Cold Knees

Hi,

Just had my first week skiing in Les Vosges; great place.

Odd problem though ... First days were fine - sunny and not cold. Last day was sunny, but cold and windy. My knees got cold and almost painfully so. I noticed my knees were usually touching the material of my trousers - since they were usually bent and travelling against the cold air/wind. So, it was if the cold air was blowing directly against my knees, albeit through the material of my trousers. I was wearing proper ski trousers by the way.

Anybody had a similar problem? Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?

I can think of a couple of ways of fixing this:

1) Wear knee length socks (not a nice mental picture though).
2) Sew some padding into the inside of my trousers around the knee area.

I'd appreciate any advise.

Thaanks - Paul.
No, I don't wear thermals. Is that a normal thing to do? Would you only wear them on cold days?

Re:Cold Knees

I wear them 90% of the time, silk 3/4 length thermals. Seems like the logical place to start if your knees are getting cold to the point of painful.

That would be my suggestion.

Re:Cold Knees

I don't sweat loads so I generally wear them for a few days and still smell fresh. I would be lying if I hadn't said I had never worn them for a week on the trot, possibly more. I think I might have rotated between two pairs for a whole month..

Re:Cold Knees

My husband has a pair of silk thermals which he nearly always wears unless really hot ski day, then rinses them out each evening. They are usually dry the next morning, although my hair dryer may have to finish drying them off. I suppose we really ought to buy a second pair!

Re:Cold Knees

I use three different types of layers on my lower half.

1. silk or wool mix thermals
2. fitted micro-fleece pants
3. looser fitting fleece or micro fleece pants

I combine the layers as needed. On the colder days -20C or lower, it'll be all three.

I have several pairs of uninsulated ski pants. The construction of uninsulated pants varies. Some have micro-fleece in the butt and knee areas, which makes them warmer. Even the fit can can make a difference to warmth, tighter pants tending to be cooler.

The foam idea Caron mentioned came from a pair of Marmot pants which have internal pockets for an area of 10mm soft foam over the knees. These keep your knees warm on the lift even on the coldest days.

Trencher

Re:Cold Knees

I generally buy snowboard sallo's as opposed to ski sallo's, even though I do both. Boarding pants seem to have more padding especially around the behind area. Which is where I get really cold. In fact last year my cheeks stayed cold for ages after I had got the rest of myself warm back in the cabin. I think I will invest in some mens boxers for next years hols, just to get that extra warmth.

Re:Cold Knees

Just wondered if anyone could help with a question along similar lines - whenever I'm out in the cold (skiing, riding etc.) the tops of my thighs/backside are absolutely frozen (to the point of looking blue!), but the rest of my body is fine. I normally wear thermals and salos (which are a decent thickness) but even then, it doesn't do any good. I've even tried the more expensive thermals with marino wool, but to no avail.

Does anyone else have this problem and any ideas how to solve it? I thought about cycle shorts or maybe there are some even more ‘extreme' thermals on the market that I could try? :D

Thanks

This was my problem explained earlier in the thread. Backside/thighs did'nt feel cold while I was outside, but it was when I got back and took outside gear off, those parts felt freezing to the touch, and stayed like it for a good 45mins after. Thank heavens for a roaring log fire. But I have decided to buy blokes boxers to wear under my thermals for next year. I even asked if I could pinch some of hubbies, his reply yes okay but I draw the line at wearing yours.

Went to Lidl today, they are doing motorbike gear at the moment. Thoroughly recommend their thermals, tops and bottoms. Also their motorcycle gloves, very good for skiing in & if you do dry slope racing as well, as have protection so you don't rap yer knuckles on the poles.

A lot cheaper than the ski racing gloves you can buy.

I think I will invest in some mens boxers for next years hols, just to get that extra warmth.
