Selling skis?

I was in a ski shop the other day and there was a man clearly determined to buy a pair of skis, the salesman in the shop was holding them up beside him commenting that they would be a 'great size' and agreeing with the guy that they would be 'fantastic for ''shoosting'' '. The guy walked away without a pair of skis in his hands after looking determined to have a pair. Not once was it mentioned that maybe his weight might have had something to do with the ski choice (and IMO, the 2 pairs the guy was looking at were far too short).

The worst thing about it was that the guy in the shop was the owner, I reckon with a bit of basic ski knowledge he could have had a sale go through the till.

Ever come across any really bad sales techniques?

Re:Selling skis?

Iceman,
I believe it's 'schussing' and it comes from the German 'to shoot' (I may be wrong here, I don't actually know any German other than 'Guten morgan' and I may have spelt that wrong).

It's when you go straight downhill without 'tacking' (O.K. I know this is a ski site), incredibly fast, because you know from the lie of the land that it's quite safe and you can see to the end and stop safely and not frighten or knock over any beginners.

I discovered last month that to be in the correct position for this your elbows have to be in front of your knees, so that your knees can still turn, when you're crouched right down like you're doing squats. In this position you can actually steer and it's amazingly exhilarating.

Tony, what do you sell? (Presumably not coffins or double glazing).

Ally

Say it isn't true! I thought that was so I could tell which foot to put each ski on (green to port - or was it starboard?). That would explain why I can only turn left...

Re:Selling skis?

Sorry Pablo,
You mean the original question 'Did you ever come across any really bad selling techniques?' only applies to skis? Not coffins? Or whatever it is that Tony sells?

I'm not very good at forums. The only other one I've ever been on was a mental health website - explains a lot I know

Ally

Re:Selling skis?

Well,
Pablo, I'm afraid I've never tried buying skis, because as I said before, I don't fancy taking them on several trains and carting them around on the underground and everywhere.

So, until they make collapsible (possibly inflatable) skis, which are easily portable, I won't be trying to buy any, so I'm afraid I have nothing further to contribute on your thread .

Ally

You are absolutely correct. A SCHUSS is a part of a ski run when you need to straightline and tuck up or you wont make it to the other side!

For the record, I work in magazine printing sales, Ally.

Sorry Pabs, I thought you were talking generic sales. My experience of buying skis relates to 4 episodes:

1. My first pair from a shop in Mayrhofen, cheap at 149 euros and early intermediate level skis. I had already made my mind up blindly to get them and didnt need much input. The sales assistant who spoke broken English told me they were good first skis, very soft and forgiving. So I bought them, skied on them for 3 weeks and sold them to a mate as I needed something more advanced.

2. My second pair from a man in South Shields, who I rang because he had some bargains on his website. He asked me lots about my level, experience, height and weight, what I wanted them to do for me, and came up with a solution, which I bought, and I have had 4 weeks out of them to date.

3. My wifes skis, which I had seen on a website at half price, and went into our local dryslope pro shop where they had them at GBP100 more. We chatted to the salesmen, who said they would be perfect for her in terms of ability and requirements and we then negotiated on the price, and after saying he could only drop GBP50 as that was cost, he came running after us as we left and said he would match the price and have the bindings fitted free of charge.

4. My all mountain skis which were GBP300 down to GBP150 on ebay, for which I made an unrealistic bid of GBP75 and the seller closed the deal! No communication required, and I now own 2 pairs of skis much to Mrs H's disgust.
