Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

Hi All,

I know that airlines as other businesses are in business to make money and stay afloat in these turbulent times (cheers Gordon you wonky eyed ***t and Darling you brainless Muppet) but I read today that Ryanair will be adding up to GBP100 per flight if you take two bags on your flight.

Also there is a GBP10 online che ck in fee ,and if you have not got internet facilities to do this you will be forced to pay up to GBP70 to check your luggage in ,in person at the airport (depending on the number of bags etc).

This seems suicidal when you think that Easyjet are cancelling services and may have to lay off hundreds of jobs......maybe if thy treated their passengers a little better and didn't rip them off by charging extotionate rates to change flight details etc they might not have to resort to such methods.

jon.

Thieves....... There is only one way to deal with companies like Ryanair is swallow your pride and " Don't use them", my Scottish, Columbian and Mexican friend would normally comment about my grumbling about some of the prices being charged but really guys there is only one way to deal with this and that is a boycott, I have not used them since 2007 when they decided to charge me Euro50 on my return flighty from Milan for excess baggage, on a four day break myself and Mrs W will take one piece of hold luggage between us so instead of splitting the baggage allowance between two they told us that the one bag was over weight, so I was conned out of Euro50 but because of my boycott they now have lost a lot more and by the way nothing was said on outward flight... just another way they have decided to con money out of my family, so no more, since I have flown with BA and I will not use Ryanair for the foreseeable future. Power to the people.
Re:Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

Ryanair will always manage to stay afloat... it is one of those scenarios that unless evryone puts their hands up at the smae time and stops using them, they will always have a custom. Lets face it, if you have hand luggage only, they are still cheap. Also use a Visa Electron card to avoid the card fees.
But the costs for anything else are escalating and there are so many 'small-print' conditions (like the luggage pooling, although I think this has changed again)... still the BA price checker is quite interesting. It shows you how much money you would save (but you do have to have a very, very heavy bag).

Re:Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

I have just been looking at your web site so don't upset me :D :D but seriously how many of us apart from the business community travel with just hand luggage... I would say not many. There will always be hypocrites that complain I am not one of them, I would rather walk than use Ryan-air, until of course they return my Euro50 with a full written apology begging for my custom and offering to carry my luggage free of charge for as long as I can breath.
So if I do ever visit you which could be a possibility in the future as I have always liked the area I will be driving, good luck with the business. 8) 8)

I don't use Ryanair. However, I very much doubt that what MOL is doing is suicidal - he has an excellent track record of making right business decisions for his company, even if they seem odd to us.

I thought that it now works out cheaper if you take 2 bags of up to 15Kg each. But then some people don't read the terms and conditions that they have signed and then blame Ryanair.
I have never had a bad experience with them and fly with them regularly. Not only are they cheaper by far than other airlines who fly from London to Catalonia, but they are the only one to fly to my airport of choice - Girona,
Long may they keep flying.

Wickers, i don't like 'em either but although they have all these extras 9 times out of 10 they are still the cheapest carrier, with or without skis and with or without luggage.
The biggest thing that needs to change is the poor customer service and the wa they advertise their prices. Make the advertised prices the actual price rather than a fanciful one!

I wont fly with them either.

My one and only flight with them a few years ago was delayed 12hours. They didnt pay any compensation / food vouchers as they said the flight was cancelled not delayed and was putting on an extra flight 12 hours later to help their customers out.

Lucky it was a business trip and not a holiday so at least my company paid for food and drink while I waited the 12 long hours.

Skisuit

 :DHi,

As with some of the other replies, I must count mylf fortunate that all of my ski clobber is out at my apartment so I could get away with just hand luggage or none at all.

Also with the eco nutter ,carbon footprint charges being added driving down to the alps (if two or three travel) ,may start to look like a cheaper option.....I do this now and again, if the driving is shared it can be more convenient, and also extends the trip by a day or so. :D

jon.

Re:Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

Wow, there are a lot of seriously upset people on here when it comes to Ryanair.
Funny how things change, isnt it?
I myself have flown with them several times. I have to day that going back a couple of years, the noises from the punters were about late flights, cancelled flights and dirty planes, but they were damned cheap flights.
Nowadays they fly brand new Boeing 737-800's and have the best record in Europe for ontime flights, something around the 90% mark I am led to believe although I am prepared to stand corrected.
I have flown with them and not experienced a problem, although I have to say I am not a fan of the budget airline way of getting you onto a plane, ie open the gate and watch the scrum ensue!
More recently, things have changed, and prices have gone up what with all the add-ons. Easyjet are the same, although Ryanair are quite cute about the way they build things in when you book and expect you to delete them!
Nowadays its extra money for everything.

However, I flew Ryanair from Luton to Girona this weekend, and I have to say that not seeing massive queues of idiots who dont know how to pack bags, overfill their baggage or simply fanny about at check in was a welcome sight. Checking in online meant no queuing for more than about 5 minutes as its all baggage drops, and if you have hand luggage only you go straight through security with no check in at all. BA have operated a similar system for a while which I have also experienced, and one which is obviously better because you choose a seat when you check in online and you tend to get better service. Although not better aircraft, as Mr O'Leary has bought well, its a good plane the 800 series.

My flights out and back were bang on time. The flight crew were helpful, polite and very cosmopolitan. The food on board was horribly over priced, but then I dont ever buy food or drink on a flight to be fair. Check in was a breeze both ends, and the only mildly stressful incidents were when the first person bolted to be first in the queue about an hour before the flight was due to leave, which created a free for all and a lot of tutting, and then the turbulence on the way home, but I dont blame Mr O'Leary for the weather.

Having said all that, I would not choose Ryanair to use for a ski holiday now that they are charging what they do for ski carriage. BA have now slipped down the pecking order with their ridiculous costs for this, so for me I will continue to use the charter airlines until they too increase charges in relation to these carriers. That might be the time to consider the drive to the alps. But until then I have to say, despite the rising prices, Ryanair now offer a better product and service than I have experienced before, and I guess like anything in life, you get what you pay for. I still dont understand the people who complain about paying excess baggage or check in fees when they failed to read the T&Cs when they bought the ticket online though. One person I know travelled with 12 people in a group, and they bought online obviously, and had to pay GBP480 when they turned up at Stansted as he had failed to check in online. His defence - no one reminded him. Ryanair do actually send you reminder emails now, but his 2nd defence was that he doesnt check his hotmail every single day. Incredible.

Re:Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

Many good relevant points here Tony. I don't have a hang up with any airline. My local Easyjet service has, with one exception, been spot-on. Ryanair do seem to have overcooked it regarding skis. Maybe, they would prefer not to have skis/boards on as luggage. They do seem to be planning to tax you if you need to pee often.
Life is about choice.
It is good that Euro legislation is gradually forcing all these guys to be upfront about prices and charges, Easyjet did seem to accept this quite quickly, whereas Ryanair still seem to be dragging their feet.

Re:Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

The real answer to all this Tony is that Ryan air peed me off with their inconsistent approach to their baggage allowance, god knows how many years of flying I have undertaken and I have never had to pay excess baggage before because I have always been under the limit, they decided on a technicality to charge me Euro50, I look at it as being mugged by Ryan air so I have now used my right as an individual to stop using them. I only seem these days to fly once per year last year it was BA who were very good and next year it looks like Easy jet, but BA is not out of the picture yet. I feel so strongly about Ryan air that I am in the fortunate position of being able to spend may be couple more quid to take a more expensive flight.

I will use them if I feel the need to, thanks.

Ian, I think you are far blinkered. I read with interest that you personally feel you were done by them on a technicality. Bottom line is they give you 15kg baggage allowance, if you are not overweight with it then they dont charge you, simple. They also make it absolutely clear what the limits and dimensions are for hand luggage, so again if you stick to what you are aware is correct, you wont get stung for extra charges, so please feel free to enlighten us as to what caused them to charge you extra, if you were adhering to the limits....

Its people who turn up with 2 cases weighing 25kg each or forget their passport and then try to blame the airline who really make me laugh.
If you google reviews on airlines, there are plenty of people with gripes against lots of airlines around the world and not just Ryanair. Whilst as I have said before I would probably not choose them to fly with given another option, I have used them a number of times without any problems and without being charged additional fees. Every airline lets people down from time to time, but Ryanair actually now do have a particularly good record of on time flights.

This venedtta against Ryanair I believe comes from people who probably havent adhered to the regulations or expect too much from an airline who provide a limited standard of service.

I turned up at the airport as I do every year myself and Mrs W for a short trip without child always carry one piece of hold luggage between us, no problem at this end they weighed the bag it came to 19 kg and off we went to passport control and then on to Bergamo picked up the hire car and departed to Passo Tonale.
We return five days later to Bergamo only to be told that there was an excess baggage charge to pay as we were over 15Kg, they ( Ryan air ) told us "if we did not want to pay the excess charge we should go and buy another suitcase and transfer 4Kg of luggage into the case then there would be no charge".
Now Tony put yourself in a similar position and I really don't think you would be a happy little J2skier.
Wickers, Ryanair do not allow passengers to "pool" their luggage allowance. Each bag must be a max of 15kg regardless of how many bags you paid to take, or how many travelled in your group. The fact that you took 1 bag, limited your party to 15kg, unfortunately.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the check in staff are incentivised to increase revenue.

The fact that you took 1 bag, limited your party to 15kg, unfortunately.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the check in staff are incentivised to increase revenue.

Re:Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

I do sympathise Ian. For all that Ryanair are correct, I bet that all of us would feel the same as you, were that to happen to us.

With low budget airlines, it is important to be on top of the T&Cs. Each airline has a different target market. What is more, they strategically adjust that market target, when competitors make adjustments.

As Bandit says, Ryanair want to strip out customers with hold baggage. The weakness in their tactics, (as opposed to strategy), is that they have a weight restriction on hand baggage. What did Easyjet do? They removed the weight restriction on hand baggage.

We have to recognise that these airlines have uncovered the laziness of large carriers, have identified and separated out their costs, and made their market offers accordingly.

The knock-on effect is that where they are in competition against large carriers, there has been a competitive effect on price.

Sorry Ian, you didnt adhere to the restrictions and regulations and got caught out. You cant go blaming the airline. Bandit is correct when she points out that you are allowed ONE BAG PER PASSENGER to a max of 15kg checked in. You used to be able to pool your allowances, but that changed a couple of years ago and therefore had you adhered to the guidelines, you would have been fine. The daft part of your one man boycott is that you actually paid for 2 bags and only took 1. Had you taken 2 bags, you would have been fine.
Like I said earlier, you only have yourself to blame, and like their restrictions or not, thats what you have to adhere to, and thats why I guess you have decided not to use them again.
You know I am right.

It doesnt matter whether you like it or not, its written in black in white in their T&Cs. In fact, its now very clear on their website when you book. 15kg per person in 1 bag checked in MAXIMUM or pay excess charges.

I looked on the site and all the tickets need to be used by early december........ I don't plan to fly until March, so another Ryan air promo which If I decided to fly with said airline which I'm not
would be of no use to me what so ever. I sure it will benefit the business community but not the ski market.

On the contrary Wickers, flights to Basel and back GBP1 each in early December. Could be an absolute steal for any UK skier wanting to ski Zermatt and Saas-Fee :D

You cannot whinge about them not flying when you want to travel

Re:Ryanair....Is Oleary Trying To Bankrupt His Own Business?

I spent several hours last night trawling through their website trying to find flights to anywhere on the one weekend between now and Xmas when I am able to get away. Many of the cheap flights, and there are some at a flat GBP5 and GBP10 too, were midweek which is ok for those who have time off remaining.
I have ended up with the choice between a weekend in Dublin for GBP20 return, and thats about it. I will probably not bother.

I am sure they will do another promo for Q1 next year which might enable me to have some time away skiing next February. Either that or I will cash in my airlines again like last year.

Ian - didn't you get anything back from Mr O'Leary, not even a coffee????
