I think for GBP30,000 I'd want to buy a ski property (or at least a bit of it), not rent one! :shock:

Never nice when customers lose money, but I think in this case they can probably just about afford it. )

Yup, I'd agree there, our hard earned cash that could have gone towards a much more reasonable ski holiday in somewhere a lot less fancy.

Really - I am very fond of the Queen, and some of the younger ones aren't too bad either, including Prince Charles (although I know he isn't that young any more).

We did get rid of our king once, a very long time ago, if you remember your history lessons, and then we decided to have one back again.

Not if your new job entails getting a Pharmacy, classed as essential services you wont get the day off. On another subject does every-one know that boxing day this year falls on a Saturday not classed as a bank holiday this year you will have to wait until the Monday to have your boxing day off :cry:

Sorry I'm a bit late with this, but I've been cleaning for the last two days (Friday and Saturday changeover days).

Concerning the Royal Family (again),
where do you think British people came from?

It has now been proved that we are all descended from 'mitochondrial Eve' who lived somewhere in Africa (query Ethiopia) around 150,000 years ago. Thus none of us are 'native' Britons - all our ancestors came from somewhere else.

Anyone that has studied pre-history knows that the U.K wasn't permanently populated until very late on in the history of mankind, because of the ice ages. The ice ages didn't end until around 10,000 years ago, and ever since then Britain has been populated by successive waves of 'immigrants'.

We have had people from somewhere in the region of Iraq, the Celts from central Europe and Belgium, the Romans from Italy, Jutes and Angles from Denmark, Saxons from Germany, Vikings from Scandinavia, Normans from France etc. etc...

And during my lifetime we have had the Jamaicans, the Pakistanis etc. etc. and just lately we have had the Eastern Europeans - the Poles etc.

So, I would say the current Royal Family are very representative of the multi national modern nature of Britain.

We are all partly French.....just one big old melting pot, and thats what I would like to do with the Royal family stick um in the pot, or better still get them to do a proper job, i'll do an exchange with them. As I spent many working years of my life in a job bearing the title Equal Opportunities Specialist (for 5000 staff), I understand the nature of racism, and how it is manifested in society. I have seen no racism on J2ski. Please do not confuse bigotry, nationalism, or republicanism (which are lawful behaviours) with racism which is not.

Personally I like the fact the UK has a Monarchy, I think the concept that the ruling Government can be over-ruled at any given moment by some doddery auld bat with a blue rinse makes it especially comforting. Especially as I have no intention of moving back there.

But to be serious for a second, I am gonna stand in support of Ally (on the Monarchy), as I am sure the burden of the Monarchy is not as great as it is stated here. Tourism generated by the quaintness of the Royal Family, as well as the history of the Royal Family can not be discounted. However anyone who wants to visit anywhere within 10 miles of Slough for any reason whatsoever escapes me somewhat.

Tourists flock to the UK for the history, it can be argued that the royal family form part of that history, my view is and has been for many years that they are very outdated and form no real purpose in modern day society......just an opinion of course 8) 8)

Bandit, surely there is an issue of context. Cross marriage within Royalty provided an element of stability in Europe.

Allie G, "We" did not revert to the crown, the noble lords did, when they recalled Charles II back from exile. "We" had nothing to do with the decision. Although, I for one am very glad that we did. I like the tradition and continuity of the Royal family.

Our present queen has seen off some appalling politicians, and in my view has provided a benchmark for our society.

Our Queen is the 32nd great-granddaughter of King Alfred the Great who was the first effective King of England from 871-899.

In other words, the British Royal family have been around here in Britain for a very long time. Yes, they did marry into other royal families around Europe, but as Dave Mac said, it helped to ensure the stability of Europe - plus they weren't allowed to marry 'commoners' so who were they supposed to marry?

And why can't someone with a German surname be British? Or, someone with an Indian or French surname. Many of us have surnames originally derived from foreign surnames, since as I said at the beginning, Britain has been settled by successive waves of immigrants since the end of the ice age.

I think myself, that our Queen does a marvellous job, and I just hope that whoever succeeds her manages to do as well. I should think that it's a really hard job, and I'd much rather be cleaning toilets and making beds etc. than try and do what she does.

The surname Windsor is such a con. I reckon it was picked out of The Big Book of British Sounding Last Names.
It was chosen quite deliberately, and bears no relation to any of their ancestry.

I hope you continue to enjoy funding the jollies that their extended family take at our expense.

In a last effort to pull this thread back into line...

I have no sympathy for any of them "losing" money on a chalet deposit, since it's the taxpayer that will be footing the bill. GBP30K would help very nicely with our mortgage bill.

It won't be my money anyway.

I don't earn enough to pay much tax. I should think the Royal Family probably get about enough out of me to buy themselves a piece of cake and a cup of tea each year, after my tax money has gone on defence, education, the NHS, social services, running 2 parliaments, prisons, etc. etc.

While neither especially 'pro' or 'anti' the Royal Family - I find them a bit farcical, if anything - do bear in mind that a good chunk of what constituted 'Crown' property was confiscated from the Catholic church by Henry VIII. George III gave up hereditary revenue from crown properties (to what is now the Crown Estate) in exchange for an annual payment; a pretty good deal for the taxpayer as Crown income was GBP190m in 2007. c.f. the GBP12m in the civil list. Which incidentally is less than social democrat Swedes fork out for their civil list.

Fully agree with Bandit on the Windsor thing; picked to play well with the locals by George (should that be Georg?) V.

On the Descent issue, they were an excellent company and founder Kit Harrison was a very decent guy. Perhaps we should be thinking about the employees they leave without a job.

I think the Royal Family probably picked Windsor because of Windsor Castle. Peerages often seem to have been given with place names rather than personal names, so I suppose there was a precedent for this. I know Field Marshall Lord Alanbrooke chose to keep his own name when he was created a baron, but I think this was unusual.

Other people with German names also changed theirs too, because of the First World War. Names like Schmidt changed to Smith.

I was sorry to hear about your job Tony, I hope the new one is better than the old one.

In a sense, we lost our jobs as well, when we had to give up dairying 8 years ago, because of the smash in the wholesale milk price. It's very hard, because you lose a sense of your own identity, as well as the financial loss. Instead of spending my days washing cows udders and shovelling cow muck, I now mow grass, make beds and clean toilets. But I do miss the cows.

I hope the ski employees find new jobs as well.

I have finally got around to checking the facts on taxpayers money and the Royal Family.
Apparently I wasn't far off with my estimate of a piece of cake and a cup of tea. According to the Telegraph (29th June 2009) they cost us GBP41.5 million last year, which is 69 pence per person in the U.K. So, since my husband and I both pay tax and we have 2 children who don't yet pay tax, that's GBP1-38 from each of us, assuming we are average taxpayers. This would just about buy the Royal Family a cup of tea and a piece of cake at a charity event. And I think this makes them very good value.

The only thing I know about the Duke of Edinburgh is that he is the Patron of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which my younger daughter is doing, and it seems to be an excellent thing. The children have to do voluntary work, learn a new skill, take part in sports, and go camping in the wilds without (much) adult assistance.

Indeed. Like mine. I didn't have any employees, but a lot of freelance contractors saw a line of business dry up because of two critical contracts being pulled.

As a young engineer, but one of, well, say, a wee bit of responsibilty, I was invited, "With your spouse, and any daughters younger tha 21 years old!", to a Royal Garden Party. (Just the once mind, once was enough for them!)

Well, I have sons, but no daughters, so off to the Palace we went, ski-wifie and I. Now, those of you who know me from J2, know that I don't do the important bits by half. Yes, I did wear a long coat, grey tie, and top hat. I had a premonition that it would be the one and only time, so best to do it right the first time.

Just as well. Hell, that wifie of mine, what a let-down she was. Oh yes, she was dressed to the nines, "You look lovely, dear".

What was the let down? Aye well, t'was the food. You see the royals don't eat muffins, barmcakes or rolls. Not French sticks, not semmels.

On offer was one inch square sandwiches. Judging by the amount on the table, I think that you were meant to take a couple of squares.

Thanks for clarifying, Tony,
I've been to one of those parties as well, and I thought it was kind of sweet of the Queen to invite a whole load of people she didn't know into her house and garden and give them tea, because she thought they deserved a treat.

I went over 30 years ago, and it was rather exciting then, because that was before they opened Buckingham Palace up to tourists, and it was a rare chance to get into the Palace (we walked through the Palace in order to get into the garden).

It was a bit like a village garden fete.

Gosh I must be really posh......I do use Waitrose burgers and oceans of Rose, anything those royals can do wickers can do better, I will invite you and your family to my next garden party and I will talk to you.....unfortunately for you :D :D :D

I throw lots of garden parties, I must be posh too Ian. Well if BBQ and booze up qualifies then I am posh. I love having people round when the weathers good, my garden is built around an entertaining garden, I love it especially as I dont do the cooking :lol:
