Train from airport to resort

Ok here goes,

I am planning on a ski trip in Jan 10 however as I have no mates (at least non that ski or have the funds) I am contemplating going solo. To avoid horrendous cost of single person car hire any suggestions on resorts that are easily reached from airport train stations, if you could also outline the airport and nearest train station to the resort this would be cool.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can spare the time to help.

Cheers

Re:Train from airport to resort

Really, all of Switzerland is linked by train and Postbus. I travel by plane/rail/Postbus and it works well. The train stations are in the airport.
The most I have to walk (outdoors) is 5 mins from the bus stop in the resort.

For France, fly in to Geneva and catch a bus to most of the Tarentaise with ease. Also good bus services from Grenoble, serving the Southern Alps.

If you like your skiing with company, you might consider going on a chalet holiday. :D

It is the same for most of Tirol and Salzburgerland. From Munich airport, you can take the train through the Inn valley, this gives you the Wildschoenau, Alpbachtal, Zillertal,, the whole of the Innsbruck area. This assumes that you have not changed at Worgl, and headed off to Hopfgarten, (to get into the schiwelt), Kitzbuhle, Zell-am-zee.

You can post bus to many other places, and the odd taxi is not prohibitive.

Re:Train from airport to resort

Not Fred drifting, but Bandit-brain picking.... Two issues.

1. Getting a party of six from Chambery to La Tania, and return a week later, looks like a cost of around GBP400 for a private minibus. Any thoughts on a possible lower cost method?

2. I want to go from La Tania to Niederau, so Innsbruck, or more hopefully Worgl. So, I am looking at a 7 to 8 hour train journey, from Geneva, but first have to get to Geneva Hauptbahnhof.

Or, does anyone have any knowledge of Euro flights from Geneva/Chambery to Innsbruck?

Any contributors, that give a result, will be heavily rewarded with Zipfer beer on the 18th January, in the Bichlwirt.

Re:Train from airport to resort

Thanks for the responses that gives me plenty to go on.

Daved you are right re cheapest transfer don't care if train, bus or taxi. The GBP40 transfer from Salzburg you mention is that bus ot taxi?

Bandit, I most likely will go down the chalet route as I am not overly keen on skiing anything too exciting by myself.

Thanks again

davidsa2 - I know that some resorts (within reach of Innsbruck I think) were looking into providing a free transfer (by minibus I assume) service this coming winter; deals likely to be announced/advertised over the next month or so... so keep an eye out 8)

For the La Tania transfer, I reckon the price is quite good for 6 people. Yes, it could be done cheaper by thumbing, but if you took a bus each way, the price of the tickets, along with a taxi or 2 from the bus depot would eat the savings. Door to door, it does not seem bad to me.

For your transfer to Niederau, I would be tempted to take a regular bus from Moutiers to GVA early evening, catch the train 1 stop to Geneva main station and stay overnight in the City Hostel near the main railway station in Geneva.

The choices I see for you are:
Pop back to the airport in the morning and catch a flight to Munich with Swiss and continue by train.

http://www.gva.ch/en/Portaldata/1/Resources/fichiers/publications/publications_informative/2009_horaires-ete-GVA.pdf

Catch an early train from Geneva to Innsbruck, with sbb.ch, taking between six and a half to seven hours forty to arrive.

Take a good book :D

Re:Train from airport to resort

Bandit, Thank you for that info. Don't really want to go the night before, (I might miss something), and I am sure that my OH would not like that. (She will be heading back to Scotland!)

I was surprised by the number of flights from Geneva to Munich.

So, although our group plan was to arrive and depart Chambery, I may try to engineer that towards Geneva. Bit of a PITA for my rest of the group, but the flight to Munchen is a clincher.

On the other hand, having never done the train journey through Switzerland, that does look an attractive option for me. It is just that to go in one day from La Tania to Worgl seems to be 30 min +3 hrs + 8 hrs+ planned early arrival/wait at Geneva. Add half an hour up to N. That is 12/13 hours. Do-able, depending on how early you have to leave LT.

One Zipfer I owe you. 18th Jan, the Bichlwirt. But thanks again.

Errk, cancel that Zipfer!

Flight with Swiss GBP450-ish, single one way, GVA~MUN! I can buy nine pairs of skis for that money! Enough to keep me going for another 108 years. Mimimum! Or two and a bit years seasons passes!

Is this the dark side of Switzerland? The underbelly of France?

I can't believe this.

Are you absolutely certain that the price was not quoted in GBP? It might be cheaper to buy a return ticket and be a no-show.

As a resident on mainland Europe, I expect that Tino will have the German equivalent of a Railcard, which will give savings on long distance travel in other european countries.

Re:Train from airport to resort

It's all about understanding the intergrated transport systems and how to get the best out of them. I travel solo a lot and do have a Bahncard as Bandit suggests, however travelling to CH or AT is sometimes cheaper without. I have one tip which I figured out when heading for Zermatt with Pabs, sometimes booking the required train starting in a neighboring country is cheaper even if you don't do 200km of the journey.

Happy to research and help anyone on this, but now I am at a rave in the sun and need another beer.

Re:Train from airport to resort

OK, so by plane, looking at GBP400+ Euros, Lufthansa.

By train Geneva to Worgl, 10.45am dep, 7h 20m, 29 Eu 2nd class, 39 Eu 1st class. Providing I have read the OBB site correctly.

In apartment by 7pm, Harfenwirt by 8pm, Bichlwirt 9pm. Happiness.

First Class, 39Euros. I might splash out! A better view of Switzerlald than by plane anyway.

So only remaining issue is getting from La Tania to Geneva train station in good time. (Good time because the 39 Euro is a specific train), an open ticket is 160 something Euros.

Anything Zillertaler is surely an aquired taste? I don't have time.
