Re:skiing and a bad knee

I had a meniscus tear trimmed several years ago. Tha advise I was given was that you can do as much as you feel able to on it. So I was snowboarding seven days later. Skiing may be very diferent, because on a snowboard, each knee is supported by the other in a very strong triangle and not subject to the same stresses as skiing. It actually took a year or so befor I was no longer aware of any weakness.

On the pain front (and everyone is different), I never had to use anything stronger than a couple of Ibuprophen.

Trencher

Re:skiing and a bad knee

Hiya

I skied in January, 9 months and one day post op. I took it easy, only two hours a day for three days (even though I was tempted to do more) and I lasted pretty well. I took ibuprofen and paracetamol every four hours to prevent swelling and this dealt with any pain too, which was minimal.

I wear a brace on my mcl damaged leg but only neoprene on my acl leg as I've been assured my knee is as strong as it was pre-injury. Is your acl replaced with your patella tendon? I felt it in that area a touch.

I'm off again in 16 days for a week and hopefully won't have to hold back so much this time. I'm certainly not going to go crazy though, it's still only 12 months post-op and I want to ski at new year :D. In fact, I've got my final follow up appointment with the specialist this evening and then I'm hoping I'll never have to see him ever again!!!

Good luck

Personally I would run on the side of caution and stick to the groomers, wouldn't want to be skiing crud having my knee twisted and torque-d all over the place.

I have multiple long term knee probs, that I tell my doctor I will "manage". Having skiied "groomers" in Niederau for 4 weeks this winter, I controlled the knee issue. In the next week, being determined to ski the "Stueck", unpisted, directly down under the Gondola, I was in knee-strife after a dozen turns. The remainder of the run was about survival. The rest of my season was significantly affected.

But I did then get a lot of painting done.

This was a good thread,I have been wondering about this too..the pain and how long after I will be able to do things. As most of you know I have been skiing on a injured torn knee (with an hinged knee brace) and the help of ibuprofen....I know Im nuts ..but I find skiing easier on my knee than walking )
p.s
I stay out of the deep powder, knee cant take that at the moment

I see the ortho surgeon next week to get MRI results...yikes!

Lisa

Re:skiing and a bad knee

My left knee swells up only when I ski. It is not painful or uncomfortable but does feel a little weaker than the right one. If I wear a knee support bandage/tube thingy it doesn't swell up and feels fine. I have had some arthritic problems wth that knee in the past so I put it down to that and have never bothered to see a doctor about it.

Re:skiing and a bad knee

Just a reminder, in case anyone hasn't read one of these knee threads befor. Muscle counts, especially the quads, but really every muscle that keeps the knee stable. Light exercise won't build enough strength in the legs to have bullet proof knees. It takes cross-training that actually builds muscle and preferably with some instability/balance built in. Weight machines are not as good for this, as a sport that takes a little leg oomph.

Trencher

absolutely Trencher. I ride my bike with both gears on maximum, uphill, sitting down. Blimey! It kills

I also love my yoga. Very strong poses work the legs really hard and the balancing poses are fantastic for making your brain aware of where you knees are (there's a word for it that I can't think of for the life of me?).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_board

Re:skiing and a bad knee

I started post op about 2 years because I had some problems! I find snowboarding easy on the knees! I had my right knee reconstructed twice & luckily I stand regular as opposed to goofy, so my right knee is at the back. A friend of mine who also had knee problems had to stand goofy even though he didn't want to initially, so that his bad knee was at the back! I'm not too sure how much difference this makes as my left knee is fine so I've never had that problem. I also keep both my feet strapped in as much as possible, even on the chairlift! so as to mimimise any chance of a twist!

Those are good observations. I know it would not have been as easy for me if the bad knee had been at the front. In good snowboard technique the front leg does most of the work guiding the board. Bad technique is when you see people kicking the back of the board out to turn with their rear leg. So that makes sense. I was using step in bindings which were easy to click into on the lift and made getting off steadier. I did have one liftie tell me off ( you are not supposed to clip in on the lift). I guess I could have got a doctors note and ask for an accommodation for a disability.

Trencher

Was able to stick it last year but will i be on blues and reds or how will i fair up? and yes im going skiing :)

Being an 'old git' new skier my knee problem was/is degenerative arthritis (old age) and last November I could hardly walk or bend my right knee. I followed a course of muscle strengthening exercises and went on an already booked week to St Anton in January. I feared the worst and expected this to be my last ever trip. My thighs ached, my calves ached, my back ached, my shoulders ached, but not a twinge from the knee. So I cracked in another 'last trip', to Sauze d'Oulx last week. Again no knee pain. So this week I am going to the doc to see if he will prescribe me a monthly ski trip on the NHS as a cure for my arthritis - reckon I'll get away with it ??

Re:skiing and a bad knee

Eljay,
How did you make your avatar, or did you import a ready made one from somewhere? I think it's great.

Are knee injuries common with ski-ing/snowboarding? Or is it just that they are the most debilitating? Where are the threads on 'ski-ing and a bad back/shoulder/ankle etc.'? There seem to be several unfortunate people here with knee injuries.

Ally

Re:skiing and a bad knee
Hi All

Just back from Nendaz which was lovely. My OH suffers from recurring knee problems due to too much football in his yoof. He takes a daily dose of glucosamine and condrohtin tablet every day, skiing or not, and Ibuprofen every morning before attacking the slopes. He is still a bit sore at the end of the day, but nothing a nice warm bath doesn't cure.

A tip re: Ibuprofen, buy it in the pharmacie in the resort. They scorn the namby pamby sized doseage beloved of the UK health czars and one horse tranquillizer sized pill will be enough for all day )
