Agreed, for that kind of money I could be renting premium skis on each visit. Although the pricing includes the cost of a Sporttube.
Pricey now, could the company absorb any extra business costs before raising the price, and making it daft money?

I see the Skiclub have not measured this service against Easyjet, where the pre-booked price per flight is GBP18.50

GBP230 is an obscene amount of money, and this has to surely be aimed at the sort of people who take a chalet holiday in Davos so that they dont have to worry what it costs for anything

Even as a world-class fritterer (word?) of money, I think this is a crazy price... it's an (il)logical next step following a service launched a couple of years ago which will pick up yr holiday luggage and have it delivered to yr hotel. Don't think I'll be buying shares.

Plus on charter flights its still only GBP21 return for ski carriage. I dont mind carrying them for the car to the check in, and then from the carousel to the coach at the other end.
I am yet to find a ski holiday where I could drive which would compete on price with the packages I take.

We contemplated driving this year but chose Eurostar instead, we get a discount through the TO and carriage is obviously free.

I don't know where this company did their market research for their new business, but if anyone were to decide to start up any business to do with skiing I know a fairly liberal bunch of people who would give an honest opinion....

Move to central Europe and have done with it. I have only ever paid once to transport my board and funnily enough it was the only package deal I have done and was from the UK. Mind I have only ever flown on 2 ski holidays and one was Chile

Easiest for me is Grindelwald.

Interlaken Express direct from Karlsruhe on the ICE.

Opposite platform and 12 minutes later, train to Grindelwald

Easy, comfortable, fast, free and a bar )

Yes, some of the Swiss transfer times seem long. The trade-off, is that the scenery is so stunning, that the Swiss build the trains with windows in the roof, and passengers are pressed up to the glass like kids. I don't read much on my regular transfer round Lac Leman and up to Grimentz :D

There is capital cost of the clamps and iron and edge setting and other tools - and possibly fume extraction (certainly on the home work bench I saw earlier this year. On top of that there are the multi use consumables (files, stones, edge-setting tools. Add to that the cost of wax. Last time I looked into setting myself up the cost was around GBP200, IIRC. Now you may have already spent on most of the kit already, but others will not have, nor may they have the 'free' workshop space. yes, I have odne skis on the kitchen table, but it ain't ideal.

Of course the other costs being addressed are those of DIY ski carriage and a sportstube (never felt one of those necessary, but others do. You also get freedom from having to lug your skis around, and storing them when not in use. I won't go for it, but I can see that for 2 pairs of skis, there is a temptation.

Re:Ski Carriage Service

Quite a lot of the set up costs that you quote, are one-off, so the costs of home servicing diminish year on year.
This carriage service is priced for 1 week per year for 2 pairs of skis. I think it will appeal to people, who don't take any interest in their equipment and who really should be hiring skis.
There is a market, I believe that it will be a small one.

True, but the one off costs are there, and so self-servicing is not 'free' as depicted by IW. As I live close-ish to sHs' spyderjon, so far I have opted to take my skis to him before each of my 3 weeks per season skiing - the one-off cost did not seem worth it, and I enjoy the tea, biccies and chat whilst my skis are being fettled. The question of ski-servicing quality is one of the weak links in the deal, I think. The other is the bijou problemette of how you get your skis back if the company goes bust.

Most other things, I can do just as well, so it becomes a choice.

Re:Ski Carriage Service

Going back to the post, GBP230, or GBP115/pair is a bit of a nonsense price. You can hire top skis, and change them every day, for less than that.

The only thing that I can't do realistically is a base grind, every thing else with a bit of practice you can do better than a shop, there is something about doing your skis by hand, it does not take too long to repair or prepare even after the poor snow year of a couple of years back where all our skis took a pounding it did not take a hell of a long to get them back into shape.
For those who are real keen skiers I recommend giving it a go, I taught myself off the internet on a old pair of skis, just think of the excitement of not knowing if they are going to run or not and of course they always do, great fun. Go on invest your really enjoy it, especially for "Joaquin Guzman Loera]It" he always has plenty of time on his hands

Disagree, you are obviously going to the wrong shops. Besides, why do something for yourself that you can pay other people to do for you  ;)

That does not make any sense at all. Most people will do things themselves (if they can) BECAUSE you have to pay other people to do it.

But it is quite an effort to drive out to him, and I know I could service my Missions myself. I hope to have workshop space again by the beginning of next season, so maybe I will set myself up. One thought: I may be a keen skier - but I ski but 3 weeks a year. On that basis, a 200g pack of wax would last me about 4 years. Does ski wax have a shelf life?

No it doesn't really, I have had some wax for a few years the real old stuff I tend to keep in my boot bag to rub on the edges at the end of a holiday to stop rusting.. 8)

Ps you can buy wax in smaller packs just shop around
