Ski Quiz is on! Win a free unique polar fleece vest

As promised we have the ski quiz which will help skiers accept Spring and the long long Summer!

There are 10 questions.
The deadline is Friday May 1st 2009 at 12 PM London time!
Each person is allowed one answer post to Pavel via PM.

Minimum score to obtain vest is 9/10.

You can use any source of information (except Dave since he has answers)!

And you have no idea how difficult that one is!

I nearly was going to give a Phenix ski jacket just on that one! I will be very very surprised if anyone gets 5!

Oh Pavel, I think is your toughest yet. The time frame is so challenging. How can I explain all these hours on the computer to my wife? In a week when I am supposed to be rewiring and plumbing in my son's new, (old stone Scottish) house? At the same time organising the membership for our Tennis club? And the stone wall building, and the other son's garden? Man, it's a hard life.

Well it will have to be done. But where to start. I think a couple of the questions are a bit difficult.

And the remainder of course, are impossible.

I'm thinking question 6. We used to have a guy in Manchester Harriers who used the same stuff to ermm, he reckoned, improve his race times. Let's just say that his wife, and any location near the race start were involved. :shock: No, it couldn't be that, there are no bus shelters on the ski slopes. :-)

You have all the honors! Imagine two polar fleece jackets from two "special" ski resorts! Once you find out this "new" ski resort you will try even harder!
This vest makes skiers part as you walk by! You will heard whispers as you walk by! Then someone will ask, "did you really ski there?" Are skiers really that fanatic? Is it true about THE,,,, lift? Tell us how it,,,what is it really skiing there!

This site has the smartest skiers and you do have one week!!!!

Just think what you will have learnt!

Just that first item is a ski course in itself!!

Everyone,
Is it not wonderful to "tease' the brain to think!
To make those "neurons" fire,finding connections! I know for sure that when Geordieski finds out about item 6,,,she will rush to her husbands side and bring him to a site which has video and they will watch "how they did it"!!!

I just realized problem!
It will be solved.

As for the persons who do not like quizes,,no problem just avoid them! Then what are you going to say or do when I give out a ski jacket from Phenix (next years model)! Then wonder all the things you could have learnt!

Please forgive problems! I will find others who are more "technical" oriented!

I know what that object is - it's an anchor. Presumably you throw it overboard when you are ski-ing out of control and heading for the edge of a ravine :lol:

But I don't know the answers to any of the other questions - I'm not very good at quizzes or ski-ing.

However, thank you Pavel for taking the time to make this quiz. Maybe you could do an easier one for idiots like me?

Yes I will have a Summer quiz and prize will be PHENIX SKI PANTS, and since they are small I have planned an easier type quiz (for smaller persons or adolescences)!

Mind you people on this site are smart (even if they wear small clothing)!!!

Meanwhile just ask around to ski experts about these questions! I am sure some will help you!

Just a small note to Gordieski,

You are now a "veteran" so we will not accept any "imaginative", creative answers this time!

Several persons have "mentionned" that the pictured item should have varied angles of view!
You are correct and in next quiz there will be at least 4 views given!

To make it easier,,since DaveMac's wife had to drag him away after a marathon session in front of computer if you know my passions, my focus on,,,,,it will help a great deal!
If you are sharp in your perceptions and also accept that I always want to be on the cutting edge of new ski technologies, then you are close to getting that item!

Oh no....my beginner status has run out!!!! :lol: I'm really struggling on this one actually, I've hardly been able to get any time to research properly as have been stuck in my lab all day and night!!

I like being able to read all about the things you find out when looking for the answers for one of these quizzes (even the wrong answers...which Im sure mine will be are always interesting facts to know!). I think Pavel is on a secret mission to educate all skiiers in the history and background of the sport, and this is his genius method of teaching!!! I think I may fail the class this time around though!! :cry:

There's no way I'm even attempting to do it, sorry Pavel.

I've only got one week to go now before holidaymakers arrive in our 'new' holiday cottage, and we haven't finished painting yet, let alone everything else - like sorting out all the bedding and crockery and the garden etc.

So, it's total panic mode now - bed at midnight and up at 6 a.m - and I'm not worrying about quiz answers :lol:

Well it looks like I'm out of time to put a serious effort into the quiz too. So, like AllyG I'm afraid I'm out of the running. It is now May 1st with about 45 minutes left in the quiz period and I'm rushing to get into the city. I guess tax season, when I'm not prepared, takes my time from the great Pavel Quiz :cry:

However I'll be searching out the answers over the weekend,if only to satisfy my own curiosity. I feel #5 must be a device of the Pavelian design or brand for edge angle measurement. :D

I kept planning to have a go at this but sadly my lab work kept getting in the way and now my boss has given me 50 lab scripts to mark which are going to take ages. Ah well, I'm determined to submit answers to the next one (even if they are not correct!!) :D
I did try to do the ‘women skiers quiz' last time and seemed to be doing OK until I got to the objects in the picture - then I got completely stuck so decided it wasn't worth submitting the few feeble answers that I had managed to coble together. :roll:
Pavel, I'd be very interested to know what the objects were in that quiz as apart from possibly suncream :?: I hadn't a clue.

Oh come on Lynn every one knows what the object is, it is one those things that you use from time to time when you need too, I use mine all the time and am never without it where ever I go winter or summer, if your without it or leave it at home it can cause enormous problems and all manner issues for the owner of such an object
just make sure you carry yours around with you when ever you ski because if you don't I cannot be be held responsible for such a mistake.

Well the dealine is past.
All the answers are in,,,,,and no winner!

Bandit was the very best with great answers, however the minimum score level score was not attained so polar vest is going to a needy person in local shelter!

I would have discounted Sylvain Saudan, as for the descents specified, his was over 40 years ago, and outside the time frame of the question.

Apparently I got 9 wrong as well. I should have said

Side wise play or lateral play! All ski bindings allow some free -mouvement
tip to tail play All bindings allow flex play within front units and rear units

I suggest that "play" cannot be considered a dynamic force, but instead a manufactured tolerance.

I really wanted to enter as I usually do but time was against me. The trouble with me is I get searching for something specific and end up reading every-thing else. there were any number of people skiing extreme lines 30 odd years and before so it's an arbitrary, if not bizarre, figure to pick and to suggest there was only a couple of skiers is just wrong. Saudan himself was skiing stuff like that more like 45 or 50 years ago and was known as "Le skieur de l'impossible". Saudan and Anselm Baud were contemporaries and skied together, his son Edouard Baud, a Chamonix guide lost his live in Gervasutti Couloir as a piece of ski trivia.

In so much as any sense could be made of the question, Vallencant, Saudan or Baud would all be good answers I would have thought. As would another dozen or so skiers of the day, all French or Swiss-French though IIRC and part of a group that really put Chamonix on the map as an extreme skiing hotspot and built a reputation it's still got today. This form of ski-extreme differs a bit from what magazines cover now though, the point was to climb the route and then ski it, much of the modern version involves and easier approach often by helicopter and then some large cliff jump which seems dull by comparison.

As ise says, there were a number of outstanding extreme skiers in the European Alps during the late 1970's (ie: 30 odd years ago)

Wickers, it gets serious, when someone sets a question, and then when you answer it precisely, tells you, that you got it wrong. Not because the answer you gave was wrong, it just did not indicate the person they had in mind, because the question format was sufficiently imprecise, so as to be misleading :roll:

Problem is Wickers, that it's not just the 1 question. The only way of winning the quiz was to know what was in his mind, as distinct from answering the questions.

Apparently (according to my results from Pavel) Torque and Inertia are not dynamic forces acting on a ski binding..... Hmmmm, for example, these peeps would tend to disagree about Torque (in english)...

Personally I appreciate the time and effort that Pavel puts into preparing the quizzes, I learn loads about skiing when I do them that I would probably never come across in my usual reading. If some of the questions have more than one answer there is usually a small point in the question to indicate which is correct (although I often dont realise this until the answers are posted! :oops: so I think its unfair to criticise But then....Im very used to getting the questions wrong so its not so much of an issue for me.... :lol:

If you can spare the time, go back a few pages in this thread, to see that there have been a few problems, both with question structure, and acceptance of the correct answer based on answering the question specifically as set. The quiz was impossible to win IMV.

As for learning...I learned that whale sperm was used in 19c California on skis. Fat lot of use that is :lol:

Instead of a quiz, we could do an opinion poll, with a certain result so that there are no arguments afterwards.

How many people think I will get the farmhouse (my parents old holiday cottage) next door to us, ready for holidaymakers this Friday?

I haven't quite finished the painting yet, I still have to clean the 'tar' from the lower part of the old huge chimney, I've got to seal the slate window sills (8 of them) I've got all the crockery in boxes etc., the bedlinen is all mixed up and in boxes, the carpenter's coming tomorrow to splice in some wood in the rotten windows, I've got to re-hang the curtains, I've got to work out what we haven't got and go and buy it (e.g. I've just remembered I haven't supplied rubber gloves), and the electricians still have some minor work to do, the downstairs shower room needs all the grout to be deep cleaned plus the tiled floor, I've got to work out why the telephones aren't working right, plus I have to clean everywhere when everything else is finished and make up 5 beds.

As far as I can see there are 3 possible scenarios.
1. I stay up all night and work all day and everything gets done and it all turns out O.K.

2. I get some minor complaints about the things I haven't finished yet.

3. The holidaymakers run away and complain and find somewhere else and I get in big trouble with the agents (I've never had a complaint yet in 11 years with our other cottage).

There are no prizes for correct guesses.
Solution sometime after 3 p.m. on Friday when the guests arrive.

I'd expect that would be the same, the cheerleaders blithely voting away assuming anyone that thought "oh, god, not again" but was too polite to say it was just as eager :D or someone did say "oh, god, not again" they'd be immediately lynched :lol: which is the way of lynch mobs of course, while half a dozen are saddling up the rest of the village is shuffling around embarrassed muttering "I've a good mind to say something" :lol: :lol:
