2010 Season Kit Lust Begins.....

I paid a visit to CEM's fine emporium today, and got my hands on some of the new season's ski boots. His 2010 stock is apparently arriving daily and his stockroom is filling up with lots of shiny boots. I can only justify buying 1 pair (sigh), and I got to see the 2 different boot models that he thinks may suit me, so I'm heading back for a fitting session next month.

He has a new carpet and new lighting too, very smart :D

BTW he's not paying me to say any of this....(really)

I need new boots. Mine were giving up on me in April. CEM talked me through emergency modifications via email.I did get some pain relief, though the problems would only be resolved by replacing the boots, which had reached the end of their natural life (apparently).

It's surprising what can be achieved with a pair of nail scissors and strong resolve :lol:

He's just been "on the road" around lots of dry slopes, with mobile kit AIU. Not sure if he plans a repeat round.

As he is a Glaswegian, he will advise who you should contact in the bootfitters community in Scotland. Drop him a PM, or contact him through his website.

I wouldn't trust a boot fitter in Glasgow as far as I could throw them. There isn't enough feedback from people with good experiences that I could have faith in, I also don't have enough knowledge about boot fitting or a suitable boot for the shape of my foot to make a judgement call.

CEM has been in the biz for about 20 years, fitting ski boots throughout. He will know who to trust with your feet. He won't suggest (just) a shop, if he has a rec. it will be a name.

Salomon impact 8s I think they had come in the day before.

My girlfriend found it most amusing me sitting in them the last two evenings to "break them in". Getting up and down the stairs is interesting feels like I'm doing an impression of Frankenstein's monster

got a question (mainly for you bandit)
how do you know when your boots are "done" - Im not looking for a reason to get new ones, honest.....
just wondering what happens and when you can tell when they are ready to be changed?
mine are only 2 seasons old (salomon xwave 9s) - my dad has had his boots for over 10 yrs so doubt i need new ones soon!

Rossyhead, This is my situation. There were subtle changes in the volume of my liners early last winter. My boots were starting to feel like wellies. Time to tighten them a bit!
In April I started to get a pain in a sticky out bone on the outside of my foot. I'd already had the boot "blown" and space made to accommodate this bone, so I thought my feet had become fatter.

Well, as the bone got banged more and more, and it certainly did swell :lol: As the boots liner had become compacted, when I flexed the boot, my foot was twisting, as it was not held properly (I already had them done up very tight).
If the liner is kaput, the choice is to replace the liner, or the whole boot, and as the shell is way too wide for my skinny foot, it's time for a whole new pair :D
My new boots will be 5mm narrower (I think), and CEM will be making space for sticky out bones etc :D

:DNew gear is needed, by many I would think.....mind you in my case after around 12 years in the same ski pants a new pair is in order......by the end of the last trip all the groin had split :thumbdown:....

....so will have to stop being tight and fork out for some newbies.....the only problem now is whether to wait and see what stock the local shop has in Bourg in October or buy local here at home...

All this chat about feet and boots, I went into a shop brought the pair I liked, the staff then started running around in a panic saying we need to heat the inners up ...... my response was get on with it then because I want to ski not eat soup, so they heated them up and off I went that was two years ago, the moral to the story is get the right fit and away you go never have a problem with boots or shoes come to that....its all in the mind :( :( :( :(

I got a lovely new pair of Salomon Impact 8's last year so I wont be looking for new ones for a while yet. I knew I needed new ones when my old boots suddenly felt like wellies and I was able to move my foot without the boot turning instantly. The lining felt like cardboard as oppose to foam. I love my new boots too. Mrs H also had some nice shiny new Salomon RS8 Divines for much the same reasons, so luckily we are all booted up for this season and more hopefully.
I have a new pair of RED sallopettes, Nike ACG no less, and a smart black Bailo jacket, but I really want some red Adidas goggles and thats me done. Mrs H is suggesting she wants a new jacket, as her green Bonfire jacket has done ALL of 2 seasons now. Brown, seemingly. Mwuaah.

I really can not justify too much for next season, but I really need to invest in the best gloves I can get. Had new ones last year, mittens with detachable fleece linings but even they were not warm enough. I was fine skiing but it was when we did excursions etc my hands froze.

No wearing them hasn't suddenly given me an urge to do the ironing :P

Worn them for 10 hours so far, mostly just sitting though rather than actually walking around in them. As someone who doesn't even like to wear slipper indoors, ski boots are a bit hot and sweaty and uncomfortable indoors heh.

Yup I'll be giving them a go at Hemel for a full 8 hour day on 3rd Sept, going to a coaching day then. And a 4 hours snowheads Hemel bash on the 12th

While in Bourg will be having a nose around Sport-Extreme next to Lidl,they sell some good gear at reasonable prices......fail in that a trip to Two Seasons in Northants....a good excuse for some extra goodies :D :D :D

Mostly sitting in your boots will not settle the liner into the right shape for support when you ski. Walk, flex them, stand in a skiing position, and make sure your heels are firmly into the heel pocket. Avoid standing still for long. IMHO (amateur) about 12 hours for the initial settling, it's a bit early to have fine tuning done, unless you are in agony, in which case you know the number to call!
Doing the ironing was a sensible suggestion on my part :P

Salomon have launched the custom air helmet, so that it fits anyone, allegedly. Might be worth a look as its fully adjustable to fit.

I fear that my Spanish was a little too colloquial. My thoughts were that it would be right and proper if RossF were to introduce Pablo to Joaquin. Three dodgy characters if ever there were. :shock:

im waiting on some k2 thraxis boots and i feel like a little kid ,the shop has already told me that it could be at least 2 weeks but i want them nooooow ! :-)
oh and maybe some new socks ,has any one got any good recommendations for ski/snowboard socks . i brought a few pairs of cheapy ones last year and wondered if is was a case of 'you get what you pay for' or not . i dont realy know what i should be expecting from a sock ,,,after all it is only a sock .

Naturally colour is the first thing I thought of. Most of my ski wear is some shade of blue, including boots, however my skis are red. And being a cone head, if I wore a red lid I'd look like a lipstick.

i like the look of those but i'd have to try one on first.
i brought a hat last year and really wish id spent more time trying different ones on ... wearing it at tamworth or manchester for only a few hours was ok but by the second day of the holiday my forehead was hurting .

I dropped into TK Maxx Thurrock today, and sadly all they had were Trespass and D2B jackets. There was the odd Maier jacket and a brand called "Chamonix" that dont look great. I imagine the better stuff, eg HH, ACG, etc will start to come in later on. However, in the meantime if its cheap you are looking for, give it a go. If you want something a bit more kitsch, I wouldnt bother just now.
No gloves or socks in either. Or goggles :(

Well I am absolutely thrilled because the 2 things I wanted for this season have been sourced and purchased.

Firstly I needed a new pair of sunnies. True to tradition, I lost my bestest ever paid when I was away in Santorini. Every holiday I lose or break a pair and it makes me mad!
The ones I wanted were GBP50 in a local glasses shop, and I came home and googled them. I found them on offer online at GBP35 and then also found someone selling a pair on ebay for GBP12.99. Yes, 12 pounds and 99 pence.
They turned up yesterday, they are the genuine article, and I have my old snazzy shades back again for a new season. Just goes to show you the manufacturing costs and mark up on things like this.

Secondly, I was after a new pair of goggles. My North Face ones are fine and look good too, but they have a few minor scratches inside the lenses, and I was also wanting to get some red/white ones for the new season, and set my heart on a pair from the Adidas range. But I was not prepared to pay GBP125rrp for them. I found an online shop selling them at GBP89 but I wasnt happy paying this as I only paid GBP25 for my North Face ones courtesy of TK Maxx 2 years ago. However, I did some more googling and found a shop in the states selling them for $89 (roughly GBP53) and I aint going to get them cheaper than that so they are being delivered to my son at Uni in Michigan this week.

I am now well and truly sorted and happy for the season ahead. Thats not to say I wont end up with another jacket at some stage......

Very good question, Ian. Well, 3 years ago he was playing non league football, and thanks to Posh picking him up and developing him, he has made the jump into league football, and has proven already he is one of the most talented players in the Championship. Bids were turned down in the summer of 7 figures for him, and as long as he is happy and we are doing ok, I think he will stay. However, as always, the lure of more money and a big club will invariably take him elsewhere. Sir Alex has already told Darren that Boyd is one of the most elegant players he has ever seen.
Once someone offers GBP5 million for him, I would imagine he will go, as that kind of money for a small club like ours is manna from heaven.
I have a feeling he, and several other players, will stay with us for as long as Darren Ferguson is in charge, which if he carries on playing such attractive football won't be long sadly.

It is too early, November is the month for me to start doing a bit of work on the skis, December start adding a few more coats of wax, check that the boots have wintered well, January final coat of wax and we are ready to go........ so that will be five sets of skis for waxing and possibly a sixth if I can find a pair suitable for little W and a pair a blades that did not get used last year, what a hobby..... :wink: :wink:

Took a trip to a TK Maxx yesterday afternoon, and was thoroughly disappointed to find yet more Trespass gear.
It appears they are focusing this year on the beginner market, as some of the trespass stuff is very keenly priced, and would be perfect for first timers or people looking to buy their first set of ski clothing.
Not much good for a fussy wife who specifically wants an electric blue jacket.

Tony have you checked out Ellis Brigham ? There`s a couple of blue jackets on there web site.One`s North Face and the other is Burton,Or
if you want to spoil her for Christmas there`s a nice blue one by Kjus from Snow & Rock. :wink:

Thanks AJ, the NF one is a particular favourite of hers. I also like the Eider range, lovely colours and styles, but pricey too.

Burton stuff is for Boarders though.

The skis belong to the Snow Centre Hemel...and I was very happy to hand them back, as it's a long time since I used slow short skis.

All my clothes are tatty old stuff, all serviceable ski clothing is in our store cupboard in resort. I would never dress up to ski indoor snow, it's not worth it.

Not sure where you are coming from with the purple rinse comment :?:

I bought my first bit of kit on friday! ( I saw I bought it, really it was my dad that bought it as my christmas present!) Its a quicksilver coat in electric blue colour, a bit thicker then my green fatface coat so will use both for a holiday! Dont particulalry need it at all but really liked it! :D

Oh yes, I am pleased to say that the rather super shades I had last season that i managed to get through a season without losing or breaking got lost in Santorini by Mrs H in June have been replaced. GBP50 they wanted for them in my local glasses shop.
But I found a guy selling the very same ones on Ebay for GBP12.99, so I bought 2 pairs as I know I am going to end up with 1 pair lost or broken.

2 for the price of half of one!

Oh yes, I am pleased to say that the rather super shades I had last season that i managed to get through a season without losing or breaking got lost in Santorini by Mrs H in June have been replaced. GBP50 they wanted for them in my local glasses shop.
But I found a guy selling the very same ones on Ebay for GBP12.99, so I bought 2 pairs as I know I am going to end up with 1 pair lost or broken.

2 for the price of half of one!

I have to try and find some shades to-morrow, just dropped mine out of my bag and stood on them. I need them for next week (I hope). Dont fancy my chances of getting any-thing decent in my lunch break

Its official I am now in winter ski mode. Bought some black eider sallo's this week, gonna go purple and black this season.

Nice :lol: i was thinking along the same lines. My OH caught me looking at a royal purple bonfire jacket this morning and i get the vibe she didn't like it :roll: :cry:

Love the colour purple just never worn it for ski wear. They call me the purple ninja at work, 'cos I often wear purple and I kick ass :lol:
