Favourite current tv programmes

Whats everyone watching right now?

For me its Deadliest Catch. I am amazed how tough these guys are, and how something as "simple" as fishing, or so I thought, is such a whole concuction of possibilities and variables.

I have also been watching the Ian Wright programme on sky where he has been coaching some prison inmates down in Weymouth. (I havent seen Ellistine on it yet though....), and also:

World War 2 The Apocalypse on Nat Geo channel on Tuesday nights, with some fascinating filming in colour from 60 odd years ago. I never studied history after 3rd year seniors, and somethings I just wasnt aware of, like the British attack on the French navy in Algeria in 1940 to prevent them joining the Germans to access Britain by sea.
I expect to learn a hell of a lot more by the end of the series, very interesting stuff.

Please dont anyone say Strictly Come Dancing.....

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Currently on Series Link we have - Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men (New Series 23rd Sep) and Waking the Dead.

Agree Tony, something as 'simple' as crab fishing can be totally absorbing. Wife is so into it I had to get her a Cornelia Marie mug for Christmas last year. Cost me more for the post than the mug cost!

Spiral 2 on BBC4 has took the sting out of The Wire ending.

I've taped the Munro programme, do you recommend it Mr Wickers?

I also have Red Riding on the box. I was gutted to have missed it first time. Thanks Ch4 for the repeat!

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

I never seem to find the time to watch anything live so am several months behind on programmes I've taped. Just finished watching 'On Thin Ice' with James Cracknell and Ben Fogle which I really enjoyed. Next on the list are Waking the Dead, New Tricks and several other thing's I've probably forgotten about.
Looking forward to getting a V+ box so I can tape more than one thing at once as you can guarantee that if there are several things I want to watch on a particular day, they will all be on at the same time.
A romantic story is weaved through nearly all the major events and people of the war, giving a great appreciation of the war's scope and complexity. There are some historical notes in the books, but you you don't need to read them for the story.
I lost 3 great-uncles in WW1. One at Gallipoli, one somewhere in France, and one became a permanent invalid with shell-shock.

If you like reading something slightly bulkier - how about Tolstoy's War and Peace? I have a copy here if anyone wants to read it, plus de Gaulle's war memoirs and several other war-like historical books.

I have read the book 'All quiet on the Western Front' several times, plus seen the film, and it's all quite appalling. I have always been a pacifist.

Ian, I pay a yearly subscription to Ancestry, to help me with my historical/family research, so if you want me to find out something for you, just ask.

Ally

Ian,
That's why I suggested Ancestry. Depending on whether he had a 'common' surname or not, you can search without a Christian name through the births register on the internet. The more information you have the better - like approx year of birth, country and county of birth. You could also search their death register, and match it with the war graves records. It might take a while, but I'm sure you could find it.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Ian,
I forgot to say, if you don't know where your mystery great-uncle was born, you could buy the birth certificate (around GBP8 from the office of national statistics on-line) of the great-uncle you do know about and hope they were born in the same place. And if you can't find him on-line you could either go and look at the actual baptism parish registers for wherever it is, or pay someone else to go and look.

I have done a great deal of family history research myself and there is usually another way of getting around these things.

Ally

Does anyone 'get' the bit at the end of I Robot? It was on last night.

I've watched it about 5 times, plus read lots of Asimov when I was a teen, and it still doesn't make sense to me. I simply don't understand how anyone can 'lead' all those NS5 robots to a new life, because they don't have the extra whatsit processor that 'Sunny' does, nor are they 'big' enough like 'Vikki' so I don't see how they can become self-aware.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Well,
Actually Tony, the film 'I Robot' is based on Asimov's books and he was a great physicist and miles ahead of everyone else with his work on robotics. And, it is a real worry that robotic devices might become 'self-aware' and start doing their own thing. It is not fantasy. If humans give all the control and power to robots 'Judgement Day' could become reality.

As I understand it, the whole point of neural networks is that they actually learn, like the human brain, which is after all, simply like an extremely sophisticated computer running on biological electrical circuits.

Are there no robot geeks who also ski, who can answer my question?

Ally

I am really shocked at you all

You definitely need to see this film. It stars Will Smith, so it's amusing and entertaining, and it has lots of exciting fast moving thrilly bits when you think Will Smith is going to die (only he doesn't of course because he's the hero and it's one of those happy ending sort of movies). And it makes you think a bit about robots.

It came out in 2004, so you have all had plenty of time to see it. And it's even on telly now.

Ally

Eljay,
I don't listen to the radio, or read the national papers, and I never watch the news on telly, so I do miss out on quite a bit. But I do like living in my cave.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Dave Mac,
Are you still living in one of those underground caves? I've got one of the newer sort, built on top of the ground, with walls about 2 1/2 feet thick and these things you can see through called windows, which are really great because they bring a lot of light into the cave. Unfortunately though, the roof isn't very thick and a lot of heat from the fire escapes through it. So I'm trying to do something about it.

I fixed the door problem, by having 2 doors. It's quite ingenious really, because you only open one door at a time so the wind doesn't whistle into the cave. And there's room to stand in between the 2 doors in the dry, while you put your welly boots on.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Rose,
Maybe your poor blind neighbour should get a new guide dog - that one has obviously got it in for him.

I remember years ago, when I was a student at Aber, watching a blind man trying to cross the promenade with his guide dog, from a distance. The blind man couldn't understand why the dog wouldn't take him across, and he was getting quite cross with the dog. What he couldn't see, and the dog and I could, was that there'd been some road works in the middle of the road and there was a great unfenced hole in front of him. So I rushed over to him and explained the situation and then of course he petted the dog and was really pleased with him, because he'd saved him from falling in a hole and possibly hurting himself.

Caron-a what's the DM ski and snowboard mag? I don't think we get that in my cave.

Nelly - have you got one of those new-fangled bubble caves to accommodate your head? And do you have a special hat to keep your head warm in the winter, you must lose a lot of heat through a head that size?

Ally

Except that He works out in a cabin in his garden at 7am with his radio blasting out. I never get a lie in 'cos its so loud My thoughts were very unkind about him, along the lines he must be deaf as well as blind. But I did go and pick him up.

Ian,
I only like films, books, and serials with happy endings. I like it when the baddy gets caught, and the injured get rescued etc. hence I like NCIS, Casualty, Numbers etc.

My flat mate when I was at Uni tricked me into going to see 'Sophie's Choice' and I was traumatized for life. I can still see Meryl Streep on the station platform trying to decide which one of her kids to give up to the Nazis before she goes off to the concentration camp. And that bit at the end when she commits suicide - although I haven't seen the film for 27 years.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Sorry Nelly,
I didn't mean to spoil it for you. 'Sophie's choice' is actually a fantastic film, if you can deal with the traumatic aspects of it. I'm the other way around to you, I only see films, or read books, if I already know the ending - to make sure it's a happy ending.

I went to see 'Mamma Mia' because it had Meryl Streep in it, and I found it embarassingly bad, although I realize I'm in the minority here. I would never have believed they'd be able to persuade all those super-famous actors and actresses to take part in such a rubbishy film. And they nicked the plot from an old film that I've seen (which I thought was much better).

Ian, I will check out that film of yours, to see if it's 'happy' enough for me to watch. I can't deal with anything like lions eating zebras, people's boyfriends running off with someone else, or 'goodies' dying.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Trencher,
Are you sure we're talking about the same film? (Sorry everyone) but the Mamma Mia I went to see was all about trying to find out who the girl's father actually was (plus a lot of very silly singing and dancing) so he could be there at her wedding.

The old film I saw had nothing to do with Greeks or stoning. It was about an Italian girl who was an illegitimate 'war baby' and her mother didn't know which of 3 American servicemen was the father, and the mother'd been claiming money off all 3 of them (without telling the other 2, if you see what I mean).

And, unfortunately for the mother, the Americans decided to go back for a reunion and of course all the potential fathers thought 'great' they'd be able to finally meet their daughter. And there were some very amusing scenes where she had to get one father out the way to greet the other one, etc. etc. And it all had a very happy ending (although you still didn't get to find out which one was the father, because of course it was way before the days of DNA testing).

But I can't remember the name of the film. All I can say is that it is about a million times better than 'Mamma Mia' (in my not so humble opinion).

Ally
Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Ian,
That's rather difficult to do - list my top 10 films. Maybe I could just list the ones that I can remember that I liked. I'm a very disorganized person, and I haven't really ever thought about it much.

'Father of the Bride' 1 and 2
'3 men and a baby' and ditto and 'a little lady'
All the Bourne films (4?)
The Bruce Willis film with the gold and the riddles and the others in the set.
'The day after Tomorrow'
'Riddle of the Sands' (beautiful scenery and I like anything to do with sailing)
'The lord of the Rings' (I've read all the books loads of times)
'Gone with the Wind' (okay I know it has a sad ending and it makes me cry every time, but I still like it, and I've read the book about 10 times).

I'm sure there's lots more I've forgotten but that should give you an idea.

As I said, I know I'm in the minority as regards my opinion of 'Mamma Mia'.

Ally

Caron-a,
I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't stand Mamma mia, and I will keep well away from that lookalike you mentioned. As I said, they stole the plot for the film, and borrowed all the music, and then presumably paid a huge amount for some very famous actors and actresses to make idiots of themselves (like embarassingly bad singing), and the final result was simply appalling.

Ally

 AllyG wrote:Ian,
That's rather difficult to do - list my top 10 films.

Ally

No Ian,
I have a penchant for films where goodies beat baddies, which often do have some violence in them. But I never watch wrestling, or boxing, or those plotless violent films. And very occasionally I like comedy (with a happy ending), as in 'Father of the Bride'.

What about you then, which sort of films do you like?

Ally

Nelly,
I know it was very sad for all the people who died, but the heroes survived, and it seemed as though mankind was going to cope, in spite of the ice age, so it had a happy ending really.

And maybe it will encourage more people to think about caring for the planet. I went to a talk once, given by James Lovelock, and he signed my copy of 'Homage to Gaia'. He is a man who was well ahead of his time, thinking of the planet and global warming.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Brucie,
One of the reasons I like these sort of films is because it's easy to differentiate between 'goodies' and 'baddies', and feel satisfied and happy that the 'goodies' have won (again).

Unfortunately real life isn't like that. People are a mixture of good and bad, and one can't just shoot out all the bad bits so that everyone lives happily ever after.

In fact, quite often, even in my own mind, I can't tell what's good and what's bad, let alone shoot out the bad bits. Some things I definitely know would be bad things to do - like murdering anyone, but is, for example, smacking my own kid a bad thing to do?

So, I don't like programs like 'Spooks' because it's too difficult to work out who the 'goodies' and 'baddies' are.

Although, I admit, in 'Lord of the Rings' for example, one never really knows if Gollum, or Boromir, are 'goodies' or 'baddies'.

Ally

Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Col has very kindly informed me, the name of the old film I was looking for, is 'Buona sera Mrs Campbell' 1968 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buona_Sera,_Mrs._Campbell

Even Wikipedia agrees that they pinched the plot of this film for Mamma Mia. And according to them it won 2 golden globe awards, for best actress and for best original song. It also won the Writer's guild of America Award for best written American original screenplay.

So that's one mystery solved. Thank you Col. I'm still waiting for someone to explain the meaning of the end of 'I Robot' to me. This is a great website.

Ally
Re:Favourite current tv programmes

Ally,

This is in danger of being a very interesting moral discussion.
Do you notice that older movies have starker goodie/baddie divides whereas modern movies have far greyer areas where one has to take a conscious stance on moral dilemmas, taboo subjects and the like?

Is this because society is becoming more complicated and the movies reflect this, or was society simpler when we had simply the good and bad, and ignored the ugly!!

A brilliant turning point for me was 'Blazing Saddles' , which took a simple goodie/baddie movie( a Western) and confronted so many taboo subjects, and moral dilemmas that it almost confined the Western type movie to the dustbin of history!!!( And it was funny!!!!)

In fact, as an interesting aside, I was recently skiing in North America when Blazing Saddles came on the telly. Now, for me. the whole point of the movie was to illustrate how ignorant and bigoted the white townsfolk were, accentuated by their use of the word 'Nigger'. The word was blanked out in the version I watched, !!!

Does this show a legitimate societal change , or have they totally missed the point? Discuss.

Brucie,
I will think about this, while I'm cleaning, and get back to you.

But, as you said, it is an interesting point for discussion - related perhaps to the old empire days? My grandparents were really proud of the British Empire, and honestly believed that the British did a great job educating and controlling the ignorant 'natives'. My own great-grandfather was a medical missionary. 'We' were always in the right, and 'they' were always in the wrong. Nowadays colonialism is almost a rude word in itself, and none of us can be so sure that we are always right - a 'goody'.

Ally

Private Bryan,
I wouldn't be too sure about that. Sometimes the more people insist they're right, and the more 'noise' they make about it, the less they believe it themselves. Only, of course, they're not going to admit it, because I think everyone hates to 'lose face'.

Ally
