Hi,
I am Ally. I'm too shy to say much about the real world, plus I am escaping from it by coming here. And my ski-ing photo looks pathetic compared to everyone else's. But I don't mind admitting to being married, with two kids - one grown up and one currently doing GCSE's. And, I went to an all girls school, in London, so I am definitely female.

I learnt to ski on the dry slope at Alexandra Palace in London,in 1969, when I was 8. I thought I was a brilliant skier at the end of the course, because I could stop and turn (in a snowplough)and what more could I possibly need to do?

So, when we went on our family ski holiday to Sauze d'Ouze I was thoroughly bored with the lessons - I knew it all - and I bunked off and went tearing down the beginners slopes at a million miles an hour, and had a great holiday.

Then, when I was 11, I went ski-ing again with the school, to Austria, but I repeated the beginners classes so that I could ski with my best friend.

And I never skied again for 30 years, even though I really love it. I have had 3 holidays of ski lessons since (plus 2 without lessons) and now, unfortunately, I know I'm not a great skier. I would love to be 8 again, confident that I was the world's greatest skier, tearing down those nursery slopes. Now, I am all too aware that I forget to look down the slope, my parallel turns aren't perfect etc. etc. Somehow, however good I get, I don't think I'll get that innocent confidence back. But at least I can try.

Hi I have been reading your stuff all season and have taken the plunge. Loads of good info for all levels. (Not boasting) I ski 4/5 times a year and am going for a last blast on friday. rgds Eggman.

I am fortunate enough to have a season pass this year. we mainly ski St. Gervais/Megeve/Les Contamines,this year we have had days at Flaine/Praz Sur Arly/Les Houches. In the past we have skied in St Anton/Zermat/Sass Fee and a place in Italy that I can't remember(You get like this when you pass 39) :) Eggman

How did you find it? I think you were there the same week I was in Serre Che, which is only a matter of miles away. Did you do MontGenevre or manage to ski Sauze and Sestriere as well?
Claviere seems to be quite a good place to base yourself in terms of whats around locally.
The snow in Serre Che and MontG was excellent when we were there.

Have to say it was one of the best skiing holidays I've had - Claviere is ideal to base yourself in for the Milky Way, not the liveliest of resorts but met some good people and entertained ourselves. Saying that we didn't make it over to Sauze but we did have a couple of days in Montgenevre. The far side of the MW is too far to do on skis in a day, having a car would have been ideal for venturing further into the Italian MW. Most people we spoke to managed Sestiere but no further.

The snow was AMAZING, absolutely perfect every day, we had 2 days of snow and the rest of the week were blue sky days. I even treated myself to some new skis in resort and gave them a good road test and was skiing like Chemmy Alcot by the end of the week :D

Serre Che was superb. Weather-wise, exactly the same as you - I expect we were actually skiing under the same cloud that was dumping down on us on Wednesday!
I'd totally recommend the place to ski, but not the hotel! See my report on the France section.

When I was in Sauze, we used to ski to Sestriere and Sansciario, but took organised coach trips to MontG as its too far to ski and back in a day to be honest.

Summer is the time when everybody orders every single tour brochure and compares prices resorts etc etc, or is that just me? i'm guessing i had between 10-20 brochures last summer!

I was wondering that too.

Summer for me is.. hot +30 degree temps ..boating on Shuswap lake and waterskiing (least before I did my knee in..now I am the driver of the boat..not quite as fun) :lol:

ha ha ha It does get hot here,but its a dry heat that is really nice..you dont feel it as much... Love being by the water in that heat...gorgeous!!! 8)

I do miss skiing though in the summer...I will have to get as much in before mid April when it ends here :cry:

We're in that stage now. I know I have to clean up the dog run, but the snow has been covering 4 months worth of poop. So I'm not to keen for the snow to melt.

We get that hot too, except it's more like living in a hot damp sponge some days :cry:

I remember that too Trencher when I lived in Vancouver..thats uncomfortable. It is not like that here with the dry heat. You just use alot of bottles of sunprotector. )

Nope, will be first year of uni so not sure at the mo, am thinking potentially salzburger sportwelt in ski amade though!

I could'nt find a topic to introduce myself so I thought I would do it here as the title of the thread is "Newbies"
Hi, I am Gaz an English guy who lives and works in Romania, I have been skiing for about a year now and I would consider myself an advanced beginner (oxymoron if I ever heard one). I have a few ski resorts within a couple of hours of where I live but I mainly ski in Poiana Brosov or Paltinis. My wife (who is Romanian) has been skiing since she could walk and my ambition is to at least be able to Ski the same pistes as she does in the near future.
If anyone wants any info or recommendations about skiing in Romania please feel free to ask otherwise I will see you on the other boards.

lol i know everytime i looked at my avatar i was camouflaged against the tree so as i dont do close ups for obvious reasons, camera breaking etc thought what better than a slalom flying squirell, its nuts like me xx

I am from Peru not far from my best friend Pablo it is such a shame he move to Scotland the land of no snow, but he is nice boy,he loverly boy, he pretty boy, but don't let he fool you he no can ski,
he talk but can't talk the walk.
He always talk about skis but he no ski because there no snow in the land of the scot, they could no beat EEngladd at funny game rugby, I think england tanned the northern people bottom, I think
he should ave move to norwich where people are very nice and understand that we do not understd what scot people say.

Believe it or not I was home by 22.30 hrs I did have a couple of drinks and mixed beer with red wine which is not the way to go hence the heavy head but I was home before Mrs W went to bed,
I did have the chance to hit the bright lights of Norwich but I declined to be home with my family ( Match of the day was on the telly ) :oops: and as my boys gave those Northern fellas a good whipping I slept soundly :lol: :lol:

Hi, have just got back from St Gervais last week superb weather for 3 days, then two days of snow. I did what has been suggested on the site and went and hired some wider longer skis for the powder. I Liked the Rossignol S3 and will hopefully will get to buy some s/h if I can get the right length. Have finished for the season so the knee can rest:) Eggman.

Yes, our instructor in N most lunch times zipped backdown to the bottom to do an hours private tuition and came back to us think they charged GBP50 e an hour in Austria, but i suppose it varies in different resorts and countries.

When I was in Hopfgarten at Xmas our instructor also did private lessons at lunch and was the same price 50 euros :mrgreen:
