Deep powder!

Tried to ski on it a couple of times and couldn't do it, sank, fell over and clumsily made my way back to the piste. :roll:

Can anyone give me some advice?

For starters, you don't ski on powder, you ski in it!!! :wink: :lol:

You may want to see the thread on powder technique. Keep practicing, and one day it'll hopefully just click!

How deep are we talking? Nipple deep?

Seriously though.. stay centred over your skis, I am not a fan of "DO NOT"s but DO NOT 'lean back'. What makes the powder learning curve easier is powder skis. I remember well the day it clicked for me in Banff a few years ago.. just ski it like normal snow! Instead of gliding over the top you are in it (as above).

I know the feeling, been there lots, even had the lessons :D There is a thread running, which is a good place to start..

Other than that, for me, it all started to work, when I put my feet together, spread the weight evenly and pointed my skis down the hill on setting off. Turns for me are more 2 footed, than carved, and my 1st (most important turn) I extend up "2 footed".
Getting my head around going faster than I really want to, I'm still working on :mrgreen:

I know most people on here are skiers, but whats the technique for boarding in powder. We dont go off piste as such but go off walking somewhere with boards strapped to backs and we invariably find somewhere to have a bit of a laugh. Usually quite deep snow, down series of hills but it just does not work we usually just end up sinking. Once hubby sank so deep still attached had to sort of dig out around him so he could get out. I was no help just laughing so much I was useless.

Think of powder as water. Like a surfer on a wave, wave breaks down - end of ride. On a board, you really have to spot your line and if there is a flat spot, be sure you will have the speed to carry you over it. The one thing you can do easily on a snowboard is to move your bindings back on powder days. This allows you more control, as your body can remain in a nuetral/well balanced stance.

Thanks Trencher, probably due to lack of speed as the hills were low not enough time to build up speed when you hit the deep powder at the bottom.

I know it's the Holy Grail 'n' all, but I'm with the ones who haven't quite cracked it yet.. fell like I need a snorkel whenever I venture into powder...

Don't sit back? Stay awake and concentrate is better advice. last powder i skied, followed Mrs P into some virgin snow. She never goes off piste, so I not really concentrating. Just a bit between 2 pistes not much off the beaten track. Fresh everywhere, they only openned the lifts at 1pm whilst they bombed the avalanches and we'd been skiing fresh fluff on piste all afternoon. This was late in the day, in the sun, lower down. Just as i got into it, a few random thoughts floated across my supremely happy mellow brain. Like: nice day/great to be alive/wonder what the avalanche risk is here/where is mrs P/ mustn't sit back. Then WHACK! dug tips in just a fraction, skis stopped dead and i went head first over the handlebars landing head first. Came up looking like a yeti, Mrs p nearly died laughing and i am seriously considering buying a skid lid! there are worse things you could do than sit back - like not concentrate!

Trays? Purleeease! If I wanted tea daaaling, i'd go to the Ritz. Anyway, like skateboarding, fad sport, it'll never catch on. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a completely old f**t. I do have a skateboard - use it whenever I move house to help shift stuff like washing machine, piano etc.

when I watch clips like this I notice that skiers seem to bounce. I obviously can't see their knees :shock:, is it the powder or the knees?

A bit of both really, pressure of snow builds up under the skis and they break the surface (ish), the knees absorb this and it helps the turn, which in itself is usually a very relaxed affair in deeper snow*

Hi Brucie!

You know I have not skied Panorama,my brother seems to really like it though. BC is going to get snow Saturday and Sunday,so that should help with conditions.
You should come up to Sunpeaks next time! It is gorgeous! Nice place to stay also.That is my local mountain.

The other weekend I was skiing with my boarder buddies...getting off the chair..while sitting in between them ...the lift guy called it a ski sandwich ha ha ha ..scary !!!ha ha ha thought they were going to both take me out when getting off the lift! you boarders! :D
