we want to try a different resort in Austria

Hi guys

summer is coming to an end so it is time to start thinking about where we are going in Feb!! I have rebooked the same hotel as last year in Kitzbuhel for a couple of weeks but we would like to stay on mountain somewhere nearby (my daughter will be with her school class again in Kitz so have to stay near to pick her up at the end of the week) Does anyone know of any catered chalets in the surrounding areas - on mountain. My younger kids are all now up to skiing just about anything but we would still like to put them into ski school and my daughter wants to try snow boarding this year too as i promised her once she could side edge on her wake board she could learn to snowboard!!! (We are all avid waterskiers and wakeboarders in summer - which is all year over here in Abu Dhabi ) Therefore we would need a snowboarding school nearby. All help greatly appreciated. It would be nice to go somewhere different!!!!

Great to back on the site again, I can see me wasting a lot of time while I am at work over the next couple of months

Carol

Hi Carol,

Your message is not coming over too clearly. You have booked a hotel, but you want a mountain chalet. You will pick up your daughter at the end of the week. You can be arrested for most of this. Child neglect. :-)

Can you please clarify?

There is a mountain hutte system in Austria, that varies from huttes to hotels and chalets.

It drives me crazy that many times when I am on the first lift, I cannot do fresh tracks, because people staying at the top of the mountain are wowfing their bacon rolls and then skiing down as I am on the Gondola. Ski Rage!

Hi Dave Mac

Sorry for not being clear, busy moving house, going to work and getting kids back to school!!

to clarify, we are going to Austria for two weeks in Feb, 13th to 27th I rebooked the same place in Kitz for two weeks that we stayed at last year and have to confirm the booking end of September. We have had thoughts since that we would like to try somewhere else for a week while my daughter is in her school camp in Kitzbuhel and we will then join her in Kitz when the rest of the school kids go back home to Abu Dhabi i,e, we have one week elsewhere, one week Kitzbuhel.

We thought of staying on mountain but since my post we feel we need a resort where my 11 year old daughter can start snowboarding instead of skiing this year, something I promised her last year. We also have a 7 year old who will be in ski school (he wants to learn snowbording too, do they take then this young?? he will be 8 in January and can wakeboard already (sorry off topic there again, waffling) so far have looked at Ishgl, Solden, Obergurgl, Wagrain, Alpendorf but it is sooooo expensive, more than double what I pay in Kitz and I thought that was expensive!

Any advice you or others can give me on where to go and accommodation which has a good snowboard school is greatly appreciated. We do not need a lot of nightlife, half board is my preference ( I like a holiday too) so a couple of bars and a few ski shops (can't buy the gear here so do it when I arrive usually) is all we need.

Your mountain huts with fresh tracks have me drooling though :P

thanks

Carol

Re:we want to try a different resort in Austria

Hi Carol,
I am still not totally clear. If your young ones wish to learn, albeit skiing or snowboarding, then, usually, mountain top is not the place to be.
If on the other hand, you are a competent, (red), skier, and you want an authentic rustic place, I would consider the Rubezahl Hut. I located to left of top of the Niederau Gondola. There are several other mountain top placs, but this would be my first choice.

Re:we want to try a different resort in Austria

Your message is crystal clear to me Carol. You want to try somewhere different, probably with a chalet feel to it, where everyone can have a bit of everything, and one of your kids wants to try snowboarding in classes.
Hence my suggestion for Verbier.
Ischgl is on my list but you might find it a little raucous with kids. Verbier is more civilised, although if you want a club at 4am you can find one! I think it would be right up your street.

Re:we want to try a different resort in Austria

Carol,

I don't think your lad will be too young but budget to pay for private lessons for the pair of them...

Wagrain and Alpendorf have some great guest houses that offer half-board accommodation.
Have you tried doing an accommodation request through www.skiamade.com ?
You put in what you want and where you might consider (eg. half-board, 2 rooms 2 adults, 2 kids within Ski Amade and your dates) this then gets sent to a forum that all the guest houses and hotels pay to use. We then look at what is good for contact you directly.

It is a good system and means that you can often find cheaper accommodation than the heavily advertised hotels.

It is also worth trying www.booking.com and www.tiscover.at

Anyhow... Wagrain/Alpendorf/Ski Amade is about an hours drive from Kitzbuhel so still pretty local if there are any probs with your daughter.

Re:we want to try a different resort in Austria

You are quite right Ian, thats not good for the Rubezahl. Niederau probably couldn't give a stuff. The Ribi is at the top of the mountain and doesn't affect Niederau.

Sepp Steiner owns the Rubezahl, and the Jochalm. The Rubezahl has beautiful rustics, well, think wood everywhere, big fireplace, guy on guitar, wienerschnitzels.... Stop, I'm filling up. :(

The Jochalm is known locally as Rudis. No one knows who Rudi was, It has been called that for all time. Again, rustic as rustic would be. Many J2skiers have spilt some beer in there.

Sepp speaks local deutsch at the speed of light. I catch one word in 10, (on a good day!), and just guess if a "jah" or a "nein" is the due response. Of course, if he has asked an open ended question, I am in beeeg strife.
