I think that Hermann Maier's BMI would be in the obesity range, like many rugby players. So yes fat people can ski.

A friend of mine was told that he would not be able to have an operation as he was so big because of his BMI. They later changed their mind as hes a body builder and muscle weighs more than fat so this BMI bussiness can sometimes be quite wrong. Most rugby players are very big but thats muscle popping out all over the place.

 :oops:I split my salopettes in april they, they felt rather snug but thought hey i've already had them for about 16yrs.....they should still have some room to stretch.....but alas not

....mind you in the warm spring sunshine it did help with the cooling process somewhat.

jon.

Re:Not very pc but

a lady in our chalet one year was mortified that she couldn't ski nearly as well due to the fact that she'd put on quite a lot of weight since her last holiday. it completely ruined her trip but, on the plus side (no pun intended), she was determined to lose the weight for the following year.

I really hope she did, she was lovely :D

BMI can be very misleading. I'm 6ft and 13.5 stone which makes my BMI 26 which puts me in the overweight category. I have a physical job and run about 30 - 40 miles a week. Just call me fatty!!

That's possibly true, especially as a beginner - but we all struggle then and maybe skiing will turn out to be "his thing"? Encourage him to give it a go anyway; if he gets the bug then it'll do wonders for his fitness in the long run.

And tell him, "yes, big people can ski"! Gravity becomes your best friend. 8)

When we had our first ski holiday and had group lessons, there was a group of 4 lads, 3 slim guys and their mate who was huge. He turned out to be the best boarder, the one with the most energy. The only thing he had to have 1 day off and rest as he overdid it hurt his back. But back again after a days rest.

BMI is a load of old rubbish, as illustrated by rugby players. I have similar profile to you, would like to loose no more than a stone, but in no way would I consider myself to be obese.

On a positive note, compared to my other half, who weighs about the same as one of my legs, I find it useful to be carrying a bit of weight in the powder. Perhaps that's the true origin of the term 'fat skis'.
