Multilingual pets

Every night my cat demands tea at bang on 5pm. Its like some kind of in built alarm clock. Shes even adjusted to BST very quickly.
The thing is, when I pluck a sachet of food out of the box at random, a bit like a lucky dip, and tell what flavour it is, I don't get a reaction. However, when I tell her in German what it is, she miaows and goes mental. For example:

TH: "Would you like beef?"
Bailey: "........"
TH: "Ok, how about some RIND" (***hoch-deutsch pron.***)
Bailey: "Miaow....miaow....purr purr" doing a little dance around the bowl

Anyone else got any pets that understand different languages?

I could write lots on this topic (Wales is a bi-lingual country you know) but I'm not going to in case Admin wipes it off again for being unski-related.

I wonder if Bailey skis, if She/he does would it be puuuuurfect, sorry that the best I could come up with, I think the brains not working with all the exercise to day cutting the grass in the snow garden :thumbup:

Nope, Tony's correct, we have sheep in the next field, and I say good morning,in Spanish. Think they are from the Baaasque area. :wink:

Well, I did A level German and french at school, but find it much easier to recall and speak the German for some reason. I can remember things in German that I cant in French, its quite natural for some reason. Odd.

Bailey does seem to understand however. Bless her.

The only German I know is from Blackadder!! My cats do seem to understand 'Schnell Schnell Kartofelkopf'!!!!!!!!!

Ahh, you see its all about the WAY you say it :wink:
I tend to use the word "Schnell" a lot when skiing in Austria, along with "Nein" and "los fahren" obviously used loudly and as formally as possible!!

Which one of your cats is called Potato Head?

Thats an easy one to answer. Whickas multi packs have the flavour printed on them in 4 languages. When I pick up a packet and ask her if she wants X flavour in English, there is no reaction. However, when I read the German word for X flavour, she goes mental.

I havent got as far as trying Spanish or French with her yet, she might actually explode.

I dont know about multilingual pets, but one of the squirels in our garden is a tea leaf. Pulled back the curtains this morning, the big window was oen and I caught the tail end of a squirel going out of the window with the stopper off one of my perfume bottles in his mouth.

I think squirrels are a delicacy in some countries, just an idea :shock:

My dog rarely understands english (funny that, for a dog), he too knows when it's feeding time, I could set my clock by him.

He does understand me when I say 'weewee' or 'poopoo' in a very high pitched voice though.

I don't know about foreign languages but my dog talks to....wait for it...GOD!

Whenever I speak to him instead of looking at me, he turns his head to one side and looks up in the air, presumably asking for divine inspiration for dealing with such an imbecile as me who can't speak dog!

My 9 week old golden retriever puppy doesnt understand english yet! wish he did when he chomps my ankles :lol: ... and my old siberian husky cant hear anymore.

Does anybody else have dog that can spell? Mention the "the W word", spell out W A L K or anything along similar lines and my Jack Russell used to go ballistic. Never tried to confuse her with another language though :D

awww very cute kitty!

I would love a cat but the coyotes would kill it if it went outside..and my big wolf(siberian husky) would eat it for dinner inside the house. :shock:

My folks have an African Grey Parrott who shouts my name at the top of his voice EVERY time the phone rings, this would be fine but I moved out 15 years ago!!!

He also shouts "bloody ironing" everytime my mother gets the ironing board out :mrgreen:

I nearly was given a parrot a year a ago, I don't think I would have been able to resist teaching it all the rude stuff, so perhaps it was a saving grace.... :wink:

Years ago one of my customers had several parrots, she should not have as it was them that made her asthma worse. She insited on keeping them. She was a very contankerous old biddy and the only two people in the world that liked her or had any time for her was me and her Doctor. She liked us so much she left her parrots to us in her will. Every time she got ill and need urgent medication her GP used to phone me up and say ' quick can you get these tablets down to her otherwise by the weekend you will be the owner of two parrots'. Have since moved away and always wonder if some-how a solicitors letter will end up on my doorstep telling me I now have some parrots.
