Going, Going nearly gone....

I don't know about you guy's but I always find this time of year depressing I have just had the snow update for LGb and the snow is receding quicker than my hair line, 140 cm on the upper and 40 cm on the lower and dropping rapidly daily and they are fairing better than some other resorts where the grass is beginning to show though.
Once the mountains have gone through the full cycle and green has replaced white I'm fine I can view the beauty again though a new set of eyes and happily spend a week of my summer holiday playing in the mountains, till that time I'm depressed........

Re:Going, Going nearly gone....

The snows will come again.

I enjoy the Winter (obviously!) but Spring ain't so bad; chance to relax as the season winds down, bit of sunshine, getting the bike out, chilling in the garden, a few kart races ("I feel the need...") to top-up the adrenaline...

Summer will be all too brief and then Autumn will be on us as we glue ourselves to the webcams looking for those first flakes...

Just six short months from now, the peaks of Grand Bo will be snow-capped again.

And so it goes. 8)

Hi Ian,

I know what you mean :( but i am off for an end of season blast on the 20th :D :D and i am hoping the snow gods will smile one last time (huge snowfall expected in the south of the alps over the next few days, and hopefully the northen parts will follow).....but look on the bright side the alps in summer are still a great place to be :D, and there is only 32 weeks until the start of the next season....yeeeeehaaaaa :D :D :D

jon.

Re:Going, Going nearly gone....

So, I would like to know, which countries or resort areas have the longest average
season in Europe. Reliable constant first falls, through to this bleak announcement that it is
going, almost gone, end of the season!
I am thinking of doing Canada one week and then come home via Europe one week.

Re:Going, Going nearly gone....

Hello,

Most resorts that have skiing above 2000m and up to around 3300m that also have many nothern and eastern facing slopes generally have a good long season, my back yard of Les Arcs is open from early december to the end of april (25th this year), but up the valley in Val and Tignes the last day is the 6th may this year i think.

Further afield high snowsure resorts are Cervinia ,Livigno ,Courmayeur ,Zermatt ,the Argentiere region of Chamonix etc, in fact there is due to be a large dump of snow (almost a metre in the southern parts of the alps this comming weekend and early next week so some resorts may stop open for an extra week epending on their closing dates.

Also if you don't mind a bit of trecking you can still ski in the resorts after the official closing dates their just wont be any lift operators about and you just need to take precautions if you are venturing far afield.....mind you a two or three hour hike up amountain to ski 10 - 20 mins back down takes some doing....or you could hire a mountain guide and do a ski tour, Zermatt ,Chamonix and the Tarentaise tour from Val to Les Arcs are highly reagrded.

jon.

(See the video below.) They always say what great amounts of snow exists there. Despite the warming spring weather, tonight is supposed to be in the -6C range for the Amqui region. Today was +2 and sunny after a cold night last night. Perfect end of season conditions. Val d'Irene is about 7 hours from Halifax, N.S.; and the hill itself has some steep sections and snow quality similar to Zermatt. Enjoy this clip then get out a fly swatter for the next season to come along :!:
http://www.zoneski.com/films/uploads/video/344.wmv

Happy Easter :!:
Mike
