the info guys.....I think

So, if no-one knows of a snowsure resort within an hour of Munich, can anyone tell me roughly how long it takes to drive to Mayrhofen?
As I said at the start, we arrive around 10am and I would ideally have been on the snow for about 1pm as we only have a couple of days.

An afternoon pass wont allow you on the slopes at 1pm, not sure exactly when, I think it may be 3 or something. However, the drive to M from Munich should take around 3 hours door to door. Its an easy drive and may take you less, but dont expect to be on the slopes for 1pm if you go there. However, do expect to be able to get up the Penkenbahn at 8.15am the next mornings and beat all the others up to the slopes and be the first to ski the courderoy on many slopes.

If you decide on Mayrhofen and want any tips on places to go or runs to do, drop me or Skidaddle a PM.

I'd rather take you on at skiing than walking T. :-)

Two other posters have agreed with the one hour, so I think you have one heck of a short cut organised!

Regardless of that, there is only a half hour difference between your one off boxing day experience, and my 20+ experiences. My main contention is the predicatability. The OP wants to get from plane to resort in 3 hours. That would be the Wildshoenau or the Schiwelt, either by train, with Hopfgarten maybe shading it.

If going by car, Soell, or Ellmau, both drivable in 2.5 hrs.

I agree with you Tony, if an extra 15 minutes gets you to a good location. The point about Hopgarten is that you can get onto the Gondola from the car park, or the rail station.

Re the snow sure aspect, all of Germany, almost all of Austria and Italy and most of France, are skiing on man-made snow in December. This may well be supplemented by natural, well and good. If it is a crap year, (ie too warm to make snow), you will be drinking beer in Munich for the weekend.

I think you are generalising far too much, old mucker. I dont do waiting for transfer buses, and if they arent in the morning then you can either ski half a day or find a nice little bar to sit in.

It is actually possible to find good standard accommodation with a TO. Especially in Austria, but you wouldnt understand that
Its also possible to self drive and end up in cheap/poor accommodation mate, as I am sure you are aware.

Better food? People who go self catering or B&B choose where they eat. I have been half board before and had some excellent meals, and some bad ones too. However the last 2 catered chalet trips I did, the food was as good as any I have had before in many a restaurant.

I know your little spot in France doesnt have tour ops going, and therefore there arent many English about. For me, thats not a problem. I quite like being able to share the experience of the last slope with the random person next to me on the chairlift, which gets you funny looks in many places where they dont speak the lingo. I once ended up chatting to a lovely couple on a long lift in Montgenevre, and it turned out my mum had taught their son at school, so a bit of socialising is all good.

Anyway, each to their own, buddy. 8)

No your right you do save money, but I have no waiting about for transfer coaches, possible a better standard of accommodation, certainly better food and I get to go to places that not a lot of English
TO's go to and that must be worth the extra dosh 8)

In a way I guess I'm quite lucky as we go the January week to LGb with my Bruv-in-Law and his family so we can go for a more up market chalet as the costs are split between two families but staying with family does have it's draw backs from time to time.
We hit the LGb year after year not because I'm passionately in love with the place although it is my kind of place but it is a great place for the kids to learn to ski and as I have said before this may be the last year, Little W will have completed her 3rd star and has developed into a competent skier so it will be off to pastures new in 2011 and that may mean a trip to the lowlands of Austria.
We have had this conversation many times but I to love the last run of the day I used to be able to ski it on my own in the twilight in the peace of the mountains, not any more,it started off Little W " can I come Dad " now it has ended up with three kids in tow. I might complain a bit but I take great enjoyment skiing with the kids, I still have a couple of years before the little rascals leave me for dead but it's a coming, anyway gotta get back to my plumbing job replacing the outside waste pipes, speak soon.

Right then, that's that sorted!
So, where did we think there was skiing to be had within an hour or two from Munich?
Just a reminder, we arrive at 10 in the morning and only have a couple of days,so are looking to hit the slopes as quickly as possible from the airport!

Would Kitz and Schef. be a shorter journey than Mayrhofen?
Schef sounds good as it is a good spot to get into the grossraum and has a good snow record compared to other villages on the circuit.

Not sure. It took 3 hours by coach from Mayrhofen to Munich airport the one time I did it. 2 and 1/4 hours to Niederau, and 45 mins from N to M so driving to M wouldnt take too long I guess, around 2.5 hours maybe.
