Speeding in Switzerland

Hi all,

This is kind of on topic because lots of us drive when going skiing even if only in hire cars from the airport.

Anyway, yesterday I got a letter (in French so I don't fully understand it yet) telling me i was caught on camera speeding on a Swiss motorway (Geneva to Zermatt). The offense was in March 08 yes 08. There were two of us in the car and we were both insured to drive and did take turns so who knows who was driving!

Does anyone have experience of this? I have a feeling if I don't own up and pay up I will get arrested next time I go through Geneva airport which happens to be in two weeks time.

Any ideas?

Not sure what the Swiss laws are like, but in the UK you are entitled to ask for evidence of who was driving. If they cant show it to you, you dont have to own up over here.

Re:Speeding in Switzerland

Mike,
I don't really know anything about this subject at all, but here are my thoughts on it.

I suppose you could contact someone like the AA, even if you don't belong, and ask them, or the Citizens Advice Bureau, or the car hire firm, to check on the regulations.

How much is the fine? If it's not too much, and you're sure it's genuine, you could just pay it. I daresay, if you were taking it in turns driving, you were probably both speeding, and you were lucky enough to only get caught once! But I don't suppose whoever you were driving with, would be prepared to pay half the fine, unless they're a particularly good friend.

In any case, if it was me, I'd check the regulations first (and get the French properly translated!). It might turn out, for example, that they can't prove it was you but if you pay then you are admitting liability and they might do something else to you as well.

Ally

Some interesting info here:

http://www.englishforum.ch/transportation-driving/1446-how-do-speeding-fines-work-switzerland.html

I worked in Valais for many years but was lucky not to have been caught speeding. My experience with the Swiss police/authorities suggests not to get on the wrong side of them if at all possible. Is it worth all the worry not to pay the fine?

Re:Speeding in Switzerland

Two years ago, I received a letter from the police in Kitsbuhle, stating I had been caught on camera when entering Fieberbrun. I actually remembered seeing the two cops with a radar gun, but hadn't thought I was speeding. We are only talking about 55/50 kph.

I was so proud of getting this fine, I gave my son the gelt, 24 euros. He was heading off to Halstadt for a summer walking holiday, and he duly paid my fine.

Re:Speeding in Switzerland

The authorities have your UK address. You will have been given a date by which you should pay the fine. If you ignore it, you will incur interest and an outstanding judgement will be entered against your name, along with the amount unpaid. Last time I enetered GVA all passports from non Schengen arrivals were being checked on computer lists. You would probably get in by road crossing okay. In Switzerland traffic speeding fines do not add up to points on your licence (generally).

In these days of all paperwork being computer generated, you would think they would have an English version of the letter to send to a UK address  (especially given our pechant for foreign languages)

Trencher

I'd be careful with this one as the bas*ards, sorry Swiss border guards again decided to stop and search my car just over a week ago , not just happy with that they then took both parts of my driving license and ran a search on it, now they might have just taken it away and had a cup of tea and brought it back, but knowing the Swiss they would have ran a check. So if you intend to return to the land of the incredibly rude swiss border control persons I'd consider paying the fine.

Which crossing were you at Wickers? You do know they have no sense of humour by now, and they have guns  Did you have a Vignette?

Post Schengen, British tourists are now the outsiders in western Europe. Switzerland is not an EU country, but has joined Schengen. We should all expect more of the same, unfortunately.

Re:Speeding in Switzerland

BTW to Mike 3000, our household does have direct experience of Swiss speeding fines, and we paid up. It's a sport for the swiss citizen, radio stations give out locations of GATSO style cameras and the mobile speed guns, but it's illegal to have a GPS database of camera locations on your Sat Nav in Switzerland, so take care if you have one.

I am very polite when I visit other countries and I would expect the same respect back as I give out, now I have to be fair that this guy was not particularly rude but he was on a mission not happy on just searching my car and bags the license check was just taking it too far. I was not using the motorways so I did not require a Vignette but purchased one when I entered back into Switzerland on the home leg of our journey, we entered at Tirano and was then gonna travel a few miles into Switzerland and then back into Italy at the Forcola pass and then onto Livigno, all of which was explained at the border post.
Again if Switzerland are gonna make my family and I unwelcome in their country I just will not travel though or holiday again in Switzerland, by the way at Le Grand st Bernard pass border point about five years ago I was asked many unnecessary questions before I could enter Switzerland and all the time the kn*b had his hand rested on his gun, obviously in an attempt to unnerve, it is just totally unacceptable for Border officers to behave in this way.

Anybody unaware of the schengen treaty here is a link.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement

Re:Speeding in Switzerland

Back to the speeding question, though i do have my own experiences of the Swiss way of dealing with the public....

I have read through a google search that if you were more than 30kph over the limit they can fine you 20% of your net income.

If it was a matter of paying GBP100 I would pay up and take it on the chin but 20% of net income?

Typically the speeding fine letter will contain 2 elements. 1st a charge notice from your hire company to you, for them taking the time to tell the Swiss police how to find you  . Secondly there is usually what looks like a bank slip, in orange or red, and this will have the price of your fine on it.

Re:Speeding in Switzerland

Ian,
I'm afraid that doesn't make sense, unless you're assuming that YOUR speedo is the only one that's not inaccurate at all.

I asked our local police force - Dyfed Powys Police - about their tolerances on speeding, and they said their cameras are set to 10% plus 2 mph, but an individual policeman with a 'gun' can book you for doing only 2 mph over the limit, and that different police forces have different tolerances, so you'd have to know what these were for each area, and where the boundaries were.

I am very careful not to speed, ever, and the only time I do it is when I've accidentally got confused because the limits keep changing on the same piece of road, but I've never been caught - yet!

Ally

Re:Speeding in Switzerland

I would think even a sat nav system wouldn't be totally accurate if you were going up and down hills (or mountains) because the mapping must be only 2-D.

So I rather think that means you'd be going faster than your sat nav system said, in the mountains, because you'd be travelling a greater distance, something like the hypotenuse on a triangle, and speed equals distance over time. But I've always been very bad at maths so I'd have to think about it.

I have noticed that my new Tom Tom says I'm going about 2 mph slower than I'd estimate using my speedo, on the flat. And I have a newish car (4 years old).

Ally

Wickers, does your Tom Tom have a speed cameras database?

We use a Blaupunkt Sat Nav, plus a couple of InfoRad's. Between them, they get most of the fixed stuff. Naturally, a little creativity is needed for Switzerland :D We don't go fast, but particularly in Switzerland it's often hard to tell what the speed limit is on the motorway, as it's constantly changing. Swiss Border police will confiscate Sat Nav's with camera databases or GPS based camera detectors

Yep, mine has a speed camera database and he ( The jobs worth border guard ) at least was not interested in that, I guess it could have been very embarrassing for him if he was seen to not be able to get me on anything apart from having a speed camera database. I might even have been able to do him for harassment
