Anyone booked for next season yet?

Just thought I'd pop in and say 'hi' having not posted for a while.

I'm sure lot's of you are already booked and waiting impatiently for the winter, so I thought I'd ask you all where you're going.

I haven't booked yet but am hoping 'still' to go to Livigno, Italy for the New Year.

Hi Snow already booked months ago, infact the day we got back. Off to Ruka for a week then moving on to Yllas and hopefully make it to Sweden.

Hi Rose, I would have booked the day after but need to book with all the others really. Our group gets bigger and bigger each year. On top of that I've spent loads of money on my tortoises recently so now need to tighten my belt so that I can book in the next two months. :lol:

I booked early and got an early discount then a little while ago they advertised a double discount weekend, I pleaded and they gave me the extra discount as well.

well the credit crunch has crunched and I am looking at value skiing at the moment...2 weeks instead of 2x1 ...looking at Limone in Jan as I think they will be offering inclusive lift passes and offers on single rooms as well as reasonable transfers...90km piste and not far from Prato if I want a change....I will save for something more serious for the spring......

Yep, eight of us are going to Soll, Austria in Jan '10. Haven't been on a group ski trip before so should be interesting! :-)

If you are really worried about the lack of motorway mileage skiing, your nearest hop in points are Tignes Les Brevieres, for Espace Killy, and Le Pre, Villaroger, for Paradiski.

Ste Foy is known as a favourite destination for locals who wish to avoid the crowds )

8 of us got a chalet booked in Alpe d'Huez 2nd week in Jan 2010, but nothing else confirmed yet. Rocket Ski have pulled out of Schladming and Folgarida, so thats 2 of my planned trips up the swanny.
I think I am going to wait and get something right at the last minute once I know what the snow is like around Europe when I take the time off.
Still very keen on Solden and Ischgl but in the current climate, they might have to wait a year or 2.

Tony - Schladming and Folgarida are still on the Equity Ski website - could you not switch your Rocket Ski plans through Equity or won't they let you do that? Great shame if not as we have had some fantastic ski hols in both those resorts.
Dare I ask about the job situation? Forgive me if you have talked about it somewhere else in the forum, but I am out of touch due to recent house move.

24 of us booked to go to Arabba in March. Still considering other options like Obergurgl at the end of November (if it's open?) for four nights and/or somewhere for new year...

Unfortunately they still show on the website but they no longer go to these resorts. In fact, they are now very limited to what they can offer, as they have focused on the school group market this coming season.
As for work, its been a nightmare last 15 months or so, having been made redundant a month before Xmas, the company I subsequently joined went into administration at the end of May, so no one got paid and I had to find another job. Luckily, I worked 2 weeks with my new employer before I went to Greece, and its a case of fingers crossed that it works out with the new company, although the print industry in general is on its knees so who knows, but thanks for asking.

La Tania first week in Jan with kids and better half.

Selva in March with 9 friends.

Depending how much better half spends on the wedding in May we may, just may get another trip away but it would have to be cheap and very last minute!

Cant wait hay fever is the pits this year!

Boyz (6 of us) off to Sans Sicario Italy 24th Jan and better half and me back to Killington US of A 10th Feb (she loved her first week of skiing that she was so keen to go again she even took 3 days unpaid holiday before the half term!!).

Its only 6 months to xmas.... so not much longer after that til first trip!!! wishing the summer away haha.

The Planabel is fine never actual stayed there but we used it for after dinner drinks a couple of times , very cosmopolitan 8)

Glad to hear that lots of people are getting booked up and looking forward to next season. I've spent hours pouring over the brochures, but daren't book anything yet as my funding runs out at the end of October and as yet, I haven't managed to find a job (which is really scary.) :(

I've applied for a couple with no success, but there is virtually nothing about at the moment. I'm pinning my hopes on something that isn't even advertised yet, which is a project that looks amazing and I'm really excited about. It also has the advantage of collaborations in the States, one of which is within reach of a number of ski resorts.... Fingers crossed.... )

Thanks Bandit - the chalet runs folks across to those places if they want to, I think, but what you say above is what I hear - less busy=less queues=people visiting Val etc for the day then being glad to be back in Foy...

Probably from Ashford by Eurostar, generally I think its cheaper if you book through a TO, although they do add a supplement for going by train which makes it more expensive than flying. You'd think they'd encourage people to use trains more than flying, clearly the environment isn't top of their list.

Just booked flights from Dublin to Milan on Dec 17th till 22nd for 58 euros return! Bargin :D
Not sure where were gonna go but there is loads of high skiing within a couple of hours so we should be sorted. Cant wait as it will be 20 months since my last skiing and first after knee opp.

I've now booked Obergurgl at new year for some much needed comfort blanket skiing.
173 days to Obergurgl
263 days to Arabba

Nice one Caron. Arabba will be special. If my memory serves me right, you have been to Obergurgl before, so you might be able to see more of the place now that you have progressed since those days.

Now then, if anyone is looking for a really good deal to Alpe d'Huez on 9th Jan next year in a catered chalet, let me know before 17th July as the last 4 places in our chalet are up for grabs at GBP365pp including flights and transfers, and they are doing 2-4-1 lift passes until 17/7.

Drop me a PM if you are interested.

Caron you'll love arabba, make sure to get up to marmolada, fairly easy from arabba, the views everywhere in the dolomites are amazing!

The Snow Train isn't going to be operating next winter due to the recession...

There are a range of alternative options to get you to the French Alps by rail.

Either you can travel on the Eurostar Direct Ski train which runs convenient weekly services by day or overnight from London St Pancras or Ashford International stations direct to 3 stations in the French Alps.

I just wrote a long message about our holiday, and the website swallowed it instead of posting it up!

Summary is we have booked for Feb half-term (13th) to P & V apartment in Courchevel on Eurostar ski train. Train tickets became available on Tuesday, but were expensive, GBP300 each return. Apartment was 1000 euros for 4 people.

Yes, it was my first skiing trip and where I fell in love with the sport so I'm thinking it'll be a great boost after the slush of Tignes. There's a couple of slopes that I remember vividly being really pushed with, so I reckon going down them with relative ease this time will do me the world of good.
It's my 40th bday pressie (final invoice due 3 days after my birthday) so I plan to have a ball whatever! (Who needs diamonds?!)

Hi Ally
We're staying in the same Esprit chalet that we stayed in the last time, right next to the tow rope that pulls you up to the slope that you ski down to the Festkog-thingy lift.
We've got a huge south facing balcony which we're excited about - last time we were stuck on the ground floor at the back, every day we'd ski home down the road towards our chalet mates sitting on their balconies with a glass of wine in their hand and their feet up :evil:.
Can't wait!!!

When you've got kids on their first ski holiday in afternoon ski school and you pick them up tired, cold and hungry, you tend to head back for the lovely cake the chalet staff have baked for you rather than stay out until the last lift and put them off forever :?

Maybe now they're a bit older...

Maybe now theyre a bit older.......you can all ski off the last run together, and then hit the local bar for a couple of pints, let the kids have a sneaky Jaegermeister, and return to the chalet to havet that glass of wine WHILST SITTING IN THE JACUZZI ON THE BALCONY AT 10pm and not when its ski time!!!

Up until now I think I've been considerate in letting the likes of you have some slope time to yourself, surely you don't want to encourage everyone to catch the last lift :shock: ?

The only time I've ever caught the last lift home I was terrified in case it was shut, and we were stuck out on the mountain all night. It was a red run down, and I really didn't want to attempt it when I'd never done it before, and I wasn't sure which way to go. In fact, the lift was shut really, but because we wanted to go down, they very kindly allowed us on.

If it was me, I'd head home early to make sure I caught the lift and got some cake before everyone else scoffed it all.

I forgot to say that it sounds as though your chalet is across the road from the Crystal hotel. We used to use that funny short drag lift to get high enough to ski down to the road, and then walk over the road to the hotel.

I'm sure you'll have a great time. If you're anything like me, it's the waiting now that's hard to bear.

I have developed a habit of catching the last lift up, buying a gluwein, and getting the last of the rays over the Kitsbuhler Alps.

In my first season in Niederau, was up the mountain late, started off from the top,when one toe binding pulled out of the ski. Trudged back up to the hotel, borrowed tools, and did a fix.

Set off again. After two hundred metres, off came the bindng.

By this time it was dark, so it was an interesting journey, one ski over my shoulder, sticks working overtime!

I'm new here but you guys seem to know your way around Europe. My buddy and I are making this trip across Eurasia which includes about 15 countries. If you are around when we are we would love it if you rode with us. the trip will be professionally filmed and all so it should be a blast.

I didn't even know it WAS possible to ski in Japan. What's so special about ski-ing in Japan?

In fact I thought Japan was a series of islands - ski-ing linked by gondolas from one island to another?

Well now that I'm back from sunny Cornwall (9 days on the beach - thanks Jim for the sunshine!) its time to book skiing. Planning on going to Val Disere on 23rd Jan for a week. How many sleeps is that?

I am booked for a week in Saalbach Hinterglemm in mid-December, planning a long weekend at the Hintertux in October, looking at Grindelwald for a few days at Christmas again and trying to decide between Saas Fee and Zermatt for New Year. Might be off to Singapore with work in Feb, in which case I will aim for a week in Japan as a stop off.

Actually, I spent a good few hours this weekend with a map, calender and my crayons attempting to figure out how and where I could get 45 days out the season :)

Hi all

I'm a nooby to the forum so the last few weeks iv been reading up on all the information you have to offer.

I've just booked a week at baqueira-beret late jan ,not sure what to expect but from the videos on you tube I'm sure me and a few friends will have a great time . i wasn't looking forward to the 200 mile drive from Barcelona but the lads are looking at it as a mini road trip and think it'll be fun :shock:

I am in the middle of a complex dilemma but trying to ignore it all for the minute as it makes me realise my round the world trip is coming to an end. :cry:

It basically boils down to whether I am sensible or not - Do I be sensible and accept my old job back and just do a few weeks skiing in Canada or do I do a full season working as an instructor in Canada?

The major dilemma being I may not have a job to come back to if I do a full season......

Canada is not the issue nor is going skiing its just for how long! :-D

Brimster, this is a no-brainer. Are you likely to get an opportunity like that again? Way back, when I was doing something a bit similar to you, was travelling roud the outback in a ford transit, with two pairs of skis strapped up to the van ceiling, and surrounded by kangeroos, emus and snakes. Plan was to drive/work our way around aussie, and end up with a season skiing. Then go to NewZealand buy a couple of horses, and ride down through the north and south island, before flying to the USA west coast, and crossing the USA by cheap ticket Greyhound. Due to illness, it didn't work out.

There are times when common sense applies, and you are not in one of those times. Make dreams, and follow them. You will easily get a job when you get back.

As I now have a fantastic new job to look forward to, I'm finally in a position to book next year's trip(s). :D

Having spent ages looking on the net at just about every resort under the sun, I think we have almost decided on Arabba for a week in January. The reports on various threads have been really helpful so thanks to everyone who has written and posted photos. Our preferred accommodation is Chalet Brigitta so if anyone has stayed here any information would be appreciated.

My next problem is deciding where to go for a second week in March as I have such a long list of places I want to try!

Hi Mekka and welcome to J2ski 8) . I've been to Bardonecchia and really enjoyed my stay there. It was many years ago, and the resort has benefited from modernisation as a site for the Winter Olympics since then.

I have been thinking about my plans today, BA are looking like GBP97.70 gatwick to salzburg. This is a bit of a pain from my location 20 minutes past bristol but the next cheapest you're looking at GBP180+ for a local flight! Thinking of baseing ourself in flachau we're me and a friend can get an room for 20e's a night, then exploring the salzburger sportwelt region properly as we only got to the wagrain area last winter with school!

Excellent choice Lynn. I tried to book it for 8 of us in Jan 2009 but it was full up and apparently this chalet is nearly always booked out for the majority of the season very quickly.
I guess you are booking through Neilson? In which case you will find the chalet offers the Super Service with enhanced meals, better drinks, and one or two extra little touches. Its in a great spot, and all rooms are ensuite.
I hope you really enjoy it, and come back to tell us how good the place is, as it is somewhere I really want to go to, that chalet in particular.
The one mentioned next door to it, Chalet Belvedere, is literally attached to it, but doesnt have quite the same high standards.

Have finally booked for a week on the 9th January (can't wait!) I'll take loads of photos and report back for you, Tony and anyone else considering this for future trips.

The only thing that concerns me slightly is the 3 ½ - 4 hour transfer to the resort as I don't travel too well on a coach. Can anyone recommend any decent travel sickness pills that are non-drowsy? :cry:

Chalet Brigitta in Arabba. The ski area looks fantastic as does the chalet, with all the extra touches. You mentioned in an earlier post that it was somewhere you'd considered but it was fully booked.

Not sure that water and looking out of a window will work for me, but even if it doesn't, I think a few hours of misery on a coach will be more than compensated for by a week on skis :D

I dont think the transfer is as long as that though, and its motorway all the way to Bolzano.

I'll make a note of those too I think. My eldest is sick on the bus nearly every skiing trip, there and back. But, seeing as I've held his hand every time up until now, I think it's time to let the other half have a go :twisted:

Unfortunately all travel sickness pills have a drowsy effect. But Stugeron is the least likely to cause severe drowsiness. You could try travel bands, or health food shops sell ginger sweets etc. Now recommended for all types of sickness, even morning sickness.

We have played Golf over the nursery slopes in Megeve a couple of weeks ago and hope to get another round in October. We will be in St Gervais over the New Year and hope to get several free days skiing further a field included in this years season's pass, the application form has arrived this week in the post :-)even with 20% off it still stings a bit. :cry: We have booked to fly, get an airport Transfer, the next time we will drive, another time we will fly, hire a car at Geneva depending on who is coming with us. We fly from Manchester, East midlands, or Liverpool depending which is the cheaper, dont think we have flown from Doncaster for a while.

I've been quiet on the forum but busy with the bookings, decided to have very much an Austrian season, Starting with 4 days in Kaprun in early December, a week in Zell am See in January followed by a few days in Bad Kleinkirchheim, then we go to a part of northeren Italy (which used to be Austria before WW1) in February. Still to decide on March, but will hopefully be back in Austria then to. Just got fed up with rip of French resorts and other than Switzerland (had a fantastic time in Flumserberg last December) nowhere else has tempted me yet....

Finaly starting to get sorted.
Been offered 2 weeks guiding in Tonnale over Crimbo.
Need to confirm 2 weeks teaching Half Term and Easter and just booked an Apartment in Avoriaz for 20th of March. GBP250 for the week bettween 3 of us result.
Had a slide at Chillfactor last week with some ski mates who i havent seen for a few years so its all starting to get exciting. Whoop Whoop

I'm about to book my holiday in the next couple of days. Going to go on the Uni trip to Val Thorens dec 12th-19th! Works out at less then GBP500 a self catering apartment inc skis and lift passes etc! Only downside is its coach travel :(
On a different note, off to Gloucester Ski Slope this afternoon with uni for some race training! :D

Are you unattached......I am not particularly impressed by the breathing underwater or the flying, but the immense fortune is definitely of interest!

I'm not sure if it will be to be honest, but Zermatt does start operating more lifts this weekend, and Cervinia is running also for this and two weekends before it opens proper. Been 20 cm of snow in the last 24 hours or so, at least it will put some icing on the glacier.

The view at the top of the KM is so very tempting. I lost a test ski (faulty brakes) up there last year. I watched it head off into the pow. I let it go, there was no way I would step beyond the rope with 1 ski on, the crevasses are rather deep!

I hope the lift co. don't groom all the new pow, soft and fluffy is so much nicer :D

The loose ski made it's own way back to the piste area, and was handed in at the test centre.

One of the most tempting sights I've seen is the glacier fields falling from the Jungfraujoch miles and miles of relatively shallow white. Quite a fe big blue and black holes mind ;)

sitting in the Brown Cow, just had a Burger and a couple of Weissbier, gonna give Marco's musical entertainment a blast at Grampi's in a moment. Note to Pabs, he must play every night of the soddin' year!

Update from The Kleine Matterhorn.

Piste Quality: hard pack with 15-20cm ungroomed new snow.
Weather: clear first thing, thick cloud now with intermittent snow showers.
Beer: tell you in 20 minutes

Very busy up here, but worth it, tiring on a snowboard when only drag lifts are open. Lots of ski teams up here and some quite funky stuff going on in the snow park.

Sitting having a beer at 3823m, or 12535ft and I can feel the altitude, and last nights beer :)

Going with my uni and cost me GBP516 including whole 3 valleys lift pass, ski hire, bbq thingy one evening and a fondue evening with torchlight desent! Plus obviously travel, accom etc! Not too bad i think, however with it being a uni trip, i have a feeling spending money will be of a similar amount!! :twisted:

Wish I'd been inti this carry on when I was at uni! It will be a blast on so many levels, I am actually jealous :)

Well here I go with an October Zermatt report, and right off the bat; not as good as May in terms of riding but that is to be expected.

Day 1. Go to work, check weather on Europes glaciers, announce I am leaving at 1pm and in resort at 7.15pm. Just as well I keep my snowboard bag packed for just these occasions. Accommodation 80 Euro for 2 nights B&B, okay it was the worlds smallest room but what more does a single traveller need? Early leave from work on a Friday means 2 things; a long weekend and an early start on the beer! So 1.30am and knocking on 12 beers down it's off to bed to be fresh for the morning. Man, badgers arse goes no way to describe how I felt at 7am on Saturday morning, but still up and ready to go I was. On the glacier by 9am,..... It's a long way okay?!?? Magically my riding was good, but after snowboarding at least once in each of 10 of the last 12 months might have something to do with it. Crappy day, flat light, intermittent snow and dense cloud at times. Add the fact that a day on t-bars is rough for a snowboarder, especially when sharing. Lunchtime and a wee sandwich and beer at the restaurant at the top of the KM. Absolutely blinding headache, 2 more runs and down. Pint a burger and in bed by 9pm.

Day 2. Up at 7am, bright as a button, sun is shining but the wind is blowing aloft. 50-60km/h and the announcement regarding opening was delayed. Rather than start my 6th coffee I took a look outside to see if I could see anyone in the garb heading for the lift. Sure enough there was. So a little later despite good intentions and behaviour. A1 conditions, really nice and straight into a groove. It started to get interesting after my second run, the queues were massive, were talking 25 minutes for a t-bar and lets not start on the behaviour of a lot of people who should know better. I was appalled by some of the stuff I saw in line today, it depressed me and I nearly called time after lunch. But no I sm Scottish and I had paid, I was notgoing to stoop to thier level but I was sure as hell gonna say something the next time a 12 year old ran over the topsheet of my board with full weight of both skis to get in line first before turning to say to me in German that he didn't have enough space and I should watch the back of his skis. Poor little #$Euro¥+*% I swear he was gonna cry.

Anyhoo, what was interesting was I satrted to ride like I never had before. The punishment of the queue followed by the burn of the lifts meant it was all over too quick, so lets make it wortwhile and hopefully last a little longer on decent. I began to really push my linked turns, to the point of getting really low and only on the very edge of my weapon (sorry, it popped into my mind and I couldn't resist). I was turning so smoothly the back of my board was giving feedback and actually starting the transition to the opposite lock for me. I'm sure it wasn't and it was something subconscious really, but five or six times I felt like the skies had parted and I could fly. This sounds gushing and self indulgent, but I have never boarded like I did today, NEVER. I have been ecstatic since about 1pm. ( I was last off the glacier at 4pm and missed my train). The only downside was it made me faster, significantly. So more lifts :( Anyway long story short. I am just in Germany on the ICE with the most rewarding afternoon behind me, grinning like a cat. My rant would be 10 times worse if that had not have happened. I will divulge another time.

I don't know I'm quite there to be honest, but I have never riden like that before, it actually feels like re-discovering the whole thing. I've never done lessons, because I hate direction (and I would certainly not advocate my approach) but I feel immensly proud tonight.

Well thats the main thing, feeling like you've accomplished the next step, i remember when i first started carving, it was essentially self taught, although my basic technique wasn't, but that feeling of being on right on the edge and pulled into each turn is awesome, one of the most exhilerating experiences you can have!

Getting back on thread just booked my hotel in Livigno, bookings must be struggling as they have previously refused to take a part week booking but they have had a change of heart, so I have only a green card to arrange for January then I'm sorted for this Winter 8)

I have booked for Borrovets 16th Jan 2010 but after reading reviews(i am new to this) i am very worried that 1. there will be no snow and 2.we will be ripped off.........

There will be snow and you won't get ripped off if you're careful. Make sure you always double check your bill before you pay, and have change. In lot's of places (not all) they never have any change so you won't get any! Remember if you are buying ski wear that if it's a bargain then it's probably fake.

I wouldn't choose to go back there but we did have a good time.

You will still have a fab time, don't worry!

Who are you booked with and where are you staying? :D

There are some good aspects to Borovets, the snow is usually good. I was lapping up a metre deep, and the locals were moaning about the "bad season". Gondola locations are good. Good runs. If you choose not to ski back to the hotel, the normal taxi is a horse and sleigh for next to no cost. The ski school is a high standard.

The food is not the greatest. You do need to count your fingers after a transaction.

From all I know about it, and what I have worked out for myself, there is nothing good about Bulgaria. Except once you get onto the slopes and forget where you are maybe.

The snow was good when I was there at Christmas time a couple of years ago.

However, the gondola queues were the worst I've ever experienced (every morning) but you can take a taxi up to a chair lift and ski down a red that gets you to mid station for a fiver. The gondola (at the Samakov end of town was closed for three of our six days. The pistes were not very well maintained. Hire equipment was ancient and ski school was appauling...I heard soooooo many complaints. (Our friends had private lessons and said she was fab.) My friends son was drugged and robbed of cash, camera and phone then thrown onto the street by bouncers. He ended up in hospital for the night. I had my mobile phone stolen from my pocket when in a bar on the first day. Knew of three people while I was there that had skis stolen from outsde bars during the day.

I would not choose to go back as my experience of Borovets was not good, but there are thousands of people who go back year after year they absolutely love the place. I suspect lots of them have been no where else.

Its sad to hear of bad experiences like that, and I do believe that it would be more prevalent in Bulgaria than many other places. We can all only report what we see for ourselves.

I would not have an issue with going back to Bulgaria. However, my reason for going there, at the time, no longer exists, in that Bulgaria no longer appears to be an ultra-low cost destination.

I agree Dave, prices have rocketed in the Bulgarian resorts. There's no need for the prices to have risen as they have, it is just greed. The English couple who run the Alpina bar refuse to hike the prices as the locals have done which is why it is popular and so cheap. I find it quite unbelievable that the Bulgarians don't realise that Bulgaria was popular because it was cheap, people really are going elsewhere now and in the long run they will lose money.

Nothing about Bulgarian skiing appeals to me. I think we had this discussion last season as well so no point going over old rope.

Sorry to spoil the trashing comp, but I have pretty good memories of skiing Bulgaria. The snow was not great, bit icy AFAIR, but the tuition was excellent and the rental gear was quality stuff. It was very cheap on the hill (how times have changed), and the food was excellent, old fashioned meals, like chicken soup with chicken bones in the bottom :lol:
Nobody ripped us off, or stole anything, and I'm certain I saw no prostitutes :shock:
