Any help would be appreciated.

My wife and I are trying to combine a Christmas ski holiday with a honeymoon.
We are looking to spend maybe 65% of the fortnight skiing.
We have been to Banff and Whistler before and love the idea of a village/township for Christmas, New Years Eve and restaurants etc…rather than mountain seclusion.
Somewhere with intermediate slopes but more so - nice lodging(s), tasteful furnishings and perhaps a fire. Priorty (as it is our honeymoon) is a nice room, either rustic or modern. Somewhere like Rocks resort Laax or Adara hotel Whistler and definitely not like the vast majorities that have bedding and drapes like a 40 year old floral tea cozy. Doesn't have to be flash - just Simple and not grandma!
We live in Western Australia so Europe is as easy as the Americas. Budget is moderate but unfortunately not $600 a night. Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Kevin Fowkes
I agree on Lech ,and would also suggest Zermatt for it's amazing scenery. It's a big village, so there is plenty of choice of accommodation.

Your destination resort is your honeymoon, so it ought to be in a stunning, memorable setting, where better than the Matterhorn :D

Have you considered any of The Lapland resorts, most romantic place I know. But unfortunately pricey at that time of year.

Re:Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Kevin,

I would first of all reinforce Bandit's suggestion of Zermatt. Providing you have a balcony view of the Matterhorn, in my opinion, it is the most stunning view in the world of skiing. Having said that, I still have two or three big places to go at. 8)

The downside is that because you are visiting in December, there is limited daytime for enjoying this most spectacular of views.

The second suggestion would be to consider Klosters. My reason for this is that the room seems to be important to you. There are some beautiful properties there.

The same applies to Vail, Colorado, some great condos.

But for the last two, you will have to pay serious dollars at Xmas/New Year.

In Europe, Christmas is a bit costly, New year, much more so.
Good Luck

I will recommend Zermatt too, I will definitely be back as unfortunately only managed to visit for the weekend!

Trip advisor has most of the hotels reviewed on their website and usually the average nightly charge. May be worth a look... Make sure you check out the piano playing man in Grampis ;)

Hi Pablo
At the moment I have done all the research but if I came across a good package I would grab it.
I am slowly becoming disheartened to be honest.
Have spent weeks before I posted 'help' on this site.
Because we need ski hire as well as clothes hire (i mean All clothes... it can be 40+ degrees C in Western Australia at Christmas and i dont even own a coat let alone a jacket) it makes the whole trip very expensive - even for a honeymoon.
After the above and flights and lift pass I think we would be maxing at $375AUD a night (room not pp). and for the style we would like...not a chance in hell.
I'm putting extra on the lottery tomorrow - if all goes well i'll be booking hotel nevai or raffl's st antonerhof.

Have you thought about getting a nice limo or sedan to take you guys to whistler and back? I've done it last year and I booked with "Classic Limousine" -- their chauffeurs were really kind to my group and I, helping us with our luggage and stuff. Limousines are definitely the best way to travel! :D

Gridelwald in Switzerland, was there this Christmas. You will definately get good accommodation for $300 as you suggest, easy to get to, huge history, postcard town and views that match the Matterhorn at Zermatt. Cost of food and drink etc is far cheaper than Zermatt also.

Waking up to a floor to ceiling view of the Eiger on Christmas day was a wonderful experience! My accomodation was lovely and only Euro70 a night.

Just checking out Grindlewald/Wengen/Murren. I guess that you booked independantly. What was your source of info? Had thought of Wengen becae you can go left to Grindle or Right to Murren. Would prefer Grindlewald though, sounds so historic, I can see the painting emerging already!

Are the three places connected slope-wise?

Re:Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, I booked independantly, only ever booked through an agent twice, one being for Chile.

All 3 are linked by the lift and train system I think, was only there for 3 days so didn't do it all. It is wierd doing a I'm run having a beer and getting the train back up! Some of the lifts are very long. It's a proper skiing resort, not brilliant for boarders, but the scenery is awesome. Did both Grindelwald and Zermatt this season, enjoyed the boarding in Zermatt more but was dumbfounded by the Eiger, so Gtindelwald pips it for me.

It's really somewhere all skiier should go once.

Yes, I agree with you about everyone should going to Grindlewald once, feel the same about Zermatt and Saas-Fee, in Switzerland.

So, for you, was Grindlewald preferable to Wengen or Murren? I am thinking particularly of the views.
