Help solving a holiday discussion

We have been planning hols for next winter because of only getting away once this winter, want to have more next winter.
My OH has said he gets a bit bored after 3-4 days in a resort. So what he would like to do is get flights probably Munich or Innsbruck, hire a car and travel around staying at several places over a 2 week period.
I say that this would not be possible I dont think there are many places to stay that would be willing to let you stay for 2-3 days at a time, only long weekends or weekly.
I would be agreeable to travelling around but I think we would have to book accomodation for a week, make it our base and travel to different resorts daily, then move further across Austria and do the same for the second week. Weekly lift passes would not be a problem as we usually buy day passes when we have decided whether we are boarding/skiing/xcountry/playing around. Any views?

Re:Help solving a holiday discussion

Rose,
I don't actually have experience of this but I reckon it's possible.
You don't mention France but there is a chain called Logis
Some of their hotels are in resorts, some not. They have hotels all over France and you can book through their website. You can also book direct with the hotels. There may be similar arrangements in Austria & Germany. I'm sure someone will be able to advise you better though.
If you have a car and travelling you could stay further from the resort centre as well, where they may be glad of bookings, especially in low season.

It's a great idea. Good luck!

Re:Help solving a holiday discussion

Rose

Ever thought about a US trip. You can fly to Salt Lake City from Londo for about 200 pounds pp next Xmas for two weeks. Hotels, restaurants and car hire are cheap. There must be a dozen ski resorts you could drive to in about an hour each way. Discount lift tickets are about $55 a day (in town). I would hope the Pound/Dollar rate might have improved by then as well.

Edit: Recently my plane landed in Salt Lake City at 10.15 and I was putting my boots on at the Canyons at 11.15. The lift ticket was free, because I had my flight boarding pass from that morning.

Trencher

Trencher beat me to it. Or even Canadian Rockies? Or some of the I70 resorts in Colorado?

Bit of a change from your standard euro holiday.

Pablo and Trencher thanks for info, thats really what Hubby would like but I am not keen on long haul. May have overcome the flying thing a bit but not that far. Plus December is always a no-no for me, busiest month of the year at work and holidays are banned

Re:Help solving a holiday discussion

Rose our household went through a phase of skiing road trips. We would book one stay, then make up the rest and follow the snow. Just pick a resort and call in at the Tourist Office on arrival and see what was available. Have stayed in private houses that have Zimmer Frei signs, at very low prices.
You could make up your own package by booking a flight and car, plus your 1st few days, and then use the web to book rooms ahead. We always prefer "low" season skiing, hate crowds.

Who says go in December? I would recommend most months apart from December

Book yourself some nice(read: business) BA seats and take the haul, you will thank Trencher and myself later.

You could even half the flight time and stop in NY/Boston for a city break on the way there/back.

There are the resorts of the Canadian Rockies too.

None of the hotels will have issues with you booking only a few days.

Help solving a holiday discussion

Rose i don't reckon you'd have a problem with booking in for a few nights in europe particularly in out of seasons dates like january or march. I'd be tempted with salzburg then move around the 5 areas of the ski amade (all covered on one lift pass) plus hitting zell am see/kaprun saalbach/ hinterglemm. That should be enough for 2 weeks i would have thought!

Re:Help solving a holiday discussion

Trencher has the solution.
I was in Utah (in Salt Lake city) for two weeks and skied everyday in sun, -5c weather and had powder to knees everyday since it snowed EVERY night!

Never got bored! Never skied same resort! Always had powder!

Heaven!

I will pay your trip if your husband even thinks of boredom!

That is called "putting your money on the line"!!!

Now with economic "problems" there are many many deals in Utah!

Respectfully,
Pavel

Thanks for all suggestions, it certainly makes sense as we are making it a different type of holiday to go further afield and to America. Will certainly investigate.

Help solving a holiday discussion

Rose now you seem to be warming to the America idea it's obviously been made clear to you your two main options, Utah and Salt Lake City or I70 resorts of colorado. My preference would be the Utah but if you were to do Colorado, which is a shorter flight i think then i would go to Winter Park, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail and Beaver Creek. Those are the closest resorts to denver before heading of for hours towards Aspen snowmass etc. Maybe in colorado basing your self in Frisco would be a good bet, close proximity to breckenridge keystone and vail! Wherever you go it'll be great!!

Exactly. I reckon a lot of resorts are closer than people think. We're in Neiderau next week but are planning a single night in a Hotel in Leogang so we can ski Zell am See and Saalbach over two of the days. Getting a single night in a Hotel was no problem at all.

Re:Help solving a holiday discussion

I have found with many resorts that their local or regional tourist authority website have accommodation that can be booked for any number of ights: often B&B or pensions, but thats perfect for what Rose is looking for.

The Inn Valley in Austria is very easy to travel around in, and at one end you have got access to the Skiwelt and Wildschonau, going down to the Ziller Valley, and on to the likes of St Anton and Ischgl at the other end. You could drive about and stopover in different places, or base yourself in the middle and do day trips.

I quite like the idea of it myself!

Rose

Tony is spot on. I've just come back from a short trip to Soll. Flew scheduled to Munich, hired a car and zipped down to Soll. Its only about 90 minutes down the motorway. While the hotels were reluctant to take the booking initially, we had no problem getting a booking once it got closer to the travel dates. We had 3 and a half days skiing for 3 nights away and it was brilliant. Lots of new snow and practically nobody about - average queues times about 10 seconds

You should have no problem moving around the many resorts provided you are reasonably flexible in terms of type of accommodation (rarely an issue in Austria as most accommodation is pretty reasonable quality) and travel outside peak times.

Re:Help solving a holiday discussion

Well we decided that we would like to do America, but unfortunately my work place does not agree. I already have a return trip to Ruka booked and which no way are we going to cancel. But I cant have another two weeks off in either Jan,Feb or March, but I can have another week either side of my planned holiday. So...........have kept original booking to Ruka but have hired a car so we can do Roveniemi,Kussamo,Oulu, then booked a second week in Levi so we can then do Yllas, Pyha,Iso-soyote and then may-be Saariselka and hopefully a trip to Sweden.
So hopefully it will all work out and then I think we can say we've done Finland and will put America into plan for 2011.
