My partners 50th BDay Next Year - Need ideas of places to go

This is a vague request at present.

My partners 50th is next May and I need ideas for a cheap but good European ski resort for 7 days in March/April. We are intermediate/advanced skiers. This also includes our 2 boys aged 7 and 10 both good skiers but still require some lessons if only for 3 days to get their ski legs back.

I have presently been looking at Val Thorens and Sauze d'Oulx.

We've done Niederau for 2 years and don't wish to go back just yet. Sorry Dave Mac.

Thoughts please.

Thanks in advance.

Glyn

Re:My partners 50th BDay Next Year - Need ideas of places to go

How about Andermatt? A bit off the beaten track. Not all that extensive but quite varied pistes. Some really good off-piste. Or try Saas Fee if your budget will run to it. I quite like Val Thorens - but it is a bit of a soulless place for a major birthday, I think.

Les Coches...puts you easily in Paradiski in either direction. You could never ski it all in a week. If you want to find English speaking ESF instruction for your boys then check out

http://www.esf-montchavinlescoches.com/uk/welcome/index.php

If you're looking at early March then how about the Dolomites? Doing the Sella Ronda would make a great birthday out on the slopes and prices are reasonable. Also, maybe La Clusaz (search past threads - but nice village, good skiing and 45 minute transfer from Geneva - with the added attraction of maybe bumping into Wickers!).

Re:My partners 50th BDay Next Year - Need ideas of places to go

Well,
I think the whole article was garbage - maybe the real guy was ill with a stomach ache or something and the mail boy wrote it and he'd never been ski-ing.

I've been to Borovets and it definitely shouldn't be third - it's not even that cheap any more.

And I rang Crystal and the cheapest holiday all season to Courchevel was on the 2nd Jan and it was GBP1058 for 2 people self-catered. The cheapest hotel was GBP1670 for 2 people. And the cheapest Feb half term was GBP1560 per adult. So I don't know where they got their figure of around GBP500 per person for a catered chalet.

Why don't we all e-mail the Independent and ask them about it?

Ally
Ian,
I'm pretty sure they've just lost their minds.

I had a look at their best places in the world to get married in, and HMS Belfast was 8th. I've been on HMS Belfast several times, and I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to get married on her. And for those that don't know, she's a whacking great old battleship moored on the Thames in the middle of London. There must be some far more romantic places in the entire world.

Ally

Re:My partners 50th BDay Next Year - Need ideas of places to go

It's not actually the getting married bit that's expensive. We got married 25 years ago by special license and it only cost GBP12. It's the ridiculous parties people have afterwards, and the stupid clothes they insist on wearing etc. etc. that are so expensive.

But I still don't see why on earth anyone would want to get married on a killing machine - they might as well get married in an abattoir.

Ally

Bulgaria. Nope. Too many cockroaches, lousy food. Not cheap anymore.

My choice would be Zermatt, but carefully choose a room with a Matterhorn view.

Sella Ronda is a good option.
Re:My partners 50th BDay Next Year - Need ideas of places to go

March/April

Make your mind up and you can get a decent recommendation!

EG early March, try Serre Chevalier.
For April it needs to be high up, so Obergurgl, Verbier, Zermatt or Val Thorens. I'd personally suggest Verbier having been there early April 2008.

Personally I would not PLAN to go somewhere at 1200m in April. However, if like you I had the flexibility to be able to ski at 1200m if and when the conditions permitted me to then I most definitely would join you.
I hope that explains the difference between living over here and planning ahead for a holiday, and living abroad and being able to abuse the weather and facilities to your pleasure!
