How did every-one start skiing?

Was it passed on by skiing parents/friends. Was it something you always wanted?

Re:How did every-one start skiing?

Went on a PGL 'family activity' holiday with the kids last summer. Did abseiling, canoeing, fencing, climbing, archery... and dry slope skiing! Found it gives the same adrenelin buzz as horse riding, had to have some more, so off to try it for real on Saturday.

School trip, aged 11. Parents never interested either. I was hooked and the same for my brother who is now a snowboard instructor in Whistler. Hoorah for schools!

Re:How did every-one start skiing?

Ours was a three day city break to Amsterdam when there was loads of snow and we discovered we were both snow lovers. So set about a winter holiday without the intention to ski at all. But when it came to booking found all inclusive with learn to ski/board. And that was it.........well and truly hooked.

I felt it had defeated me all my life and wondered whether I should or shouldn't.

Once our youngest reached the age of five and I was 36 we took the plunge. The rest is history, I've been obsessed ever since

Re:How did every-one start skiing?

For me it was when my kids got lessons on a dry slope and I thought I'd give it a go. That was when they were 7 + 8 years old and now they are 24 and 25. Wish I could say I've managed to ski every season since then. But like caron, I was hooked and still am. Wish I'd learnt at a young age though. :D

Pablo. He was really doing so well, but after going through the picket fence at Glencoe, he took the skis off and never put them on again. That was about 7 years ago. I have just given up thinking he will ever try again.

I may be wrong, but think that may be part of the problem. He likes to be good at everything he does and the fact that I have skied for years (Not that I'm that good), but you know what I mean. The male ego/pride thing :(

Re:How did every-one start skiing?

My Mum learned to ski, I can't remember where, but she went ski-ing later in Obergurgl in 1950 when she was a student.

And when I was 7 our house burned down, and we all had a pretty traumatic time (none of us got burnt though), and I think that's why my Mum decided to take us all on a ski-ing holiday to Italy when I was 8 (even my Dad eventually came, although he wasn't at all keen on the idea). But I actually learned to ski on the dry slope at Alexandra Palace in North London, before we went. And I loved it right from the first moment.

I went again with the school when I was 11, and then not for 30 years until I went with my two girls.

Ally

Re:How did every-one start skiing?

I'd never even considered a winter holiday until Mrs H announced she had had enough of everyone coming to us for Xmas and that she wanted to get away, so we chose a skiing holiday. my daughter had been twice on school trips, but it hadnt aroused any interest in me then, and Mrs H had been 4 times when a schoolkid. I was 33 and didnt even touch a pair of skis until I arriced in Val Thorens - no dry slopes, no Xscape.
I hated it for 3 days. I expected to be able to ski like everyone else straight away and be out on the beer every night. I spent the first evening asleep, the second one in the bath and the third one getting leathered vowing never to ski again. UNTIL my instructor told us we were stopping snowploughing and learning parallel turns, and it suddenly all clicked into place.

I then went away for 4 days with Skidaddle, who is a highly experienced skier, to BKK, and there was 1 run open, which was a sheet of glass until 11am when it turned into a river. I spent the first day on my backside, but was determined to achieve something and by the end of day 3 I was managing to get down the difficult red in 1 piece. That trip taught me a lot. Especially about heavy drinking, Slovenian Army Cats, and Hugo Boss ater shave (its a long story).

I've been every year since, and 3 times in the past 3 seasons, so you could say I too am addicted.

Actually I'm on a diet as well - have been for a couple of months, and I've lost about 12 pounds, only got to lose another 2 pounds.

I like outside work, and getting dirty and things, and I'd never be able to stick wearing a suit or looking smart, so choosing farming was pretty much a no-brainer.
Re:How did every-one start skiing?

Hi Jenny,

My husband also has type 1 diabetes (has had it since he was 3, now 31.) Generally he managed to do blood tests when we stopped for coffee/lunch so didn't have a problem with the temperature, although if he started to feel low on sugar then he tended to err on the side of caution and eat something just in case (even without the blood test). We found cereal bars to be very good to carry with us, as probably a bit slower releasing on the carbs and less likely to melt if they are next to a warm body.

One other thing to bear in mind is the fact that skiing is quite strenuous exercise (even if your husband is fit) so you may find that he is 'burning off a lot more sugar' and may need to compensate accordingly. My OH is on two injections a day (75:25 long vs short acting insulin) and he decided to approximately halve the amount he was taking. He never once had a hypo on the slopes (which he was worried about), though his sugars did run a lot higher than they should have been for the entire holiday (which also isn't good, especially as he normally has very good control - we need a better plan for next time.) I guess it should be a lot easier to manage with 4 injections as you have much more flexibility (more injections didn't work for OH and neither did an insulin pump, but that's another story.)

Obviously this is only what worked for him and I'm not a doctor (or qualified to give advice) so it may be worth an e-mail or phone call to his specialist to see if they have any specific advice or I seem to remember a website for diabetics in sport - I'll see if I can find out the address for you.

Good luck and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time :D

Lynn
Re:How did every-one start skiing?

Back to the original question, skiing was something that I'd always wanted to learn to do, even when I was a child, but sadly my Mum is terrified of heights and wouldn't go, so we had summer family holidays instead.

I was a bit annoyed when two years after I'd left home my mum and step dad decided to give it a try with my little brother who was then 5. As myself and my (now) husband had just bought our first house, we couldn't afford a long weekend break, let alone a ski trip so it was something that I had to put to the back of my mind. They went somewhere in Austria (still haven't managed to find out where as neither of them can remember) but apparently it was a beginners resort and you went up the mountain in a gondola (so from hundreds of ski resorts, that really narrows it down…

Anyway, my step dad had a fantastic time (and won the ski school race, of which he is very proud) but after a day and a half, my little brother decided that he didn't like ski school and refused to go back. Mum only managed to learn to stop and then spent the rest of the week stuck in a chalet playing snakes and ladders or supervising him on a sledge so understandably it wasn't one of her better holidays (if it had been me, I would have insisted he give it another go, but then I'm just a mean older sister!!)
It also turned out that he had just been bored as he put his skis back on on the last day and skied with no problems and no assistance at all.

Anyway, a couple of years ago myself and my husband decided we were going to take the plunge and give it a try, particularly as he had always wanted to learn to ski too.
We booked an hours lesson at the local dry slope and were both hooked. We immediately booked our first trip (to Sauze D'Oulx in Jan 2008) and had an amazing time, so much so that we splashed out and bought our own skis and boots last summer. We spent another 12 months looking forward to our next trip, back to Sauze in January this year, this time for a fortnight and this proved what we already knew that skiing was something we both loved and wanted to do as much as possible. We looked into another trip this season, but decided that it wasn't possible due to lack of holidays and funds. Next year, we would love to do at least two trips but it depends on finances as I need to find a job to pay for my ski habit, which I'm in the process of looking for at the minute (if anyone would like to employ a research chemist with a ski addiction, please drop me a message!!) :D

I'd also like to convince my Mum to give skiing another go as I'm sure she would enjoy it if she gave it another try. She is worried that the rest of us would be better than her and she would be left on her own, which I've assured her wouldn't be the case, but so far I'm failing dismally. My step dad and brother would both love to go back, but won't go without her. If I win the lottery, I'll pay for then all to go, then she can't argue!!
How did every-one start skiing?

No-one in my family had ever skiied before me. When I was 17 I decided I wanted to go travelling and got as far as the Lake District. My mum suggested (to get the 'bug' out of my system) that I do a ski season, I first put on a pair of skis at the age of 18 in Tignes and spent my first season in Chamonix. And my second season was also in Chamonix. Many years later I did another 4 seasons. Finally got the bug out of my system 10 years ago and have been enjoying my annual ski trips ever since.

One week is just never long enough

I decided that a week of being drunk all day by myself was not going to be as much fun as I had anticipated, so I hired a board for a week, bought a full mountain pass for a week and started a 2 hour lesson. Gave up after 45 mins, went for a pint and worried about the 300 EUR "investment" i had just made. Had another pint and thought "**** it" and went and taught myself.

Re:How did every-one start skiing?

Like Ian W, I was off school with the flu when Franz K flew down the mountain at Innsbruck in 1976. I then badgered my parents to let me go on a school trip and away I went to Monte Bondone near Trento in Italy (in 1978 or 1979). It wasn't too long before I decided I would do a season, but had to wait until 1990 for that pleasure to come about and that one led to 5 in Meribel. I'm not sure the desire to spend season's has ever been extinguished, but currently happy enough with one or two weeks away seeing my little boy learning.

I'm with Tony on this one, and I think it's Rumpy Pumpy, not Rumpy Bumpy - it sounds better anyway when it rhymes.

And I'm not surprised Amanda got mixed up with the thread subjects - isn't this one supposed to be about how we all started ski-ing? It seems to have got a bit mixed up with the other one, happy mother's day, I think.

I'm totally exhausted after ski-ing as well. I think it's partly the altitude. I can hardly keep my eyes open after about 9 O'clock at night, and then I wake up at about 2 a.m. and it's ages before I manage to get back to sleep (and before anyone says anything, I'm definitely sleeping on my own when I'm on holiday).

Ally
