where to go next year......open to anything

ok so as you may or may not know I went to the famous Niederau and was a tad underwhelmed! but anyway thats another story and from this trip i have decided what we want as a family.

So I am looking at next years 2010 ski trip (but dont tell hubby coz he thinks we are going somewhere hot! lol)

So here are my requirements:

Family of 4 (kids aged 9&11), looking for large ski resort with nice cruisy blues or tame reds, somewhere that links to lots of lifts (I have been to skiwelt before and somewhere like this would be ideal), we do not need apres ski in fact we only left the apartment once during this ski trip and that was to go toboganing!, not bothered what country but dont really want to have a long commute from airport to resort, we will be taking the kids out of school so not stuck to school holidays, would like to go somewhere where it is not mega expensive. (wouldnt we all? lol).

I was thinking about maybe the first week in March. Is this a good time? or maybe first week in February? not bothered as long as the resort has good snow resort and is high enough. Is it worth me prebooking it this year for 2010 or should we wait till last minute?

Any info will be greatly recieved and processed.
Karen

Karen, why dont you have a look at Seefeld/Austria. From what you said about N and what you want from a holiday that ticks all the boxs. Theres plenty to do for the kids, 3 ski areas all within walking distance and 20mins transfer from Innsbruck.

From experience, Sauze d'Oulx has the sort of runs you crave. Good ski area linked into others, good lifts.

You should consider Cervinia too.

I am told Les Arcs may be perfect also.

I am off to Serre Che sunday so will let you know what its like there.
where to go next year......open to anything

Hi Karen
I have apartments in Leogang , part of the large Ski Circus with Saalbach and Hinterglemm. Leogang is an ideal family resort and from 14th march ( maybe slightly different next year ) kids get a free ski pass which can be a big saving. There is evening skiing, toboggoning and a weekly show on snow, but no clubs so the resort is a true family resort. We have a sauna, hot tub and Sky TV, plus loads of board games, a childrens play room table tennis table football and pool. So actually you dont need to be lloking for anything to do. If you need any more info please get in touch

Hi Pablo and Tony
I appreciate that waiting is a good idea if you are young single and can just watch for the right conditions and price etc, but not when you are a family with kids , there are more issues to take into consideration .

True, although it depends on whether you are prepared to take your kids out of school, which I guess depends on their age.

Yes but to take the kids out with permission takes some time to organise anyway, you cant just not turn up at school, there are lots of forms to fill in and get approval, so last minute can be a bit of a problem still.

Re:where to go next year......open to anything

The out of school time ski holiday I consider as part of little W education, I have stated many times on this site that I would not take her at half term it is too busy and secondly the prices are far too expensive.

I am not saying decide the day before you go 'when' you are going. Book a week off and then book a holiday for that week closer to the time.

Ive the same problem. We have 3 kids and they will be all classed as adults,14yrs and over and we would love HB or catered Chalet. Were looking at Jan 2nd so they will only miss 3 days of school and Im sure not to much is done in the 3 days anyway. We also have exams to think of.

Ive set a date and am going to see what prices are like for early deals then make my mind up then. My heart says wait nearer to Chrimbo but my heed says book now. Not got alot of cash tbh so I may have to wait anyway.

Got GBP3000 what would you do?

Re:where to go next year......open to anything

Hi MFC

3000 pounds is a lot of money !!
Our apartments with 2 bedrooms would cost you around 125 Euro per night x 7 an estate car for 8 days pick up airport is euro 255 so far 1130 Euro
This year flights straight after the new year were peanuts, I cant say that it will be the same, but based on the last 6 years of business in Austria , it is more probable than not that you will find cheap flights. This year my sons paid about 60 pounds return .
Last night I went out to dinner in a 4 star hotel, the buffet was Euro 13.50 per person. Next door to our apartments you can get a 3 course daily special menu for between 12 and 14 Euro , if you calculated 100 Euro per night with a drink etc that is very realistic. So if you managed flights for pounds 750 for 5 of you, plus meals out every night plus a car rental and accommodation you are still having about 500 pounds spare towards the lift passes.Obviously if you want to save money you can mix eating in with going out, travel to and from the airport on the train 28 euro each way for 5 of you. It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want to make it. After New year I am happy to take a booking that is not arriving on a Saturday, which is usually the most expensive day to travel.
This Christmas 3 of our guest families drove from the UK, This week ( half term ) one family flew to Stuttgart, OK 4 hour drive but they paid 29 pounds each for the flight, so it made a half term holiday affordable. There are many ways and means to do it cheaper than a tour op package. If you need help or info please get in touch. Just one point to mention March in our village the kids would get free lift passes. Best of luck.
