FOR SALE, 175cm ARMADA ARV

Skied about 4 weeks over the last 2 seasons, professionally tuned after every week of skiing. Never had a base grind. Skied once since last tune so just general light scrapes in the bottom, one more major scrape which a base grind would take out, never bothered to get it repaired but isn't to the core (will include photos later). Usually top sheet scratches and a couple chips but nothing major. Drilled once at 305mm for rossi 150 (PX15); not included. Not sure what I should ask for the skis flat, offers? Buyer to pay delivery at cost, est GBP10->GBP15.

Tony, you could ski these if you wanted to, they are a twin tip, so will ski shorter then their length.

Tony, you could ski these if you wanted to, they are a twin tip, so will ski shorter then their length.

Plus they are quite a soft flexing ski so it makes them even easier to manage for their length.

ive already enquired at freezescotland (shop in edin) and they are retailing at about GBP430 for next years stock

I have never found myself wanting more length for general ''all mountain'' use. Did you have a go on the 175s too?

no i havent but im 194cm myself so i def dont think 175cm is for me-esp when you lose about 3cm for twin tip

Those skis are a bunch older than mine +++ they had a lot of issues, all of which were fixed for mine. Plus the 07/08 is the best top sheet by far. You might be 194cm tall but a ski definitely doesn't know how tall you are, they definitely know how heavy you are!

Pabs, chuck me a couple of places to buy good all mountain/freeride/twin tips at good prices, seeing as you know this market well.
I have looked at a couple of possibilities so far:
Atomic Punx Limited Edition 08/09
Rossi S3 or S4
Blizzard Titan 8

I want something around 80 in the waist, 168-170 in length to replace my Scott Patrol, which as much as I like, are just that bit too long for me.

You need to be careful you don't end up with a park ski, generally soft and pretty useless anywhere but the park. Does it need to be a twin tip?

No, doesnt need to be twin tip, my Patrol's aren't. I agree, I dont want something too soft and therefore useless. I think my perfect ski would be Scott Neo, but hard to get hold of at a decent price.

Does your height really not affect your ideal ski length? I thought it did, as well as your weight. Otherwise, why do they go on about how beginners should have shoulder height skis (or whatever it is they say) and more experienced skiers should have skis eyebrow height, or whatever.

And if you have your own skis, does that mean you have to buy more when you get fatter, or thinner, or possibly keep a whole range of skis - like with clothes - according to your weight?

My weight regularly fluctuates by about a stone, or by around 10% of my total body weight. I tend to put on weight in the autumn, with the shorter evenings I'm out working less, and over Christmas, and then try and lose weight to get my ski trousers on in Feb, then put some more back on, and then lose it again with the long days because I'm outside working.

So, I'd need long skis at Christmas, shorter skis in Feb, and then even shorter skis if I was ever lucky enough to get to ski during the summer :lol:.

A ski does not know how tall you are, but can feel how heavy you are. Different skis have differing characteristics. I have skis ranging from 158cm to 172cm currently, all are perfectly useable because they do different things. The shortest pair are the fastest. The fattest,86mm waist, longest pair have the tightest turn radius, but are quite soft to ski.

Beginners get handed skis that are shorter because manufacturers "average out" ski performance and characteristics in certain sectors of the market, not just for beginners. This means that if you are a good skier, but say, short and heavy, it can be a tough job finding a ski to support your weight that's not really long, as mfrs think you should be a foot taller :roll:

actually it does, it's all related to movement, pendulums and levers. It may not matter much though, within certain constraints there's not so much variation between weight and height for people, those constraints typically being imposed by the fact most skiers are going to be reasonably fit and not be carrying excessive weight just by nature of the physical activity.

I'm not too sure what you're saying (I'm exceptionally thick, as my daughters will tell you).

Do you mean that generally speaking a skiers weight is proportional to their height, and that therefore height is indirectly related to ski length, or that height is actually directly related to ideal ski length?

pretty much, that's pretty true of everyone but the upper and lower limits vary from the stick-like super model to the overweight person, as a subset skiers are self limiting to an extent, you'll not get the very thin or very overweight

that means a hire shop dishing skis out based on height will be more or less right most of the time

But sometimes the ski hire shops will be come unstuck, selecting ski length on height like that. I have a female friend who also skis, and she's about 2 inches shorter than me, and weighs about 3 stone more.

Another thing I would like to know, is this. Do men and women really need different skis, and if so, why?

Of course Ise will answer the final part of your question in more detail but ideally EVERYONE needs different skis because no body is really the same.

I would suggest that whilst there are many factors there are too many to sell a ski on one factor, it is a complicated mix of facts and preferences. Of course what the top sheet looks like is very important.

sometimes, but I only said most of the time they'd be mostly right and this isn't precise anyway, most skis only come in graduations of 5cm anyway so it's never going to be that precise.

there's a mechanical difference in movement though, a lower centre of gravity and women have a different weight profile as they typically have lower muscle mass. This can map to having the binding further forward which is trivial but probably means that the centre point of the curve, or the thinnest bit of the ski, needs to be more forward as well. That's also related to having smaller foot sizes as well.

I don't think you could generalise to this point. Some people like 200cm long powder skis and I doubt they are a load heavier than normal folks kicking about on 180cm skis :wink:

I use these skis for teaching, skiing everyone on the mountain (including groomers and and powder) and for park skiing (only kickers, never slid a rail on these).

what ski have you got that is short but the fastest?
surely you must be skiing on the mission for it to have a short turn radius?

what ski have you got that is short but the fastest?
surely you must be skiing on the mission for it to have a short turn radius?

The fastest ski I have is the Stockli Stormrider AT, not found the top speed yet, I keep running out of smooth slope :lol: The Stockli has the biggest turn radius at 17.2

I don't have the Mission, instead I have the 172 Punisher, and they are good fun in most conditions it would seem :D
Of course I'm using mens skis, so that will be all wrong ) Oh and I'm probably undertall for the Punishers, too )

Are you really using men's skis? (Sorry Pablo - going off piste again).

I ordered men's skis to hire last holiday, because I thought if I'm a man's height, I do a man's work, I look like a man (people are always calling me 'Sir') then I ought to ski with men's skis. But they did look at me a bit funny in the hire shop :lol: And I never did find out whether the skis I got were meant for a man or a woman - but they were really good and went very fast.

Yes and no. I'm being a bit tongue in cheek there, because I don't own women specific skis, so if you accept what ise posted earlier...... ) All of my skis could be considered suitable for men and women, just like the Armada's that Pabs is selling. Some ski makers do make skis for women. Some even make good skis for women. These do tend to be at the top of the range though. Sadly most seem to take their softest shortest ski, put some flowers on the topsheet, offer a lightweight binding, and call it women specific. I did own a pair briefly, I was dazzled by the marketing bull. They were very flappy and subsequently were sold on ebay after less than 1 week's use :roll:
