Help...does anyone know how to get from Geneva to Val Cenis cheaply

Plaese can anyone help me!
We are arriving in Geneva on Fris 3rd April evening. We need to somehow travel to Val Cenis, but I am having a lot of trouble trying to work the journey out on a budget.
Anyone have any good ideas!

Depending on your arrival hour in Geneva, you can take a train from the airport, change at Geneva and Chambery and arrive at Modane which I think is the nearest station, about 25km to the resort. Cost is 45 Euros single. Travel time to Modane is about 4 and a half hours.

Quite a confusing website, as not very good at French! I think it is going to cost more than expected.
Don't know if it would be better to hire a car. Do you know what the journey would be like?

Sorry, not a resort that I have visited. Car Hire out of Geneva has gone up a bit in price this year IMHO, seems abot GBP200 per week now. Also, depending on your time of arrival you may not be able to get public transport, and may have to overnight in a hotel.

Another option is to use Altibus http://www.altibus.com/index.aspx

Val Cenis resort think they are served by this company, though it may not run direct from Geneva.

I used altibus for Chambery--> Bourg and they were pretty good.

Ah, that explains it. French side is cheaper, harder to navigate to/from and you pay extra for extras like winter tyres.

The Auto-Europe prices are in line with all the agencies it would seem, as they are offering a Kia Picanto for GBP207 (Swiss side) for the dates we need. Special Offer apparently.

I thought you had found a source of cheap rental cars! Difference between the two sides of the same airport looks to be about GBP50.

No good us renting on the French side as we need a Vignette :mrgreen:

Fiat Panda price from Geneva French side is GBP140.95. This does not cover refundable excess or winter tyres.

You will need to check, but since you are going in April, you probably are not required to use winter tyres.

You can choose to pay extra for excess insurance or take out annual excess insurance.

To reduce the GBP140.95 down to GBP129.67, route to Auto Europe through Quidco. A week ago, the reduction was 8%.

If you have 3000 or so Airmiles, you should get the car hire for nothing!

When you say hire from the french side, is this possible I thought geneva was in Switzerland. Do they drop off car at airport.Sorry am I being really thick here?

Geneva Airport is both in France and in Switzerland as the border runs through it. If you return a rented car to the "wrong" side, the hire car co. will charge you for returning it. The airport has Swiss and French sectors, so it's best to check where your flight is landing.

Both sides of the airport have car rental companies. The French side is in the EU of course, but both Switzerland and France are Schengen participants, unlike the UK, so passport control may take longer for UK citizens.

There is access to the French Sector before Passport Control. This link should help you with planning your trip. The Menu on the left hand side has options for the French Sector.

Still trying to sort things out. it is def cheaper on French side. need to find out where our flight lands, but it seems that it doesn't really matter as we can pass over to the french side. Still sorting!!!

You can if you don't rush book your flights and end up going to Geneva. It's very easy if you fly to Turin, Chambery or Grenoble. It's also very easy by coach, train or self drive.

It's the Alps not Timbuktu!!!
