Hi,
I am a newbie, but I can't think of anything particularly interesting to say right now except that I really like ski-ing, but I have just had my holiday, and I'm trying to work out how to survive without ski-ing until next February.

Do they sell ski patches anywhere? (sort of like nicotine patches, for ski addicts). Or is this board a ski patch perhaps?

So, I am feeling very sad.

Hi I am a newbie too, Oh and me are both 62 and have been skiing for 3yrs now and we are are ski addicts too! We had two weeks in jan but would love to be able to go again this season

Hi everyone,
I was ski-ing with someone last week, for 4 days, in group lessons, sitting together on chair lifts etc. and I was convinced she was a girl - but even the ski instructor wasn't sure, and in the end he had to ask her brothers, and it turned out she was a he!

How embarassing :oops:

It's very difficult to tell when people are wearing a load of ski clothes, and in this case the boy's voice can't have broken yet.

And it's just as difficult when people are using avatars and nick-names etc. on-line. Just to be clear - I am female.

I know i am a bit late, but i am a newbie too :-)

I am 37 years old and have been skiing since i was 14, but still need to learn a lot ;-) I am also a diving instructor living in the Canary Islands (hence the ski&dive). This makes skiing holidays perfect, because Feb to April is our quietest time, so skiing fits in perfect as a break away and a chance to take up my second biggest passion(skiing)!!

I am new to the ski forum stuff, but have been in scuba diving forums and they are not a nice place !! So I am hoping for a friendly forum banter :-)

I have been to Norway already this year and I am counting down the "2 sleeps" till i am in Andorra :-)

It would be nice to get to know you all :-)

P.S just to clarify Ski&dive= Male :-)

Hi Ski and Dive (male).

Where do you usually ski? When I was a child I skied at Sauze d'Ouix and Saalbach, and since I've been an adult I nearly skied in Borovets, Bulgaria, but I broke my shoulder 2 weeks before the holiday and 2 days before Christmas practising in a lesson on a dry ski slope, because I hadn't skied for 30 years.

And then I did actually ski at Zell am See, which we all liked very much, Obergurgl, Val Thorens (twice), and La Rosiere.

We are thinking about going to Courchevel (1550) next February half-term and staying in a cheap self-catering apartment.

But I am not a very good skier. I still snow-plough when I'm nervous and I'm rubbish in moguls (I end up sitting on them).

Hi AllyG,

I have skied all over, but really like Norway !! I have been to Evitfvel (Norway) a few times, it is great skiing and always has lots of snow :-) Norway can be a little costly though !!

It sounds like you have done quit a bit of skiing ??

Dry ski slopes are the work of the DEVIL !! I learnt to ski on them, then when i went on real snow, i thought how much easier it was :-)

Have you ever tried sand surfing ?? that is really hard on the legs !! all the walking back up the sand dunes !!

Hi Ski&Dive,
I've got to go out now, but no I haven't tried sand ski-ing - it sounds like fun.

My elder daughter went to Geilo in Norway for her first ski holiday, and she said it was great, and the instructors were fantastic. So I can see why you like it there.

Hiya, after being an interested observer of the site for some time, I thought it was time to register and make my first post-especially after Eljay's invite!
Name is just Ricky (not Rickytoo!),from "over the pond" in N. Ireland, been hooked on skiing for a lot of years (probably too many!), and have skied a lot in Austria, France, Bulgaria as well as trips to Andorra, Canada and Bonnie Scotland. Still get as excited before my trips as I ever did, and I'm in the fortunate position to get more than one trip a year at present. Always trying to improve and can ski all piste stuff pretty well but am hoping to learn off-piste next as my ultimate ambition is heli or cat skiing!
Other interests include rugby, motorbikes and off course, apre-ski!
My next trip is Saturday week and am already counting down!
Great forum, some great craic!
By the way Eljay-your'e a nut :D

Sounds like I'm at the same level as you, had an off piste lesson in Whistler last year...kept sinking and falling over :shock: I will persevere though not sure about the heli ski thing though just yet! :shock:

I'm curious how old all of you are. . . I am thinking I may be one of the youngest here at 27? Of course, I am one of the few representatives from the US. :) I feel so blessed to live 7 minutes away from my little 935 vertical feet of snow. :P

I am 47 and I live in Wales. It takes us a day and a half to get to the slopes in France, by train, because we live 250 miles from London. We go by train rather than fly because we are trying to help control global warming.

I think you misunderstood me, apologies.
Amanda posted "Hi n bye Eljay" to which I responded, talking about Amanda, "I bet thats what she says to all the men" having deleted the Eljay reference. It was then that someone mentioned you were a she, which I pointed out was irrelevant as I was not talking about you, but about the phrase Amanda probably uses for all the men.

Same here AllyG we live in Wales also, only we go to Dover (approx 4-5hrs) to drive over to France these days, too much hassle carting skis etc about :D

We are only two in a saloon car, the cases / tool box etc go in the boot, ski bags on the back seats, with spare room for goods bought on the way home, I have the packing of the car down to a fine art now :) Our car does around 48 mpg
We have also done the trip 2x couples but we used their estate car and shared the cost

Nissan X-Trail mostly these days. I have driven out alone, but mostly travel as a couple :D

Always carried skis, always inside the car. BTW you can get a pair of 190's 2 peeps and luggage in a Metro :D

My OH used to get her Double Bass in a Mini Metro!!!!!!!!!

Says it was easier than our current station wagon!!!!

Hi - I'm fairly new to the forum though spend far too long most days looking at J2ski - mostly at snow reports till recently but last week we got back from our 2nd and last ski trip of 2009 so have to wait unitl 2010 till the snow reports relate to us. I live in Milton Keynes but the Snowdome just doesn't compare to a mountain!

I have been on 5 ski trips in total - all in France. Now I'm spending time researching where to go in Italy - not sure on the Milky Way or the Dolomites - but gives me something to do for the next 11 months.

Maybe somebody should try and organise a car sharing scheme for future holidays? It sounds as though several people here drive to France.

As far as global warming goes, I think 4 people in a car is the same as the train, and someone else here did some costings on a car (I've forgotten who it was I'm afraid) and as far as I remember it worked out at about GBP100 per person as long as you have 4 people, which is cheaper than the train.

A lot of the French resorts seem to be quite close together, so they wouldn't even have to go to the same resort.

Even if we wanted to fly, we live about 100 miles from Cardiff airport, the nearest one, and Cardiff doesn't fly everywhere and the places it does go to cost more than flying from Bristol, which is further again.

We usually spend nearly 5 hours on a train getting to London, spend the night with my elderly parents, and then have an 8 hour train journey (usually broken by changing stations in Paris) followed by a one hour bus transfer to resort, and then drag our suitcases through the snow to our self-catering apartment.

So, naturally we don't bring skis or boots with us.

We are thinking about going to Courchevel 1550 next year, and limiting ourselves to window shopping, apart from buying milk, pasta, toilet paper and other essentials, as we have heard everything is very expensive there.
