Ski show get together 21-25 October 2009

After not being able to make last years London ski show due track repairs on the East coast line and having to sit on a coach from Colchester to Liverpool Street, I decided it was not viable free tickets and all, so this year I am determined to make the show and what better way to enjoy it then to have a bit of a J2ski get together.
Anybody up for it ????? 8) 8)

I will be looking to go to the show again, and seeing as I was at the inaugural get together last year, I feel I should attend again.

No can do Saturday and Sunday is a waste of time usually. Its best to go in the week TBH. Get a business trip or take a day off.

And it's much cheaper at a fiver. Although I will probably be going on the Saturday which is 13 quid (no more hols left!)

I'll be there...it's only a half hour journey for me! The weekend would be better for me but I'm sure my lovely Head Teacher will let me have a week day off if I tell her it's the ski show and I have a chance of meeting Sir Admin! :wink: :lol:

Joaquin, their photos don't look the same. And I have skiied with two of the other three you mention. Very much looking forward to skiing with Wickers.

Admin, Ladies underwear sales. Sounds a good deal more interesting than engineering.... wonder if I could, errm maybe take a training course? Could start with Knicker module.

I am most definitely me. And anyway, it's generally pretty easy to identify someone's writing style.

Like, for example, if someone posing as me makes a bad spelling or grammatical error he/she is not me (unless I have a very bad case of flu or I get another of those really frightening letters from the taxman threatening me with penalties of GBP60 per day if I don't submit my tax return). Like that poor detective Monk, I simply can't survive knowing I have made a mistake, without correcting it. I also tend to write in essay style unless I'm in a dreadful hurry.

And, to bring the subject back to ski-ing - I think it's pretty easy to identify someone by their ski-ing style. The one going straight down the hill at a breakneck speed is probably my younger daughter, and the person going very carefully in neat little zig-zags is probably me.

There was a bar upstairs last year so I imagine the layout will be similar. It was overlooking the land rover "hill" and the ramp where the skiing and boarding took place, it was a good spot. Admin will give details I am sure in due course.

I'd love to be able to come along but having looked into the cost of getting there I'm not sure it would be worth while. I'd be looking at ~GBP250 at least just for transport (I can get us to the Alps for that :shock: !!), plus a hotel if we stopped over, which seems a lot for a day out.

Unless anyone has a cunning plan to get two people from the North East to London and back at a sensible price (driving is 5 hours each way so would need a stop over) I think we'll have to give it a miss this year (unless I can convince my OH that a short break in London would be a good idea to make the cost of transport seem a bit more in proportion - hmmm, might have to try that one.) :D

Well I was doing a bit of thinking the other day whilst talking to a friend, a strange occurrence I know, but I was thinking how will I recognise a J2skier at the show, there are some through Facebook photos who I could spot but others I wouldn't have the foggiest then I thought of a large sticky label with your J2 name on it........ so you will not only recognise me because of my "fat ugly face" but I will be waring a large label reading "Wickers", mainly for the reason that if you see me comming you could turn and run the other way :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Years ago I had to do a one day first aid course. When my company booked me in for the course they must have misheard my name. When I got there instead of being booked in as Rosemary I was booked in as Rodney. They had had badges made for all of us, and they were all in a tiz 'cos the only remaining badge said Rodney. So I just said I'll wear it all day just for peace and quiet. Unfortunately when I passed they issued the certificate to 'Rodney'. Muppets :lol:

The science and history museums are free although you probably need a whole day there but just a few hours is worth it.

Ok, so we have a date confirmed for the meet:

Thursday October 22nd 2009.

Can we confirm a time? I was going to suggest around 4pm but some people might be going before then, so maybe after lunch, around 2pm?

There is, of course, only 1 place for this meet to take place: at the Zillertaller Bar, where they will be serving one of my favourite beers fresh from the Ziller Valley.

For those of us stopping later into the evening, maybe a tea time beer meet up as well? My train home is at 8pm from Kings X if anyones up for a beer later on.

You certainly have an evident, ermm, condition, Nelly. Definitely needs attention, they may even prescribe the wearing of, say, a ski hat, and maybe recommend a visit to say, a ski show, where one can see a full range of therapeutic ski hats.

Its Ellis Brigham or Snow and Rock so its never cheap. Last year they didnt even so show prices either, so dont go expecting to find bargains. However, you might find stuff you wont be able to get anywhere else so if theres something specific you want which is hard to get hold of.....might be a good shout.

I was thinking maybe something unobtrusive like hat and goggles maybe? Might be easier than trudging around in a pair of skis....

I won't be able to take part in this! For for the first time in ages I'm going out on a Thursday night, I'll have approximately an hour to get in the loft to find my gear, get it all on, take a photo, explain to my OH what to do....I don't think so.

Snowfall looks tempting already so also thinking about a cheap pre-Xmas jaunt to Mayrhofen. Is the ski show good for special deals ?

I am going for a walk round to see whats new this season, to pick lots of brochures for business purposes, to meet several old contacts to talk about their brochures with, to pick up some more info on ADH and Serre Che, and then to haved A COUPLE of drinks and say hello to some of the J2ski crowd.

I always find that after the ski show I really start pining for the mountains...

I'm going to the show on Wednesday and then a group of us are getting together afterwards in central London for a beer and to finalise our ski plans for a trip to Meribel 6th March. All solo skiers wanting to join a crowd in a chalet. Everyone welcome. We're booking on Thursday after the meetup. Meeting 7.30pm in upstairs bar at Le Pain Quotidien in Covent Garden Piazza. Look up www.lepainquotidien.co.uk for directions. Fourteen definites so far, all intermediate to advanced skiers. Looking to make chalet up to 20 to get a good deal. The chalet tells me it is unlimited wine with dinner until coffee is served - ie the usual chalet format. Regarding the fire place, yes there is one but one of the guys on the trip tells me he'll ski your boots off so there won't be anything left to burn!

Yes you can organise your own travel - so far we have people on Manchester, Stansted and Gatwick flights plus Eurostar One is on the sleeper coach to get two extra days skiing. Tony will be there from 3 or 4 and leaving at 7. Snowbandit will be there at 4, or maybe 2... and I'll be somewhere around from midday...

Soooo... how about a 14:00 after lunch coffee (and/or schnapps) and a 16:00 afternoon tea (or beer, just possibly) with retail therapy in between for those with eager wallets? (was there today and there did appear to be a couple of racks of, presumably, last year's gear on sale at S&R).

p.s. for those with freebies; the folk on the door are being quite strict about making sure you've filled in your name and address on the back so they can "keep you informed".

I certainly would not recommend using a made-up or silly name; that would be just so wrong and you might get into trouble.

Besides which if you get there after midday you might find that Fred Flintstone, Elvis and Attila the Hun are already in the building...

I dont know where the bar is, but if thats where you say it is, then thats the one to aim for.

I am arriving at around 1.30ish depending on the mornings work and the trains into town. I intend to mosey around for a couple of hours, pick up some brochures and see a few business contacts, and collect some stuff from the ADH and Serre Che stands, and then have a quick half with some of you at around 4 before going to window shop around.

We're back home now, all tortoises are bathed fed and in bed! lol

We had a fab time, j2ski nutters are well cool, even the one from Norfolk!

I'm sooooooo pleased with myself for not giving into temptation and buying new ski boots just because they glistened. :lol:

Evening, well thats me through the door with a nice cup of tea. Wickers and Admin left us at about 6.30, so it was me, Snowbandit and Scapula left holding the beers, I mean fort.

Pleasant day, although I was somewhat disappoined by the show. I guess 3 years running and it wears a little thin. Plenty of gear on sale if you are looking but no really good bargains. S&R and EB continue to churn out designer stuff at high prices.

The Zillertaller Bar should be closed due to trading standards. There was no Zillertaller beer, instead we had to put up with Carlsberg Export and about GBP1000 a bottle. Rubbish.

However, the up side of it all was meeting up with some super people:
Admin Dave as chirpy and kind as ever, top bloke he is. I would like to ski with him sometime.
Wickers was very well behaved I might add. Another top geezer indeed, always got a laugh and a one liner.
Bandit as knowledgeable and warm hearted as usual, always got some advice to give and experience to share. She is a real diamond.
Snowbandit and Scapula, proper sarf Landoners and full of smiles and funny stories, and possibly the only person in the world I have ever come across who posts on a Tortoise Forum. We need to find the URL for this, trust me, it sounds amazing.....
And MFC and his lovely lady who came down for a couple of days and must have cleared his bank account out judging by the number of bags Mrs MFC was carrying as they disappeared to get their train home. I reckon these 2 would be a right giggle on a ski holiday.

Very nice to meet you all, and I hope everyone has a cracking season 2009/10.

Oh, I didn't buy those Scott Neo's in the end. But I am going to keep in touch with the lady selling them just in case......

G/friend has rang me to say she has tried her salo's & jacket on again from Snow & expensive :evil: thats 3 pairs shes got now. Still not checked my bank account.

Bought some sun glasses and some goggles for myself. 1 pair of smartwool socks for GBP18:99 i think. I really dont need 3 pairs as my feet arnt to pongy so thats a saving of GBP37.98 :mrgreen:

Very dissapointed with the show if honest. Dont know what i expected but not some plank trying to sell me gas or elecy. Alot of the big stores there but not to much of the smaller shops around. Didnt see any bargins :cry: Had a look at some skis but will probably do some homework 1st then get some, some time later.

Wasnt there when you were all talking about tortoises as i was at the bar looking at you all thinking is that them! Weird really as you all looked fatter in your pictures not obese fat just bigger. My better half says " arnt they nice" god bless if she only knew.

Haha. Not quite sure what you mean about looking bigger in pictures, but with the "you look younger in the flesh" comment from Snowbandit, I'll take it as a compliment!

The flyer I gave to Wickers was a piste map of Mayrhofen...!!!!

I am now having 2nd thoughts about those skis though, and have subsequently put my 2 current pairs on ebay to see if they go for enough to enable me to fund said potential purchase. I am keeping quite about what they are and where they are from though, as there is only 1 pair left and I dont want anyone else getting them 8)

Your other half must have extremely good taste, yes it was great to meet the guys and girls and it really does make you wonder if a J2ski trip could be on the cards for the future, it great that every one got on and I had a good time just shame about the beer really , I don't really get out much :oops:
But I can sense that the one pair of socks per ski week is building, its really strange the amount of people who don't wash their feet :wink:

Catered chalet in the Dolomites should suit everyones needs, or maybe we should hit Zermatt as thats on everyones list?

I miss it too. I was just looking for a photo of me with taken in Livignio a few years ago with a stupid (it's actually my favourite) hat on, makes me look like a proper cone head. Has a very large pompom on top. I'll keep looking.

Now then, I hve been this and was gonna suggest it but was too lazy. I do you a deal, if you guys come up with a date then I'll organise accommodation and passes. I don't speak jive but I do speak a little German. Zermatt will be honoured to be aligned with such a website and I'm sure with a little sales from Admin we could negotiate a reasonably affordable few day drinking, I mean sliding.

I was thinking some business terms that Admin might help us with and benifit from. The bigger the business the more attractive it may be for them. In which case I would suggest a hotel with affilates. You could go the other direction to a private chalet with much the same effect. No TO to be involved, why use a middleman?

We might do better getting hold of a big enough apartment for a week, then folks can make their own way there.
I'm not convinced that we have enough mass (as yet) to pull much of a discount with the Tourist Office, even if Admin was on board. One other factor to consider is if this does gather momentum, it will be logistically challenging. One glance at the pages of Snowheads events will tell you why, if you are in any doubt!

It is a very new image you have....all shiny for this weekend :lol:

For Zermatt I think catered chalet would have to be the way as it would mean a known budget with just lunches to buy. I also could probably only afford Zermatt if I went catered, and a deal for Jan could be had for around GBP500pp inc flights. 1 in 8 go free with some TO's.

I love a challenge and this could be of the military operation kind. Am definately up for a J2ski, erm, ski.

What we need, in an ideal world, is a catered chalet that is independent, or would be willing to accommodate us by getting there individually.

If we are definately looking at Zermatt (and I think we should stick with that otherwise we'll be here until the next ice age deciding), then we should perhaps hunt down private accommodation so we can all make our own way there.

Just noticed that there's a Zermatt thread now so will hop over there.

Any pics from your get together being posted ? (Or were they over-exposed).

Also whats your feedback on the show. Went today and enjoyed it.

- Absence of Inghams and Crystal seems odd.
- Few special holiday bargains to tempt the impulse buy
- Thought Italy and Spain stalls were well presented but Jungfrau has got my holiday vote this time
- Need some adult sized ice skating penguins!

Didn't get all of us, Bandit was buying a hat, mfc's girlfriend was at the bar and I was taking the photo, but everyone else is there I think...

I must have been at the bar when that one was taken....

I went back to the show yesterday (Sunday) as I had a spare ticket, and blagged Mrs H in for GBP4. It was absolutely packed, uncomfortably so. People walking into you, no room to look at anything, horrible.

I did manage to fill in the rest of the competitions to win a free holiday that I missed before, and Mrs H got a nice Oakly fleece. Sadly the Neo's have been sold, and I am halfway through my ebay auction to get rid of my own skis already.... :cry:

Oakley's stand was the place for bargains. Everything was reduced between 30 and 50%, including some very nice goggles and glasses.
The only other place with really good deals was, surprisingly, the Trespass stand. Everything was 50% off marked prices. For example, a standard 1/4 zip fleece was GBP14.95, so available at GBP7.50.
Some of the new range of jcakets they have for this season are a massive improvement on previous stuff. There was a nice sky/turquoise/white ladies jacket for GBP80 which would have been GBP40, ideal for first timers or someone looking for a 2nd jacket cheap.
They also had a really nice softshell for GBP75 (GBP37.50) with a hood, thats a really good deal.

S&R and EB were offering NOTHING at all as a discount off anything, although S&R had a sale rail. All I could see were odd sized Kjus jackets at GBP400 with 30% off - good if it was your size and you had that kind of money to spend on a jacket I guess.

I ended up going to TK Maxx at Hammersmith and getting 4 pairs of Merino Wool ski socks for GBP17.

As for the show itself, overall its great just to get in the ski mood, but I did find it a little tired as previously mentioned, maybe its because I have been 3 years in a row now. However, its something I look forward to on the calendar as it makes me realise how close to going away we are getting, and its always nice to meet the people actually from the resorts you are either going to or have thought about visiting.

Formigal is now on my radar, big time.

Just been going through the brochures and leaflets I picked up a The Show on the Friday.

Did anybody come across the Raxski stand - skis chopped off behind the bindings and replaced by 3 vertical fins for turning and stopping !!

They have to be seen to be believed - see raxski.com

Surely they will never catch on !

MMmm I saw their stand whilst on a coffee break but never went to have a look, I'll have a closer look at their web site
